    Rent an ATV with sked or trailer for a week to haul trash and junk out and haul construction materials in. Don't bury it.

      @NadesikoRose Год назад +16

      I agree, never bury something unless it’s something that is easily biodegradable like wood or other things.
      Plus if you can fix up the trail, fill in the potholes with gravel and so on, you might be able to eventually drive your van up to the property and possible arrange for garbage pick up at the road end of your ‘driveway’

      @papabear562 11 месяцев назад +13

      Also agree, and you want to steer clear of breaking any environmental laws that the Canadian government might hit you with. In the meantime, do what you can to make the trail as passable as possible so you can get your van in and out. Leaving it parked so far from your place could result in it being stolen. Otherwise, great video and I will follow along to see how you're doing.

    You're going to want your bed elevated from the floor, especially when winter hits. Unless the crawl space has been insulated, the floor will be the coldest part of the house.

    You've done a lot of work. My thought is you need to prioritze access. Get a dirt road done up at least so you can get the van up there so you can remove stuff to the local dump (if there is one) and bring in supplies.

Just make sure that if your getting a foot of snow drag every four inches or you will not be able to pull the spring!

    You have got such a pile of trash you would honestly be better to burn the mattresses. Yes, I know they have chemicals in them do not burn them close to the cabin, and that way you have less of a quantity to bury, even though you would be better to get the road to where you can get a four wheeler or your van in And be able to take things out. I know this is a long time ago, but do not throw away the bunkbed. You will be amazed the things you can make with it, or use it in the garden for cucumbers or beans or morning glories to crawl over or many other options. Part of living off grid is re-utilizing everything that you can for something else. I probably would have kept the cabinets and the counter and painted them, on the floor, consider a epoxy paint so that it is durable. You will not want to sleep on a pallet on the floor, because heat rises and in the winter you will be sleeping in the coldest part of the cabin. Moving in drywall will not be easy. You may have to use tongue and groove pine to just cover the walls and that is OK. You make the best of what you have And it will be good in the end. I stumbled across your channel by accident and I am glad that I have. Also invest in a couple propane lanterns.

    • @malelpn37
      @malelpn37 8 месяцев назад +1

      Also, if you are tearing out those two walls, take out the drywall carefully you can use it to make repairs and finish off the last bedroom once you replace the insulation and put up a new vapor barrier

    With all the views , I would put in those big windows with access to the outside in that back room. it will make the cabin lighter , open it up. Leave two or three walls up. JUST a thought /same with kitchen. I have never understood why they build cabins in the middle of nowhere with beautiful , private views BUT NO WINDOWS. Mattresses are a pain in the butt, even when you have curb pickup! MAYBE Canada has some kind of junk pickup wilderness area? Have you figured access out ? decomposed granite is good I hear. I dont know if your aware that bunnies and other small mammals LOVE apple wood and owners like myself who dont want to give them wood laced in pesticides, etc find it hard to source. You can make some decent money selling me and others non gmo complexly free of chemicals, grown pure apple twigs, branches and if your crafty bunny toys! I would buy from you ! Hell, you could be my source. I think birds/parrots love them too. You are just going to have to get rid of it so why not make some decent money? That metal red bed can be repurposed into fire wood racks .Keep the wood dry, off the ground . Your doing a great job, it can be over whelming when your filled with so many projects and great ideas! Its going to be stunning!

    Ok wow you cleared out that place like a mother. Don't know why you burning some of that stuff. Those two cabinets you took off the wall are built better than those shelves in bedroom. The wood chairs can be cleaned and painted. I DO NOT like the idea of burying all that stuff. There has to be a better way. Reuse as much as you can for indoors or outdoor uses for the future. Once you get a road to the cabin you can haul out all the junk to be properly junked. Of course I don't know where your at or how far you are from a township. You may have to leave all the junk for next year. Winter is closing in and you need to focus on fixing the cabin.
    I think you could learn a few things for another Canadian who took the same road you did to the east coast a year ago. His cabin was just like yours when he started. He has been very resourceful with what he has managed to do on a very limited budget. He still has a way to go but I think he will be able to live in it this winter. Please check out his channel...Slim Potatohead. He is a adventurer also.

    I don’t know what your plans are, but it looks like you’ve tossed a lot of potentially useful stuff. Do you plan on opening a road access, otherwise that’s a major amount of hauling to bring in everything on your back. Are you going to live there permanently? How far is it to town?

    • @tyleranddobby
      @tyleranddobby  11 месяцев назад +5

      I’m still working on the road access. There’s three possibilities - the road I’m currently walking, the deeds legal access(ends at the Brook and not towards or near any road, making it landlocked currently), and another washed out road the locals have told me many years back they used to get trucks in but ATVers I’ve talked to can’t seem to find it and I can’t find it by foot, but with fall season trails start showing themself a bit more with the dead branches and leaves falling. All three possibilities go through different peoples property lines but I need to assess all of the options once I find this other “road”. It’s a cabin that was part of a draft dodger settlement. Winter… we’ll see. One step at a time. Worst case pick back up in the spring. Reality is I just got here 6 weeks ago, only so much I can do. I have the van worst case which is why I haven’t sold it to get a more suitable vehicle.

    We have a cabin in the woods off grid so I understand the work involved. We’ve owned it since 2009. We started living in it 6 months of the year. In the winter we go every other weekend because the only access is by snowmobile. We run everything by solar, back up generator. We now have running water, RV pump 12 volt. Our water comes from our brook behind the cabin that we pump into a 300g tote. We also just got starlink, good to have for rainy days and emergencies. We also put a garden in with a small greenhouse a few years ago.
    I love your property, it’s going to be so much fun getting it where you want it to be. I look forward watching you future videos. Best of luck!
