I've been to Japan 5 times already and I still watched this entire video because it reminded me of my first time in the country! I'll never forget the experience of taking the train from narita to Tokyo and see all the kanjis on the buildings; that was the moment I realized I was truly in Asia!!
@@ArchangelAurora Hi! I actually just came back from Japan a week ago. Everything is still up-to-date and his tips are great. I would add/expand on the following tho: 1) If you can arrive at Haneda do so because it is cheaper to get to Tokyo (specifically Shinjuku/Shibuya which is probably where you'd stay as a young tourist) 2) SIM cards are great. However, if you have a phone that's "locked" by your cellular provider then you only have two real options: use their international plan which depending on the company (cough cough AT&T) can be very expensive or rent a mobile wifi. Mobile WiFi is great if you're traveling with several friends/family as you can share the data (although the battery of the mobile wifi might drain much faster) 3) He didn't mention this but the JR Pass is dead. The company increased the prices by almost 70%, which renders the pass almost useless unless you're planning on having a lot of day trips that require the Shinkansen (bullet train). Just remember if you get the pass, that the JRPass doesn't cover the metro or city buses! 4) I have an iPhone and I use BOTH google maps and apple maps, they kinda complement each other, but you'd probably be fine with only google maps. 5) I haven't stayed in a capsule hotel since the second time I traveled to Japan because I now travel with my GF. Generally speaking, if you are traveling with someone else I would recommend booking an AirBnB in an area near Shinjuku/Shibuya (when staying in Tokyo, of course). Most (90%) of the AirBnBs that we've booked are incredible, even when they are not hosted by a "Super Host". That's just Japan's work ethic at its best, everything is clean. 6) Don't get a taxi from the airport to your hotel/Airbnb!! Just don't. What I'd recommend if it is your first time traveling to Japan is, get in a train (like the Narita express or local rapid trains) to the station closest to where you're staying at and from there you can take a taxi just because if you have the address in Japanese it can be easier for the driver to actually find your hotel/airbnb (specially true for Airbnb) 7) Japan had a shortage of materials to make the IC cards, so they are not giving the "old IC cards" anymore; rather you, the tourist, can get a "temporary IC card" which expires in some amount of time (I can't remember how long, but it wasn't more than a month or so) the airports have signs as to where you can get them. BUT I recommend, if you have Apple Pay, to just add a mobile Suica card to your apple wallet and just add money to that digital card. It works great and it is identical to having the physical card (you don't need a deposit either). Either option is recommended. I hope that information helps!
I’ve lived off of Google maps the last 4 times I’ve been to Japan. One recommendation is to screenshot the directions if using public transit. Same with any other city’s transit, if you refresh the directions en route, you may lose your original choice. Second, there are often so many options in Tokyo (ie JR, Toei, etc) that a route you found may not exist minutes later because of Google’s algorithm to try to find the fastest routing, regardless of which transit line it’s on. So screenshot if you don’t want to lose a search result.
Google Maps is OK, but has serious drawbacks in trying to get you around buildings as you are being directed to walk through solid walls without being told that you should be up or down several flights of stairs.
Wow! Literally just touched down in Tokyo for the first time ever a few hours ago and you release this. Railway systems were for sure overwhelming but it didn’t take too long to get the hang of it. As someone who lived in Japan a few years, Paolo is right on the money with his info. Now one thing about the sim cards, make sure your phone can take sim cards outside of your country. Here in the US, some providers lock their phones only to the US but most of them can unlock it for you if you call them before you leave. Sometimes it takes 24-72 hours to get the unlock information, sometimes you have to go to one of their corporate stores to do it. So check with your provider. Also check if your phone can operate on international frequencies, most 3G and 4G ones can.

It would be a long international flight for me and a shower upon landing would be ever so wonderful. I'm keeping all the information you talked about for my dream trip. Thank you soooooo much!
@@ozzydem My trip was limited to just Tokyo because my mom and other older folks was with us. Plus it was my partner's first trip to Japan. So about 5 days in Tokyo. Great video and info. I will add that the JR Rail Pass does actually work on any local metro train in Tokyo as long as it's run by JR. You just have to flash your JR pass to the attendant office at the gate when you walk in/out (as opposed to tapping in and out with your Suica/Passmo card). It even works on the Narita Express (NEX) train and covers your tickets going to and from Narita to Tokyo. If you're going to Hokkaido, it also works in getting passage on the JR trains to Hakodate from Aomori. Lots of benefits with the JR pass for visitors!

If you don't want to fork out the 700-1000 yen per day for a SIM card, google maps actually functions as a real map with directional awareness for the most part (or at least did on my samsung galaxy s5). You can't search for anything, but if you know where you're going or just need a general sense, you can save money and rest assured that you can use your google maps on your phone without service. Then, if you want to search, set directions, or refresh your map (because it will remember a large area, but not every detail of everything unless you pre-load it) you can connect to wifi and keep on moving in Tokyo! (Most other areas/rural areas will not have this luxury).
@@MajorG25 ah yes, I think you are right, I was with a group so that was the consideration, but we risked it and it was fine, but I have lived in japan for 4 years so I was able to navigate somewhat
Also, if you guys are coming soon, you can download the Google Maps map (lol) onto your phone in a bunch of areas so when you use Google Maps, it doesn't actually use any data. Used this for my Hawaii trip and plan to do the same for Tokyo. The downloads last 30 days before they are auto deleted!
Pretty good information on this video! Only thing I want to comment on it the Modal Sims, even though it advertise that the sim is unlimited data, that is not exactly true. There is a 3GB limit per day, and if you exceed that limit, they can reduce your speed dramatically for up to 48 hours! I understand if they cap and maybe restart the next day, but 48 hours is a long time to be without service when trying to navigate around.
Good luck with the heat lol....at least you aren’t going in August...hottest and most humid temps of the year...you only need to be outside a few seconds to be drenched in sweat and it’s apparently the wettest time too
JR passes are not worth it in most cases. They are too limiting in the big cities (ie, they can only be used on around 40% of the trains in Tokyo) and the price isn't worth it unless you are making at least 3 Tokyo-Osaka distance trips during the pass period.
@@lifeintokyo3048 Thank you! We've rented a campervan and the plan is to stick to the country roads. Really keen spend some time in the Izu Peninsular.
Rossa Amalia he lives in Tokyo so i don't expect him to cover other areas, but it's pretty much the same thing. Express bus from Kansai to Osaka (didn't see any train rails there which makes sense because it's an artificial island), which will take about 30-45 minutes depending where in the city you have to be. From Osaka to Kyoto, just hop on the trains at Mamba or Shin-Osaka and you will be at Kyoto central station in 30 minutes. Japan's public transport is so well oiled it really deserves the reputation it has, no need to worry.
If you're going from Kyoto/Osaka to Kansai Airport, your fastest option is to take the JR Haruka that drops you right at the airport. The Haruka leaves every 30min from Kyoto Station or Shin-Osaka and Tennoji Station if you're staying in Osaka.
1st thing u need to know when u first arrive in japan is u need to fill up the immigration card & declaration form ....to save time ask from ur air Stewardess for the forms For travelling I use CityMaps2Go cos u no need to use 4g data to download the map & track ur location.... u preload download the map of any city into ur phone and they use telephone signal to triangulate ur location without using 4g data
Just a warning about Mobal: with them you pay for a full month every month regardless of when you leave Japan, so for example if you leave on the 10th of a month you will still be billed for the amount until the 30th of the month. So effectively they scam you out of some money during the month you leave.

That sounds like pocket wifi prices. When I was there, I paid about 2500 yen every 1-1.5 weeks for 2GB of data
I wished you made this video last year! I went for the first time from New York in August. None the less it was an amazing experience!
Pretty good information on this video! Only thing I want to comment on it the Modal Sims, even though it advertise that the sim is unlimited data, that is not exactly true. There is a 3GB limit per day, and if you exceed that limit, they can reduce your speed dramatically for up to 48 hours! I understand if they cap and maybe restart the next day, but 48 hours is a long time to be without service when trying to navigate around.
prophets what sim card can you recommend then?
Your videos are the best!! ❤️ I'm going to Japan for the first time in July and your videos have been super helpful!
@@lifeintokyo3048 hey so does it rain a lot or not that much? I'm planning the second half of July, thanks
@@sushrutachousalkar x f,xf,d I
Good luck with the heat lol....at least you aren’t going in August...hottest and most humid temps of the year...you only need to be outside a few seconds to be drenched in sweat and it’s apparently the wettest time too
You missed converting JR pass to a valid dated pass. Can use the JR pass on JR line trains instead of SUICA
JR passes are not worth it in most cases. They are too limiting in the big cities (ie, they can only be used on around 40% of the trains in Tokyo) and the price isn't worth it unless you are making at least 3 Tokyo-Osaka distance trips during the pass period.
@@magical_catgirl exactly what I'm doing in a week ! Looking forward to it 😁
I'll be in Japan in May and this video has come at exactly the right time. Thanks Paolo!
@@lifeintokyo3048 Thank you! We've rented a campervan and the plan is to stick to the country roads. Really keen spend some time in the Izu Peninsular.
Can you make video for kansai airport? And information about transportation to osaka/kyoto too?
The Haruka leaves every 30min from Kyoto Station or Shin-Osaka and Tennoji Station if you're staying in Osaka.
glad I found this video. Planning to go to Tokyo later this year and this is great info for solo travelers like me
ight we gonna ignore how he was walking like CJ at the start
From San Andreas?

🤣🤣🤣 yeah and the 50¢ in da club Japanese version
Foreigner: *arrives*
Paolo: Ah shit, here we go again
Another Awesome Video Paolo, I'm using your Video's to plan my trip to Japan. Thanks
1st thing u need to know when u first arrive in japan is u need to fill up the immigration card & declaration form ....to save time ask from ur air Stewardess for the forms
For travelling I use CityMaps2Go cos u no need to use 4g data to download the map & track ur location.... u preload download the map of any city into ur phone and they use telephone signal to triangulate ur location without using 4g data
Again, your video is so instructional. Very helpful for my visit. Thanks!!!
Another awesome video! Can't wait to go to Japan! Can you do a video about Yodabashi Camera;)
Thanks for the tips. I will definitely get that sim before I go there. Can’t wait.
😂👍 Ja🍳 Just my kind of humor.
I'll be moving to Japan soon and the sim card information you gave is going to be a lifesaver, thank you!
Just a warning about Mobal: with them you pay for a full month every month regardless of when you leave Japan, so for example if you leave on the 10th of a month you will still be billed for the amount until the 30th of the month. So effectively they scam you out of some money during the month you leave.
Cuzz your hellla helpful! Planning a trip to japan but I have know idea what to do! Thanks for the tips!!! Someone pay this man!
Can you do a “things to do in Ginza”?
It will be my first time to go to Japan on October, and this is very helpful. Thank you very much Paolo. Superb vlogging. God bless.
Going to Japan in 2 days 😂 ty
Ray Zheng Enjoy to the fullest ☺
Have fun I’m going on 7 weeks
Man you guys have me jelly! Original commentor is in Japan rn and my trip isn't until October 😭 been waiting 18 years for this since I was introduced to the culture!
Have fun all of you, just came back from a 2 week trip to Tokyo and surrounding cities, then Sapporo for the snow festival and then Hakodate, then down to Sendai and all the way down to Nagoya. Was my second trip in 4 months lol...had a blast each time!
Make sure to visit the basement level of the Takashimaya department store for food heaven!
@@ando1135 wow the snow festival would be SO cool. We are kind of broke lol so we are going in the fall season to save some money but we are definitely hoping for a Spring and Winter trip back
We found the city mapper app best for getting around. Tells which exits to take on the subway and a lot more details than google maps
