RUclips subtitles does have support for positioning and changing the colour of the text (as well as bold, italics, etc.). Most subtitlers just don't use those features. The karaoke thing is a pretty clever implementation of this: have a new subtitle for every time a syllable is read, with the only change from the previous subtitle being the colour tag now includes the new syllable.
Probably time-consuming as fuck though, compared to regular subs. Or maybe there's some program out there that automates much of this for you. Either way, mad props for doing this for both English and Japanese.
