    I want to quickly share with everyone why I'm so interested in this case! One reason is that I live so close to New Hamp, and I believe that this is deeper than anything Possible.. I love this podcast I can't wait for the Doc! I hope she is found later and if this was my daughter I would do anything to help! Thank you all and please Pray for her!!!

    As a NH resident living in a small town, I can most definitely agree with the negative or uncomfortable feelings that are associated with living/visiting rural towns in the north. As Fred Murray suggests, there is a "local blue brotherhood" that is heavily present and even noticeable among residents. There have been issues of corruption and unlawful protection done on the authorities part to protect friends and family in my town, for sure. Since I've immersed myself into this mystery, I cannot help but feel as if the Haverhill police had something to do with Maura's disappearance as well.

    It almost makes you think the police either A) Are covering up the fact they did a shitty ass job of investigation the case OR B) Covering the ass of one of there OWN...K-9's tracked her scent and it was gone as though she'd gotten into a vehicle ? Could it have been a police officer who kidnapped her ??? So many theories and angles to this...I hope with all my heart this case is solved...Fred's plea's break my heart every time..

    Here are some things that a detective should take into account. 1. The road is windy and treacherous especially during winter. 2. Because of reason one any person travelling the road is most likely doing so because they live in the area or they are commuting to/from work. 3. Maura Murray is the random variable to this situation. Her presence on the road is random chance. 4. Any person that she would have met or accepted a ride from would be because they are on the road due to reason number two. 5. So how unlikely is it that Maura encountered a person that just happened to be randomly travelling a treacherous road that is otherwise out of the way because of two large interstates on either side of it? Very. 6. Maura most likely decided to hoof it, or simply run, due to the fact she was a cross country runner back to civilization or help. That is when she encountered a person, much like the bus driver, who lived or worked (maybe a second or third shift) and offered help a second time and she decided to accept. After that who knows. Probably nothing good. So where are people employed who live in the area and work second and third shifts? Who travels that out of the road every day around the time she "wrecked". Those are the suspects.

    I'm confused if john worked at clarks trading post & met/knew Tim & Faith Westman there why in Ep 16 when approached by Tim Westman mowing his lawn he did not recognise john? The more I listen the more unimportant holes appear in his stories which makes me question his insights in other areas as well as the strength of his facts. The "4 missing dispatch calls" on the night were easily cleared up by KF, the holes in witness A description he gave in his 2nd interview etc. Is John Smith 100%? Cop for 3 years, chef for 21 a host of other jobs claimed. Starting to really sound like an exaggerator.... You need to push him harder on his facts boys.

    Everytime I hear about the woods and the mountain being such a dangerous place but at the same time hearing that Fred is going out there in the wilderness all alone I start fearing for him, too.
    You know, these guys saw him enter the coffee shop looking like he has been through some serious bush, you got to think. Is it safe for him to go all alone there? I am not talking about someone harming him, but the mountain, forests and the elements vs his age and maybe even overestimating himself. He should be careful.

      I live an hour, if that, south of there. Its country, but not a national park. There are houses around the accident site. The Connecticut river follows 112. There isnt a heck of a lot of places for her to have died and remained unfound, as in she ran off and succumbed to the elements. I truly believe someone abducted her. Who is the billion dollar question.

    "Who Watches The Watchmen" always seemed like such a cool quote. It sucks to know it was ripped off of "Who Guards the Guards"... I guess it actually makes sense seeing that the Watchmen Graphic Novel was supposed to be a critique on the American Dream and was very much a cultural period piece. Albeit being a semi-fictional spin on reality it's more so what could happen at the rate we are going. Reusing and modifying the quote actually seems genius now that I think about it.

    I understand Mr. Murray's frustration with the police, but I think it I'll founded.
    The only crime the police were aware of the night Maura went missing was "leaving the scene of an accident." Note this is the type of crime that solves itself as car will either be reported stolen or the owner will show up wanting their car.
    Although there were signs of drinking and driving, that fact doesn't mean detectives should be called to the scene.
    The declaration that two days later the state police were unaware of Maura being missing is not suprising even if a State Trooper was on the scene of the accident. Local authorities responded to a report of a traffic accident not a kidnapping or missing persons report.
    As was declared in the episode New Hampshire being the "live free or die state" means an adult can walk off down the road if they walk and that does not make them a missing person. The presents of the alcohol tells the cops the driver has motive to hide from them. So how much effort do you put into finding an adult who has declined assistance, left on their own power, and may be hiding? How long does an EMT stay on the scene of an accident where there is no subject?
    While I wish the cop on the scene had of looked at the incident with the love of a father, like Mr. Murray describe in his release recently, but the fact is that him not doing so does not mean he did a poor job.
    It is my understanding that done a lot of investigation into this case. They have interviewed a lot of witnesses and conducted searches.
    While it is easy to look at things like the rag in the tail pipe later and determine that some other action should have been taken, that is not the context of what the individuals at the scene were experiencing. They might have figured someone believed it would help a car having compression problems.
    I support the FBI getting involved if there is anything they can do to help, but I believe it is a mistake to attempt to do that by running down the people who have been working on this case.
    If Maura entered a car or a house or was pulled into a car or a house, that would not be the fault of the police. It would be the results of a young woman having an accident that put her in a compromised position a predator took adjantage of. If the car was sabotaged, then the compromised position was simply traveling alone on the wrong day in the wrong place.

    The clincher. LOL. YOU'RE A JOKE SMITH! Talk about nonsense spin. Fred Murray complains about "three different versions of the facts" when any elementary school child can tell that the differences are not worth complaining about! Variation one is obviously a bad/cut off copy of the Haverhill log. The second variation is that the times from when the dispatchers entered their narratives into the computer is missing, and the third omission is Fred Murray's personal home address! They didn't redact that in the log they gave him! Come on! Disingenuous to say the least!

    I'm very confident that the very first reaction of most young people who got into a minor accident that DID NOT include another car would absolutely be to start the car and get the fuck out of there if the car was drivable. I find it very hard to believe that Maura would have left her car there if it was drivable. She 100% would have gotten the fuck out of there. I don't believe the Saturn started for her. Maybe the rag in tail pipe prevented the car from starting, or the air bags being deployed triggered something in the cars computer and that prevented the immediate start up. The only explanation for Maura leaving her car if it did start was a tandom driver scooping her up. One more time and I can't stress this enough, there is no reason for Maura not to drive away if the was drivable. None at all

    $4000 wouldn't get you too far. Also, I really think the reason Maura's friends are mum about what happened the night of the party is because something happened, something traumatic or embarrassing, and her friends/family don't think talking about it will do anything to help solve the case; all it will do, in their minds, is further tarnish Maura's memory and distract from the pertinent details of the case. I of course believe all details are important. But I understand why they wouldn't want to discuss it if they don't think it's helpful.

    Ok so there are a couple questions i have: 1- John Smith seems pretty convinced it was Maura at 7:05 on Swiftwater rd. Yet i havent heard him address why she would be there when its not on the way to where she was going. What the heck is she doing over there? On the map i see a community health center. Was it there in 2004, aand if it was, has anyone looked to see if she ever went there regarding an abortion (not my favorite theory, but remaining open to all possibilities. 2- Why does Butch Atwood go back to French Pond rd when he and the cop search for her later when thats back in the direction where all the emergency vehicles have come from. Did they get a report of someone matching her description over there? It just seems youd search the direction she was headed and not the direction she came from and all the responders have already driven past...

      +Jason Hebert I have no answers for you, just joining the discussion.
      I'm not really sure what to make of the "7:05 Call". I've only read one account of it myself, the one from "Anne":
      "There was an emergency transmission on February 9, 2004 about a female slid off the road, may have left in private vehicle and a description. Now, I cannot say who put that out there because I do not know. There was then a call to go all the way to the scene, it all was a busier than usual scanner traffic . I am not an originator of a second accident, although it makes sense to me. I now know that Woodsville Emergency services did not go there at 7 pm when the original call was broadcast. There was a 7 pm call about female slid off the road and may have left in private vehicle with reference to swiftwater road."
      I've heard she wasn't the only person to hear this call, but I've never read those other accounts personally. I've also heard that there was a possibility that this may have been a call in Bridgewater that may have been misheard as Swiftwater, however there are no calls from this time period on the Bridgewater log that was released. Perhaps this call is on the Hanover log? Perhaps it never happened? Perhaps we'll never know. I'd be interested if anyone had any more info on any of this.
      Why Maura would be in the area her car was found can only be speculated about at this point, given the info we have.
      About searching French Pond Road and only going West; That is a good question. The account of the Red Truck Witness also mention the EMS and State Trooper searching West of the accident when they encountered her. There is nothing mentioned on the logs about any sightings at all, to lead them one way or another. Not sure how much they searched going East that night, if at all. I would hope they did.

    So, I've always been fascinated in this case for the sheer reason of the events leading up to her disappearance. It's such a bizarre situation. If it was just a young girl who didn't have a troubling background (and by back ground, I mean, at the time she was struggling in her life with alcohol, the whole stolen credit card thing, and the lies to her supervisor from work and the school on the day she went missing) we could more than likely point the finger towards an abduction, especially if the person didn't have any motive to leave. However, that's not the case with Maura. So, if I'm just going to throw out a theory, it would be this: Maura Murray's plan was to "escape" and "disappear." Maybe not forever, but for a week as she told her supervisor and the school, albeit a lie about the family emergency. Perhaps she wanted to clear her head and just "recharge." I believe that she wanted to disappear, and then the wreck happened. During this time, I believe she was abducted, which is crazy to assume simply because of the time-frame of the situation.
    I mean, if she was abducted, you're talking about a one in a million shot of this being perfect timing because I don't think (if she was abducted) that this person or persons was on the "hunt" for an abduction. It just somehow became a perfect opportunity. Like I said, it's crazy to assume, but at this point, it's the only answer that makes sense to me, since this case and the events leading up to it are weird enough. Then, if true, that's the biggest problem of all because it's more along the lines of, well, if Maura wanted to disappear on her own volition, she's an adult and she's allowed to do so. However, if she was trying to escape, gets into an accident and someone abducts her, is she alive or dead? If she is alive, even after the hypothetical abduction, does she still even want to be found? Maybe she does if it's an Ariel Castro type of thing, you know, but who knows. This entire case doesn't make sense to me. So my theory that I'm sticking with for now is she wanted to disappear. She was in the process of making that happen. She got into an accident which put a dent into her plans, which is why she told Butch that she already called AAA, and that she was fine. Butch leaves to his house, and Maura is processing the situation and trying to figure out her best option, and an opportunistic killer or kidnapper just happens to be at the "right place at the right time."
    What else could it be? I'm trying to wrap my head around it. She couldn't have just gone walking down the road, she would have been seen surely. Or if she did and wasn't seen (maybe hiding in the woods if she saw headlights coming down the road, yet no footprints have been found which is another baffling thing) she couldn't have gone far. It's winter. It's cold. If she was drinking during that drive, she would have to eventually eat and drink something. She would have had to stop somewhere to get food/water/whatever. She could have stolen food and stuff from houses or stores, but if so, surely there would be police reports reporting that something was stolen. You cannot survive, especially in winter, drinking alcohol and then becoming dehydrated due to that alcohol. That leaves only one option in my mind: Abducted, UNLESS her body is in the woods somewhere and somehow hasn't been found OR she drowned somewhere, but I don't think so (I could be wrong). Therefore, I genuinely believe she was abducted. And I also believe that the case is very solvable. And I wholeheartedly believe the cops know something, or if not some of them, one of them do. In my own opinion, I think a cop is behind this entire thing.
    I also have another theory, and I'll state it now, it has the smallest chance of being true. Regardless, though, it's nice to share the theories we all have because it could somehow lead to something and a clue. That theory is: What if it was all staged? A lot of people are under the impression that the cop or the SUV (001) is involved in a negative way, but what if he isn't (if he was even there). Let's say she wrecked on purpose ... Maura told Butch not to call the authorities and that she was fine. And then, out of the blue in just a matter of minutes, the supposedly cop SUV was seen by witness A. That's very good timing. Perhaps Maura and this "cop" were in on it together and he helped Maura escape, and that's why there was a wreck that wasn't that bad, a rag in the tailpipe (maybe trying to tell the community that it was foul play and it looked as if someone tampered with her car to make it look like she was in a horrible accident that could be murder, and that's why she bought alcohol to make it seem like she was driving drunk and crashed, when in reality it was just a cover-up. That could explain why some of her items were missing in the car and explain how she just vanished into thin air in a matter of moments.

    Is it possible that went through one of the Mass or NH tolls as she headed up to NH that day 2/9/2004? If someone could figure out approximately when she would have hit the tolls, maybe the DOT in Mass could go though the video images to determine if someone else was with her.

    Could Williams have come on the seen after bus driver, told Maura to get into his SUV, she packs bag in trunk, gets in SUV...,jumps out of SUV (to escape drunk driving charge..)..when it slows down....Chief W. then continues down road in same direction. ..when Sheetrock guy starts coming down road, sees Maura running to hide....Sheetrock guy slows but continues down road....Williams turns around and gets her and accidentally kills her....THEN TELLS PEOPLE ACROSS FROM ACCIDENT TO LIE ABOUT SEEING HIM OR HIS BLUE LIGHTS....

    I'm a newspaper reporter, and my very first job was in the North Country, in a small town just like this one. (I was born and raised in a big city, though.) And man, the climate of a place like these takes some getting used to - everybody knowing everybody else, the roads named after the people living on them, the fire chief also owning the newspaper while also owning the diner while also owning a tow lot, etc. I'm getting kinda itchy listening to this and being whisked back in time, lol.

      There is nothing strange about small towns or the people in them. Large cities are far more dangerous and therefore should ultimately be the scarier of the two.

    I don't buy all the darkness talk or a fictional time travel atmosphere or "energy" talk.. The times I was in the White Mountains it seemed like a nice place. They may be reading into things and expect and notice spooky things happening. Those things happen all the time no matter where you are. You just don't notice them. But I do like their take from the live show.

    • @XFHgog

      Agreed. Comments like those are from people that should probably stay in a city. There is no "soul" of an old forest (by the way all forests are old whether they be in New England, the Deep South, or even California). These are just imaginings of people that have little outdoor experience. Stop watching so many dumb horror movies and be rational. I have not been to NH, but I have been in the Rockies of CO (larger and higher range) and have never had the thoughts discussed by the podcasters.
      Also NH is an open carry state, so anyone can wear a sidearm. It isn't surreal for John Smith to wear one.

    Isn't the most likely explanation that when she saw the police coming she went and hid in the woods because she had been drinking and driving? Then tripped, fell and hit her head and succumbed to the elements. Her body then consumed by animals. I would think the real effort should be in helping Fred search the woods. How confident are you that the woods have been thoroughly searched? Obviously Fred is not confident in it or he would have stopped looking.

      +jclaunch00 what do your think the most logical explanation is?

    • @vongray
      @vongray 8 лет назад +3

      +Jeremy Maddux It doesn't seem like the sort of crime that could have been planned. I agree though that it is possible a killer stumbled across her. I just think playing the odds the most logical and obvious explanation is probably what happened. Any way you slice it is perplexing and fascinating.

    • @vongray
      @vongray 8 лет назад

      I don't know. It's a mystery. But I don't have much faith that the police did a detailed investigation of the scene as they seem to have assumed she had run off because she had been drinking. So I think it is possible they missed something. Also if she wanted to hide out until the police were gone, she could have avoided leaving an obvious foot print trail. It wouldn't take much for thought to realize that they would find her if she left tracks that lead right to her.

    • @vongray
      @vongray 8 лет назад +2

      +Jeremy Maddux Ya I think it highly unlikely that she is hiding out. I think she either died of exposure or was abducted. There is a good CBC podcast called Some One Knows Something about a boy that disappeared in the woods. The guy doing the podcast is now taking cadaver dogs out to the location to do a search. Amazingly that had never been done. I think it would be worth doing the same in this case.

    I am curious the protocols on for officers calling out EMS and fire. And then the EMS protocol for missing persons in this situation. And for the specific period that Maura went missing being protocols do change and evolve. Each service area isn't always the same as neighboring service areas. My husband is an EMS supervisor/paramedic. And in his service area, an accident doesn't automatically send out fire.

    The fact that she left town with $280, and had told people she would be gone a week, lends support that she was either meeting others, or had a tandem driver, because it would take others footing part of the excursion to be able to stay away a week.

I have a question regarding the ppl investigating this case,.Is there like a war between certain ppl who are trying to solve this case? 30min NTO this podcast they played some1 named James asking questions at a conference on the case & pcast host said the Q&A Moderator stuck his hand out and this James guy refused to shake his hand..If there is a war, what's the basis& who's involved. Seems silly,when there is 1 goal every1 Shud work together. But I've seen it n forums discussing the jon Benet Ramsey case..1 group thinks intruder,1 group thinks the brother& another think Patsy & if u disagree with 1 groups theory they hurl f bombs & tell u how stupid u are

      It could have something to do with the fact that James Renner is really hard to trust. It's difficult to know whether he really wants to solve the case, or whether he's just another vulture-like investigative journalist trying to inflame and cast outlandish suspicions. Renner has certainly had more than his fair share of head-butts with people since he started investigating this case.

      By the looks of the photo.. the airbag never came completely out - just cracked open.. Most cars can't be driven once they are deployed unless you poke a hole in them and deflate.

      I am not an "airbag expert" on 1996 Saturn's or any other cars.. I just was going by the photo. I have been in a car when the airbag deploys.. of course it don't STAY inflated but it would be OUT of the case. I am not retarded but just giving an opinion on this subject. The car has to trigger the sensor to deploy the airbag. I do believe people can be civil to each other without name calling. That don't solve anything.
