Quite happy to have drawn your attention to the Forteller Cambrian and seeing how much you like it. I'm selling my rarely worn fully lumed white model as I am moving on from my dive watches phase to a more dressy style in my collection. It comes with all the original stuff. So, if anyone is interested, hit me up. Mine is no. 141/149, so it's one of the last ones made. And unlike these "5000pcs limited edition" Seikos this one truly is limited and they are not in production any longer. I have searched for them being available online and didn't find anything.
I love my Houtman Pilbara. It's great for Jason Houtman that the Pilbara rated so highly. I also think that the finishing on this watch is excellent. You can clearly see your reflection in the polished chamfers and the brushing is very good too. Jason is a very nice fellow. I can't speak highly enough about his customer service too.
Thanks for the video Gary. I just ordered an Aragon Divemaster 4 Evo full lume watch. It cost me $139, there were other colours available for $119. They represent great value for money however I think the size and weight could put a lot of people off.
I got my Forteller Cambrian on Tuesday and I'm very impressed with it. Pictures / video don't really show the true colour of the blue dial. It's more of a teal colour and really is beautiful. Lume is great too. Really looking forward to seeing what they come up with next.
Zelos definitely belongs in this mix as it is as “unoffensive” 😂😂😂 as any presented here but seriously another great job as usual Gary. You cover this segment as well as anybody. Regards from California!
I agree so much with Forteller being near perfect and insane value. My full lume dial quickly became one of my favourites. I was so pleased to see that the hands were a dark gunmetal colour which worked so well with the white dial. I agree that it would have been better at 200m if it was thinner. One of the few watches I own where I've strongly considered buying a second.
I am a huge fan of Long Island Watch Co.'s Islander brand. I have an ISL-116 Southold that I bought last year. NH35, 42mm diameter, 165 grams on the bracelet... though it doesn't feel like it on wrist. They currently have the Southold in green, the ISL-117 for $299. BUT... their dive watch line is very tempting. I'm not sure that this next one can be called a microbrand due to the impressive array of models they offer, but I also recently purchased an Aragon Divemaster II in 42mm. With silicone strap and NH36 it was $129 with an applied discount. I have a 7 1/4 inch wrist and it's a joy to wear.
1💛💛% I'm proud but also a bit self aware of it being kinda odd/overly fixated to say that I own (and love wearing) three -LIW- (edit: Islander) 38mm's (emerald, Pan Am, and Pepsi) and three Bayports (black, grey, and emerald). And a Spinnaker x LIW Croft collab. Next up is that champagne dial DayT 👀. Great product at a very fair price along with Marc's contagious enthusiasm and LIW's outstanding customer service. I'm a a customer for life.
I know you said Zelos. I love the Swordfish 40mm Ti Salmon. Spec monster and extremely comfortable on wrist. They still have the green dial version in stock.
Ivw got the Foreteller Cambrian in blue....what a watch...I love it. I originally joined the unsuccessful Kickstarter campaign. I'm so pleased with the watch. The value is phenomenal. The whole package is exceptional. I wish they'd made the green version they were planning.
Great video! The Forteller is number one and it's well-deserved. The value of money is incredible. Quality is just exceptional. Only the clasp on the metal bracelet is little bit down-grading but you can still mount one of the two straps they sent with the watch !!! So content of the package has incredible value too!! Warranty 18 months (unusual but still more than a year warranty ;o)) Just waiting forward to their next watch !!!
Zelos Swordfish at about $300 and Helm Vanuatu are 2 of the best divers out there! Zelos makes several under 40 mm watches. Also the Zelos Blacktip for those wanting a 40mm with Miyota 9 series. Lots of others but I have those, I mentioned except for the Blacktip.
The Wise Hitman is an impressive watch! They offer quite a few options, each available with either white or black date wheel and I believe all of them come with regulated movements.
I'll see your top 5 and raise you: 1) Scurfa Diver One 2) Geckota Seahunter 3) Nite Alpha (tritium) 4) Panzera Aquamarine Pro 5) Zelos Swordfish 40mm And the CW Trident Pro 300 which is a wee bit dearer and I'm not even sure CW are a micro any more 🙂. Take care.
@@ilikewatches Test 5 is still alive so I'll give it another go. Geckota's proper rotating bezel 200m divers are on their site in the Sea Hunter Collection. I've got two of em.
I only have a couple of microbrands in the collection and those are the Traska Freediver and Tuseno Shellback and they compete very well for ‘wrist time’ with the higher end watches that I have. NTH is a good brand too and the Nodus Avalon is worthy of mention.
Good list, but if value carries more weight, I'd recommend Aragon (STP Swiss Movement) and Glycine (Sw200 Swiss Movement). Both of those are available with "the specs" at under $350.
Having owned both the wise and the forteller I'd recommend the wise. The extra money is justified with the superior finishing, bracelet and clasp but they are both great watches and unbelievable value for money.
Seiko got to expensive with their modest specifications. The moment you can have seiko movement and a sapphire crystal for 150 usd, Seiko is not needed anymore.
Let me put this out there.... Henry Archer Nordso 200M Diver, Miyota 9039.... wait for it.... 10.5mm thick. I literally would not look at another Microbrand Dive watch having received mine with the meteorite dial and knowing that it is actually thinner than my Hamilton Khaki King field watch. Question is, what are these other brands playing at making their watches so thick when Henry Archer have proved that this is not necessary....
While it's more expensive than these affordable alternatives, it wears like a Swiss watch many times the price. Mine is currently running at +1 second a day which is better than most of the Swiss movements in my collection.
I like dive watches thicker and clunky. As for me that's part of the dive design. My dress watches are all under 10 mm thick because, well they are dress watches.
I have the Forteller with blue dial and I agree that it is an absolutely fantastic watch (and yes, it is on the taller side and the clasp could be better, but I am nitpicking here).
Good to see RLG getting some attention - I can't understand why this watch is still available! I have this very model and love it. The dial in particular is just fabulous. The lume is outrageously good too... except in the bezel but hey, you can't have everything.
Very compelling list. Since you asked for other contenders for the best, I'll suggest the Proxima PX1697. I've had the white dial for the past month and it's really something. The beautifully sculpted case is what sets it apart, along with a beautiful double dome sapphire crystal. Add a fantastic white enamel dial, very well executed oyster bracelet, excellent lume and a well regulated PT5000 movement at $260 when NOT on sale.
The Odyssea is really nice. Just wish the light blue one was still in stock. Love the 39mm case size! And I have to mention the Zelos swordfish. I have the titanium with the "satin" (brushed titanium) dial. It's a fantastic watch.
I totally agree on the Zelos 40mm Swordfish Ti. For the money and specs! Has a Seiko Nh35 with a sandwich dial that’s a lume monster that’s ultra light weight. I’m a general contractor and wear it everyday because I forget it’s on my wrist. Yeah it gets scratches but they somehow fad away with wearing it. I actually just bought the Green one because it’s a steal for a Titanium Watch.
Also bought the Zelos Blacktip GMT 41mm and another stunning watch for a skin diver! Well balanced and the articulation on the bracelet is comfortable on the wrist. The dials they put out are wild and different. This company truly listens to their customers.
Great selection. The Cambrian reminds me a thicker, more modern and more "diver" version an AliX all-star, the Proxima PX1697. Key difference, and why I really like wearing that Proxima, it that it is a very thin watch with a hi-beat movement. The thin depth and thin retro bezel, along with the paper/slightly cream white dial with athe same 6 o'clock date (for symmetry 💛) really won me over. So nice I'm considering buying twice (one for NATOs, keep one on brac.? - too weird🤷🏼) BTW 6 o'clock date/no day looks SO much more classy than at 3 o'clock IMHO.
I have the black dial forteller and I have quite a bit of complaints on it at least on mines. The watch is so thick for it's dimension, I have a tudor gmt, it's thick but better proportioned, the lume on mine is unevenly applied, the accuracy of my NH35 is -25 to -35 secs a day. But that's probably just my luck
Surprised Aquatico didn't make the list. I don't know why Phoibos don't sell the Kranken anymore, would have liked to get one. Plus, they discontinued the Eagle Ray in orange too. The best-looking wise hitman was the stainless steel bezel with grey dial HIT-S1, but it was limited and sold out. They should make more stainless steel bezel versions of the Hitman.
A serious contender would the Clemence 'Photic' in any of the colour variations -- they're a British company operating out of Edinburgh and do exquisite work, headed up by Tom Clemence who used his time during the lockdowns to design and build a piece that's an utter joy to own and wear daily.
Great list and video! In addition to these awesome watches I'd inclue the Dryden Pathfinder, Dufrane Travis and Long Ilsand Watches Port Jefferson Skindiver. Vanbanner makes an awesome 200m diver, Parking Master 2.0 but all our sold out, but he has mentioned a 3.0 is in the works. Also Signum makes an excellent diver, supreme lume on their titanium full lume divers. Just my opinion but I really like the looks of the HELM Vanuatu but not the 3-4yr wait. San Martin does a close homage that is really good for the money. SN012-G, which you reviewed on your channel, I believe. I'd take the Miyota 8315 over the NH35, but that's, again, my opinion.
Thanks for pointing out the Forteller Brand. Looks like they're sold out across all color ways, but looking forward to seeing what they come up with next.
Hi, today I received 3 pack from Forteller. I will only keep blue dial and black and white dial will be sold. If you interested of buying one, let me know. Forteller Cambrian watch won’t be for sale anymore on them website. Both watches I have for sale are black dial is no 0 of 99 and the white dial also no 0 from 149.
Hi Gary, do,like the Houtman and the Hitman, but, on the dressy side, I would go for the Wise Adamaskus AD8 red dial. Only fail, appart of being more expensive, is the lack of a bracelet. Regards
Walking through alley express, I'm Leary of hyped up complications with ultra low prices. Before you judge, I'm VERY mechanically inclined and only so much can go into a product at cost. I understand that cheap labor is used to produce these watches. If they're a $150 and close to $500 watch........ Sounds to good to be true. I buy shoes for more to help my feet and they're cut by machine and assembled. Watches are not the same as for machine production. And I get watch parts are CNC made BUT take a lot of manpower to program and those machines ARE NOT CHEAP. So with that lots of great looking stuff but I need not to bite than looks. You could buy a cavalier or you could buy Camaro what's going to die first. JMO. 👍
How about the Namica Neo Tokyo? Amazing Lume and novel colour choices. (I do agree with the Cambrian being the value choice though. Definately a Norwegian labour of love.)

Thank you - the greatest problem of the Microbrands are the "Sold out". Please show watches only, if 70% are in depot. The nicest watch is nothing, if you are not able to buy it and your video is at least "for free".

LOVE that black dial with burgundy bezel
Geckota, build and movement with style,,quality piece.
It has been one of the hardest things over the past few years to not pull the trigger on that Forteller watch. It's absolutely stunning.
I have one and I have to say it's ok, the watch. It's a little too thick and the accuracy is abysmal, also the lume is unevenly applied.
@@MarkDanger777 thanks for this. I'm really trying to limit myself in how many watches I buy, so helpful to know
Love these "alternative" microbrands. Really opened my eyes about what is out there outside of the usual suspects like Seiko etc. Thanks for this!
Good to see RLG getting some attention - I can't understand why this watch is still available! I have this very model and love it. The dial in particular is just fabulous. The lume is outrageously good too... except in the bezel but hey, you can't have everything.
I alternate wearing my Seiko King Turtle and my Steinhart OVM. For similar money as the Turtle the Steinhart is a great microbrand watch.
You missed the J&G Exciton II on this list! I've never heard of Fortellers before but I'm sure to have a look at them now. Great video, thanks!
That WISE is very NISE 😊
Very compelling list. Since you asked for other contenders for the best, I'll suggest the Proxima PX1697. I've had the white dial for the past month and it's really something. I didn't like the blue antireflective coating
I tried to get a Forteller around Christmas but out of stock and no idea when any more coming. Hard to find a reason not to buy. Seems like a lot of others saw the reviews and had the same idea as me.
This is a great topic for a video.
How do these 5 brands compare to San Martin regarding the finishing and materials used?
Enjoyed this - thanks
Great review, how about Scurfa and NITE Watches for a review at some point, they both look great watches, would love a in depth review by you on them 👍Garry
The forteller isn't available for sale ?
I posted this video quite a while ago
What about the two that James produced with you? They're top tier material for this list as well.
any opinions on the MMI Cuttlechron?
Great review... some beautys there... Maybe worth a review Gary another microbrand from cheshire CESTRIAN there dive watch for the money seem to have great specs..
Thanks, reviewed it....I'm now waiting for them to release more watches!
@@ilikewatches aaah must a missed that one great spec for the money by looks of it will have a watch of the review
I do like the look and build quality of unimatic but I've cracked open the one i bought from them and my goodness was it dirty!!!
What are your thoughts on Aragon watches
I have a forteller cambrian and I don't wear it anymore because it's thick for it's proportions, the lume is unevenly applied, and that watch made me hate the NH35 movement, my watch averages -30 seconds a day.
Gary. Have you ever tried an RZE titanium watch? They look interesting.
Great watch Company too!
really good video
I wonder how many of these brands will be around in 5 years?
How about quartz options?
Somehow, Phoibos also comes at first in my mind.
However, the octopus symbol can be too much to certain people. Me included.
What about Gavox Longitude ? Much better than these models …you must try it and review to understand Why 😉
You clearly work for them…of course they are better they cost €950
It's a bit of a shame how i ve never heard of the gem, cambrian...
I reviewed it…others have too…at least you know of it now
J attend la bb54 de san martin avec impatience😅
Please show price in pounds for the uk

Thanks Boris, really glad you enjoyed it!
After seeing your review of the Cambrian I wanted to pick one up, but they are all sold out and Forteller aren't making any more of them. 😑

Hoping Forteller will release another batch of Cambrian as I’ve missed the boat first time round 😢

Have the blue Forteller and the bezel is super stiff, even after baby oil, WD-40, so not number 1 for me.
Have you never heard of Lorier? Hard to take a list like this seriously without the Neptune.
Thank you - the greatest problem of the Microbrands are the "Sold out". Please show watches only, if 70% are in depot. The nicest watch is nothing, if you are not able to buy it and your video is at least "for free".
Apparently, Cambrian watches are out of stock 😢

OK....my personal YT account....THIS ONE...I get my 'notifications to comments' turned off almost every day.....so I have to go in there and turn it back on.
I bought another kilo of silver from my long time supplier, last night......wish I haddnt had to sell off 250oz to buy a work truck......
AND.....and about DJT, he better get his head out of his ass about our 2A R-I-G-H-T-S.....THAT'S RIGHT, Mr.PRESIDENT.....RIGHTS!!!
I'll never pay hundreds of dollars for a watch brand I've never heard of such as "WISE".
First comment!
