- Waterleaf, or Talinum Triangulare, is a nutritious and versatile leafy green, and saving its seeds can help you enjoy a continuous supply. Here’s a step-by-step guide to expertly harvest and save waterleaf seeds:
1. Identify Mature Seed Pods
Waterleaf seeds are ready for harvesting when the seed pods are dry and brown. Look for pods that are fully matured, as immature seeds are less likely to germinate.
2. Harvest the Seed Pods
Gently remove the dry seed pods from the plant. You can either pinch them off by hand or use small pruning scissors to avoid damaging the plant.
3. Collect and Dry the Seeds
Place the harvested seed pods in a paper bag or on a tray in a cool, dry place. After a few days, the pods will open naturally, releasing the seeds.
4. Separate and Clean the Seeds
Once the pods open, separate the seeds by sifting or gently rubbing them between your hands. Remove any remaining pod fragments to ensure you only keep viable seeds.
5. Store the Seeds Properly
Place the cleaned seeds in a paper envelope or an airtight container. Label the container with the date and store it in a cool, dark location to maintain seed viability.
Save black seeds for next planting season.
To propagate waterleaf by stems...put the stems in water or directly plant them in wet compost if your weather is warm outside and new shoots should grow after a few day.
In the UK, its Autumn, the stems in water have been on a sunny windowsill for a few days and roots have started to develop with new shoots.
Change water every 2 days
To plant rooted stems, evenly spread compost in a container, water the compost and plant the stems.
