Its rough actually fully developing my tech at first, but I also got a bit lazy as soon as I got my first walls of ballista up

There is a lighter greenish path in the fog that gives away the path from death crystal to the keep

and they added a tower that will reveal the path after the crystal has gone active! Really helpful
