    I live an hour away from Moab. I lived in Moab in the early 80's. I will say that the very "community" that is trying to stop the closure is the same community that is causing the closures. The Jeep/UTV/motorcycle users have violated so many rules, so many closures, so many illegals trail that this was bound to happen and I'm very glad it is. I have seen people absolutely trash Moab. There are piles of poop, trash, and illegal trails all over the damn place! It's the very community that now is crying about closures that have a very large part in the closures. I shed not a single tear for the very people that have played a large role in this closure.
    The Kane Springs campground was closed because the owners can make more revenue by changing the campground into something else. It's private land and they can do what ever they want with it. I'm all for it...good for them. It's their land.
    As someone that lives close to Moab and rides White Rim, Chicken Corners, Lockhart Canyon, Top of the World and so many other fantastic places in this area, I look forward to less people, less vehicles, less chaos and stupid behavior. Moab has become a trash dump. Many people disrespect the land, disrespect the Indian rock art, disrespect the very land they say they want to remain open.
    Good riddance to those that have brought this upon themselves......

    The amount of people that I see go off trails and not care about really anyone or anything was pretty disgusting last time I was there so I actually get why all the closures are/is happening. Majority were SxS drivers, I still think they are the worst in the offroad community by far, but not all are bad so it kind of sucks for the good majority.

    Living in the northeast this has been a common situation. The long term effect whether intentional or not is to consolidate the ohv crowd into ever smaller areas that become overused to the point of complete closure. We lost our local recreational area when the hiking crowd collaborated with the MTB crowd to have the OHV group removed, the hiking crowd then hd the MTB group removed and finally the hiking people lost their own access when the corrupt politicians who "helped" them through this process procured the properties at artificially low prices and them sold them to developers. We now have mostly empty strip malls and chain restaurants. This is called progress in a corrupt and failing society.

    SxS's seem to be the biggest contributing factor. They draw a certain type of crowd that ends up being far more destructive than dirtbikes and ATVs are/were. Michigan is facing the same issues - and they've floated the idea of having speed limits on the trails because of how dangerous the SxS's have become for everybody... Which of course screws dirtbikes, whom can safely operate at higher speeds.

Then they ignore the closed area signs and still no one reports them. Until you fight them, you are part of the problem. Why won't you fight the idiots that ruin your riding areas? • @briangc1972
    @briangc1972 11 месяцев назад +8

    The reason for the closures is that too many riders do not stay on the trails. I organized a group ride there a few years ago. More than 1/3 of the guys immediately broke the rules and road parallel to the trails instead of on the trails. We stopped and repeatedly told them why they needed to stay on the trails, yet they continued to tear up the natural landscape. The next day, they got caught and were ticketed. We told them that they were to never join our group rides again. Too many groups do not police their riders. As a result, more trails will be shut down. Better to shut the trails for a couple years and open them after nature has a chance to recover. If you want to stop closures, then start reporting the people who break the rules. If you don't report them, then don't cry when the trail is closed.

      @@PNWEnduro the issue with SXS tends to be an attitude thing, last time I was riding MTB in Moab I used some shared trails to go Portal and you can notice the difference across user types. Jeeps and Moto no issues, SXS had some weird encounters. As with everything, this isn't a blanket statement, but the boom in popularity without a growth in education puts the rest of OHV users in a bad place. The place I ride Moto the most nowadays is private land with membership, they had to remove access to SXS because of the above concerns.

    Im not 100% sure as to why at l they decided this. But I'm assuming, as i grew up there, these trails have been totally abused. The land and sand itself take years to form and have been ruined. Graffiti on petroglyphs. The amount of money it costs for locals to survive there is ridiculous. I was 16 and it was a magical place for sure, we learned how to survive the year without tourism and saved during the crazy spring months that brought in enough revenue for the year. I'm 37 now and going back is a trip.. its not the same, it's always busy, sure, that's a good thing in same cases. But watching my friends and family who stayed to raise their families there, have to work 2, sometimes 3 jobs just to keep a roof over their heads is the saddest thing ever. Rent in Moab, is relative to what i pay to live in Seattle WA. It makes no sense. But the real locals (not the transplant locals) will know exactly how to work with less tourism and less revenue. If it creates a beautiful place for them again and more reasonable price for living, I'm sure they'll love it that way!

Since my first visit, the use of the area exploded and tourism grew and the community got swallowed up by VRBO and ABNB, making affordable living in Moab impossible for the locals. Too much of a good thing.... Fear not, there are a ton of other riding areas that are far better than Moab...Nearby Grand Junction Colorado has way better riding, and the Kanab area and Lake Powell have access to huge areas of riding. Sucks to see some of Moab get shut down but it had grown out of control. Also, I'll never understand some of my fellow riders fascination with riding the same places over, over, over and over. There are plenty of people that would go there and spend money that stay away now because of the rat race it’s become. The locals I talk to that know what it was like before would like their quiet little town back.

      Maybe visitors to the area should post their own zipcodes so people can go there and tear up the streets, and damage public spaces too. That'll show 'em! A boycott will only hurt people who are doing all they can to pay the bills. Not a good idea.

    I am looking forward to floating Labyrinth canyon and hiking in and out of 10 mile canyon without having to listen the noise pollution from these machines. You are only losing a small percentage of trails and this is going to help native plants recover and preserve more areas for wilderness. I think it is a great decision to close it as you still have over 700 miles where you can use your machines on in that area.
    And you can get off the machines and still hike these trails. The access is still there just more balanced now.
    I think it is a good compromise. Instead of blocking all machines they identified duplicate trails and sensitive areas along the river and drainage that will benefit from less human impact. As federal land I think this a better balance for visitors and the land itself.
    What is your reasoning for these ohv trails to stay as ohv trails? What would be your vision for now, 10 years, 50 and 100 years from now?

    • @PNWEnduro
      @PNWEnduro  11 месяцев назад +2

      I can respect your reasoning for agreeing with the closures even though I disagree. I don’t think motorized use has a large effect on sand and rock.
      The reasons for closure may have more to do with the interest of lithium mining than preserving nature which will be far far more invasive than orv’s riding In the desert.
      Closer to my home some user groups want motorized access to trails restricted but they don’t realize without us clearing those trails in the mountains every spring they would not be passable for anyone.

    • @chickenfur
      @chickenfur 11 месяцев назад +2

      @@PNWEnduro Thanks for replying. I appreciate and respect your views as well. Nice to agree to disagree amicably on the internet :)
      Lithium mining along Labyrinth canyon would not be good, having trucks going in and out of that would certainly destroy the wilderness feel.
      I wonder if we could get the BLM to designate some of these new walk in only areas as wilderness so there won't be a danger of lithium mining there in the future.
      They did recently change the west side of Labyrinth canyon to wilderness so that is protected, I wonder else what could be done to extend that protection to the eastern side of Labyrinth canyon as well and balance the 700 miles of motorized trails there.

      @@chickenfur We're all very much aware that we can "get off the machines and still hike the trails". Believe it or not, many of us ALSO hike, kayak, mountain bike, etc... Also, you consider 30% a small percentage? WOW... Go throw 30% of your paycheck in the garbage then.
      You do realize that hikers can not only use OHV trails, but that they also have access to a ---FAR--- greater number of trails where that is the only form of recreational land use that is allowed, right? The percentage lost here is far greater to the OHV community than it is a gain to the hiking/"low impact" community. And you want to talk about "balance"?
      I'm also tired of hearing the "noise pollution" argument. You do realize that you're welcome to use any one of your numerous alternatives to get away from OHVs, correct? Are you aware of the concept of "sharing" on a multi-use trail? I'm actually completely fine with the fact that I already have to drive at least an hour to get to any OHV spots, but the audacity to complain about noise in the relatively few multi-use areas to the tune of actually getting them shut down? Go pack sand.
      Here's some SUWA logic: Let's gradually and drastically reduce the area in which OHVs can be used to the point that the only areas they're still allowed will become so blatantly OVERUSED that we can then move in and close THOSE areas too! Maybe in 10, 50, or 100 years they won't even be manufactured anymore because there's nowhere to even USE them! YAY! "Balance" has been achieved!

      NOT EVERYONE CAN HIKE ..I Have medical reasons I can't enjoy many areas..but being able to use off-road vehicles allows many of us usage of those areas..shutting them down isn't fair for me and many others ...your whole point is quite selfish..you have the most access and territories you can use on a daily basis . that many can never see .. you should learn to share no body should be told they can't use it ..

      You as a hiker have 1000x more trails and rivers to explore that don't allow dirt bikes and you want to support closing down more of our spots so you can enjoy it without having to listen to other people have fun? Sounds a little selfish to me, but i mean 90% of the human population thinks theyre the center of the universe. What if we decided to support turning your places into dirt bike tracks?
