We used to have selling cooked foods when I was young and help me to finish my studies it's really helpful.
Here in my barangay in the province there are around 15 sari-sari stores and 50 houses. I think 4 have a serious business. It's mostly hidden unemployment. A family member has a job abroad or in the city and helps them set up the store. It is literally 24/7. My neighbour frequently gets people shouting at the door to wake them up because they want to buy a cigarette.
Yes it's 24/7 for little reward, but bless their hard work.

This is my first time commenting and I just want to share my thoughts with regards to having a sari-sari store as I have mine. There are other stores around the area but I have the lowest prices. You can definitely make money with cigarettes alone. And I try to sell other items too and even snacks like merienda to make the most of what I can earn daily. Though I am not located in a similar area where your wife’s mom’s store is at, but I can pay the bills with it. I believe what most people think why sari-sari store is not a good business is because most of your money is on the stocks and of course you need to fill your store as often as you should for people to be drawn to you than the other stores near you. As long as you have almost everything what people are looking for and you make good relationship with them, they’d be your “suki”. A suki is a loyal customer but of course you avoid them to get stuffs thru credit, that’s the main reason why most stores don’t last because of “pautang”.
I have a good friend whom I worked with in the same company where her husband works now as a department head but my friend earns more than what her husband’s. She gets ₱3k-₱4k net daily so her neighbors are now opening their stores just beside her but still her suki buys from her. She started small but she’s been consistent. And now she’s about to open another branch.
At first, just like any other business and even with employment, you start small. You may think you’re not making enough, but it still is better than not making anything at all right? Just like the Chinese businesspeople, they sell items even at ₱1 profit per item but if you sum it all up, it can definitely make you money.
Okay, I’ve said a lot already 🙈 pardon me for that.

Yeah, typical micro business model in the Philippines. All competitors strangling each other unless you have an èdge. Establishing yourself is an edge in foods but you have to keep the consistency of quality and taste up. Of course a great cook with ideas works well IMO.

If they’re born there…..then they are Filipino for life.
If she allows her passport to run out and only has her American one, yes of course she can reapply but if she hasn't she is technically not a citizen.
