  • It seems remarkable to describe a week in which Donald Trump was hit by a would-be assassin’s bullet as a triumph. But images of his fist-pumping defiance and ecstatic crowds greeting his arrival at the Republican National Convention reflect a Presidential candidate who is experiencing what could be a decisive surge in popularity.
As Republicans and Democrats blamed each other for sowing the seeds of political violence through highly charged rhetoric, there also were calls on both sides for a change in tone: For unity and conciliation to replace enmity and intolerance.
On this episode of the Riz Khan Show, prominent Trump supporters and critics share their thoughts. And in a week when the former President’s legal team celebrated another landmark victory, we’ll consider the prospect of an all-powerful President enjoying immunity from prosecution.
    Show guests:
    Sebastian Gorka, Former Trump Advisor
Reed Galen - Co-founder of the Lincoln Project
Michael Gerhardt - Constitutional law professor at University of North Carolina
Since recording that interview, Donald Trump’s legal team celebrated more good news this week. A judge in Florida dismissed the criminal case in which Trump is accused of keeping classified documents after leaving office. The Trump-appointed judge decided that the appointment of the prosecution special counsel was unlawful. The Department of Justice plans to appeal and there are some calls for the judge to be taken off the case. But it effectively means there’s little chance of the case coming to trial before the election on November 5th.

Thanks @Al Arabiya English for sharing this crucial video! The Supreme Court recently ruled on Trump v. United States. Here's a summary of the key facts:
Former President Donald Trump faced indictment in August 2023 on four counts related to the January 6, 2021, Capitol attacks. Trump argued that he is immune from prosecution for his actions as president and that a former president cannot be prosecuted without prior impeachment by the House and conviction by the Senate.
U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan initially scheduled Trump's trial for March 4, 2024, but later postponed it pending resolution of his immunity claims. Despite Trump's motion to dismiss based on immunity, Judge Chutkan denied it. Special Counsel Smith sought expedited review from the Supreme Court, which initially deferred to the D.C. Circuit. Following the D.C. Circuit's affirmation of Chutkan's decision on February 6, Trump sought a stay, leading to the Supreme Court expediting the case.
    Definitions:
    - Indicted: formally accused of or charged with a serious crime.
    - Immunity: protection or exemption from legal action or prosecution.
