My belief is the song is about interracial love. This wjy it was banned by many US radio stations. There are also comments Michael made about it being about his time at school in Hong Kong.
One of my favourites from INXS .... Interracial dating was the original sin in America (It was ban in some states) .. the song always gave me positive vides on the subject listening to it in my teen years in the 80's till now ..
Btw, INXS was meant to be read like « in excess ».
