Those expensive, glossy TV adverts back in the day didn't help. Paying stars to appear in their adverts, the same people whose record labels etc. were trying to shut down MegaUpload for piracy for 'sharing their copyrighted material'. xD
That says it all really... 'how dare you steal my music/film', 'a million dollars to appear in your advert, yes please'.

Besides, as was said, they literally took many pieces of content of the sort down after it was reported. Sure, it existed for some amount of time, but the much larger source of content that existed was of movies and all, which many had taken down as well.
I would say that this was more so only fair if he had been in charge of mega upload and purposely ignored such content while having it be reported by people, which is not the case.

It's not just a service issue, it's an "Accessibility" issue. If we are not able to access the media, product, or material that we want, then we have to go out of our way, or band together with other people, to commit and upload it for the others to use as they see fit. Without accessibility, there would be no service.

I always find this "quote" rather hilarious because seemingly very few know the origin and just quote it from other people. It comes from an interview in 2006/7 where an interviewer asks how Steam became the biggest legal online retailer in Russia by having 20% of the digital sales market in Russia (again in 2006), with Gabe just giving marketing spin. Within that same interview the interviewer notes that still the vast majority of games in Russia are pirated and that Steam is the only player in the market with other legal vendors avoiding Russia.
And all that also ignores Steams rather heavy (default) use of regional pricing both back then and now.
It wasn't giving better service that made Steam the biggest legal digital games retailer in Russia, it was being the only one actually doing it and giving cheaper prices than buying them from western sources. And as for beating "piracy", back then most games were still pirated and modern Russia is still king of game piracy. And even back then most digital game sales in Russia were legally gray or black market sales.
"Piracy is a service issue" quote is just marketing spin to avoid saying "yea we're the biggest legal retailer of digital games in Russia by being the only legal retailer of digital games in Russia".

New Zealand's cops (and I live here) are not to be trusted. They tend towards egotism and regularly use excessive force or trample on people's basic rights. The NZ government sanctioned using a USW on peaceful protestors which Police happily went along with (during the Wellington Protest). At the same protest they also pepper spray bombed tents of sleeping people, including children. They used excessive force on another kid who was doing nothing but participating the peaceful protest. Every. Single. Time. protests in this country turn bad, it's Police inciting violence yet Every. Single. Time it's peaceful protestors who get blamed and our MSM is all too happy to spout whatever propaganda the govt tells them too.
People have tried getting judicial reviews (our equivalent of suing the govt) but the only thing that comes out of it is that the courts side with the govt and we once again get reminded that human rights are a joke in this country and whatever flavour of the month party is in will do whatever keeps them elected.

Sounds to me like complying your way out of tyranny, but I think that is being kind of complacent with the situation. Authority should derive from consent of the governed, not from threat of force. I'd like to see a world where the gains from machines and automation was used to set us free from work and bring an era of voluntarism. In my opinion we should keep striving for a better way of doing things. Intelligence begins with "I don't know", and it flourishes with "I was wrong." What is more important than people thinking you're good, is people trusting that you'll always be honest. I genuinely feel like the world is full of intelligent people who want to do the right thing and we just need to see a better way of doing things, but right now democracy seems to be gamed by bad actors and the world happens at such a fast pace, that politics have devolved to a simple yet complex tool for winning the modern battleground of "public opinion". Don`t tell the truth, just keep talking.

I'll fucking wait for the results of that. I play a lot of path of exile - a game with a free market barter economy. There is a group that does RMT and has a monopoly on the trading. My friends and I found exploits with patches that caused the developers to step in and do something because we could compete with this group who gives the devs a cut via their shell rmt company based in christchurch nz - so it wasn't actually the people with control of the market that were able to maintain a monopoly because they were also botting, breaking terms of service, and social engineering. Yep, people forget that he didn't really want to stay in Russia. He was trying to find asylum in Western countries and got denied. He tried Hong Kong and got told to pound sand by the Chinese. He even declined Putin's original offer of asylum - it was conditional on him shutting up and ceasing any activities that could upset Uncle Sam. Snowden found the balls to say no (while staying in the transit zone of an airport in Moscow no less) and continued shopping for asylum elsewhere.
He only settled on Russia after it was made clear that he would never make it to Sourh America in the first place. And at no point did Putin actually want him to stay, spoiling the relationship with the US of A for zero gain. But giving him up after all of that big talk about standing up to Uncle Sam would have made him look like a bitch. And he really hates looking like a bitch. So Snowden was granted asylum, along with a heartfelt wish of "we hope you leave Russia as soon as an opportunity to do so presents itself". I'm not kidding, that's almost a literal translation of a quote by Putin.
People see Russia as some kind of a negative of US of A. If Uncle Sam wants you for something, Mother Russia will greet you with open arms. And the more Uncle Sam wants you, the warmer the welcome in Moscow. Nope. Russia will try to trade its spies and assassins back. But no one in Moscow would give two fucks about Kim Dotcom. He's neither a Russian asset, nor famous enough to matter.

      Yes, yes you should.
If you have some old VHSs that you can't use because all of the VCRs are basically non-existent.
And you have the know-how or are able to use AI to help you you should be able to use tech to uncode all of the stuff you paid for and archive it so that it doesn't become lost media lost forever.
For two reasons one because you could be telling the truth about a movie that you've actually seen and people will try to put you in a psych ward because they don't believe it exists and because you can't provide evidence because you're not legally allowed to do the thing that we're talking about.
But too because I personally believe that if you love something it is your right to make sure that something never gets destroyed and we have seen the companies will throw their material under the bus because they want the new stuff to thrive they don't care about the old stuff.
Personal expression is a right and if, duplicating this thing that you love very much because you respect the original artist and don't want their work to be disappeared forever because a corporation does not value it anymore well that should in fact be your right
