    The cycle:
1: Passionate, talented game devs start a company and make a great game
2: They seek funding from a publisher to make a bigger game
3: Publisher dont care about games only money, top devs leave
4: Next few games are bad but publisher cruises on gullible punters trusting name of studio
5: Publisher shuts down or renames studio

I don't actually think Chimera Squad was a bad game in idea, it just wasn't executed as well as it could have been. I didn't really like the art and character direction, but I really liked the gameplay. If we got XCOM 2s character customization, Geoscape, art style, and its level of story involvement, and tossed in Chimera Squad's unique turn-based mechanics and use of aliens, I think we could actually get a good game. I know that wasn't the main focus of the video, but I felt like I had to say it.

    @alexpage4355 Год назад +33

Alternate take: Jake and Garth poured every ounce of inspiration they had to get the XCOM franchise this far, and there's only so much further they can carry the ball, themselves. There's a reason we've _never_ had the same lead designer for two Civ games. The closest we ever got was Brian Reynolds, who took the reins on Civ 2... then did it again for Alpha Centauri, one of the first games Firaxis ever made, and even then they were _very_ different games.
Could this be a sign of trouble at the company? Possibly... but it could also be a sign of two guys who have given everything they have to a franchise and just want to move on to something else, following in the shoes of Soren Johnson and Jon Shafer, moving on to pursue other passion projects so other folks with newer, fresher ideas can take the franchise to places they couldn't. (People have been begging for an updated take on TFTD, and Solomon has said repeatedly that _he_ would never do it; so it would make sense that if the team wants to pursue that angle, as seems likely given the ending of WotC, someone else would need to take over.)
It's kind of amazing they managed to keep going as long as they have. It wouldn't be surprising at all to discover they feel they just don't have anything left to add to the series, having already given it everything they had. Since it's Firaxis's second-biggest franchise, of _course_ it's going to keep going. So, their options are: continue coasting on autopilot, making the exact same game over and over with diminishing returns.... or step aside so someone with new ideas can take a crack at it. If they stay at Firaxis, they're going to _have_ to do the former, an as creative types, they almost certainly have other ideas they'd rather pursue.
As for XCOM 3 being more like Chimera Squad, I wouldn't worry too much about that. It was _clearly_ experimental, trying out new things, like the breach mechanics, to see how they'd work, while borrowing some elements from other adjacent franchises, like the personality-driven mercs from the Jagged Alliance series. The response has been quiet clear. And I say that as a fan of the Jagged Alliance games (at least while Sir-Tech was still around), who absolutely believes there's room for a spin-off series (NOT a mainline entry) with a massive pool of prefabricated troopers with set personalities (a pool large enough to accommodate permadeath, since there's less danger of running out of potential replacements unless things go incredibly sideways), but after the intense backlash from all the people who want to customize their soldiers, there's no way that's ever happening.

    @DragonxFlutter 6 месяцев назад +1

I haven't played Chimera Squad as much as EW or WotC, but here's what I thought of it. After that I have ideas for XCOM 3 that could be used (or used for an XCOM spiritual successor if the next Firaxis entry sucks). Also, I'll be referring to CS's predecessors by their expansion titles and including all DLC under that; so when I say EW (Enemy Within), I'm talking about the base game (Enemy Unknown), the expansion (Enemy Within), and the DLC story (XCOM EU - Slingshot); and when I say WotC (War of the Chosen), I'm referring to the base game (XCOM 2), the expansion (WotC), and the two DLC stories (Shen's Last Gift & Alien Hunters). Cosmetic packs don't have story, and so are not counted.
    On XCOM: CS
For a game that was intentionally made as a smaller experience to be a stop-gap between major titles, it was fine. It had some great ideas, too, even if they weren't well executed; which I learned the hard way. In no particular order:
Idea 1. The setting is GREAT. In the wake of the defeat of the Elders, many of their units have been disconnected from their psychic influence and left behind on Earth. With nowhere to go and no support for their unstable genetic modifications, the aliens integrate into Earth society; and some of the species left behind, like the Sectoids and Vipers, even get genetic therapy to stabilize them after the Elders messed them up. As a result, a SWAT-style law enforcement agency made of both humans and aliens that specifically focuses on crimes committed by aliens and super humans (because of course all the Psychics XCOM made were gonna be a problem) comes into existence. However, from what I played, they don't go too deep into the ramifications of xeno integration with humans, how far they can go in society, the potential mistrust of former Advent soldiers living and working among the people they helped to oppress not too long ago. Most of that is glossed over for the sake of the main plot, which is a police detective story of said Super SWAT hunting down criminal organizations on a time limit (because of course there's a time limit).
Idea 2. Since the game revolves around a specific team of a specific size, every character you obtain is a unique character and not some faceless grunt that you only grow attached to after investing time and resources into them. They're all voice acted, they all have unique abilities, they have unique interactions between characters, _AND_ some of them have unique interactions with the various enemy factions in the game (the Sectoid on the front of the box interacts with the Psychic criminals in scripted dialogue)! The problem here is that you'll rarely if ever unlock the full roster in a single game, so most of that work on character development is wasted.
Idea 3. Because you're essentially playing a SWAT team, you don't have just one enemy to watch out for. There are instead four different crime factions, each with their own unique strengths and weaknesses, requiring you to strategize about who you're bringing into battle to best counter the enemy. The downside is that you only fight one at a time, each faction you don't go after becomes significantly stronger the more you ignore them, the leveling system is exactly the same as EW and WotC which can result in you having a lop-sided squad, and since you can permanently lose your officers that means you can permanently lose the units that counter the next faction you're gonna fight while you're just trying to get them levels. A squad-wipe in Chimera Squad can essentially mean a game over, because you'll have to play that same mission on that same difficulty with weaker units that don't match up well against who you were fighting.
Idea 4. This one is mostly up to individual taste. The battle system is still turn-based, but it has kind of a D&D style initiative system; meaning individual character actions are mixed. You could use two of your units, and bad RNG can make the enemy use the entire current pod before the rest of your units get to go. Thankfully, as a result of this, you only move one area at a time and only ever face one pod at a time; so it's at least forgiving. You can chose where you want to deploy your units on the map, and can synchronize entire maneuvers for the whole squad to do as you enter the arena (like actual SWAT teams do, which is cool!), but this can leave them alone and vulnerable very quickly if you're not careful and observant.
Idea 5. Each officer in the Chimera Squad is a unique class that is not duplicated throughout the rest of the game. Unlike EW and WotC, you cannot make two soldiers of the same base class but spec'd into different skill sets. You have one unit per class, so you better make it count.
On what I'd put into XCOM 3
Of all the ideas presented throughout the three titles (EW, WotC, CS), I think I'd do this.
I'd try and bring back the ideas of Genetic Manipulation and Cybernetic Augmentation from EW, but have them be equivalents and have it be more subtle instead of overt. Example: you can either genetically modify or cybernetically enhance a Sniper's eyes, but the trade off is that the Genetic route grants buffs to Squad Sight and the Cyborg route benefits more from Holo-Targeting.
I'd keep the idea of the SPARKs (war robots), but I'd change them to not feel so much like a combo of Grenadier and Specialist. Maybe they'd instead be XCOM's version of a Sectopod; able to stand tall to see farther for Squad Sight, or have them turned into a semi-autonomous vehicle that can grant buffs to soldiers riding it and act as emergency cover when needed.
I'd for sure keep the idea of liberated Aliens joining the fight against the Elders.
Instead of recruiting Rookies, I'd skip that step and go straight to recruiting a specific unit type, and each class can have the chance of being either a human or a specific allied alien race.
I'd combine the EW Heavies with the WotC Grenadiers to make a "Demolitions" unit that could specialize in either path (grenades or rockets), and change grenades and rockets themselves to have different strengths (grenades are better anti-infantry, rockets are better anti-vehicle).
I'd make psychic units available from the start, like the Templars in WotC. XCOM has discovered and re-discovered psychic powers twice already. It's time they were available from the start.
I'd keep the _idea_ of the Alien Rulers and the Chosen (special super units and unique Generals that can be recurring enemies), but I'd polish them up a bit. Maybe the Alien Rulers aren't _unique_ but instead special bosses that appear during certain alerts or Dark Events. Instead of three Chosen with randomized stats, there's one "dark reflection" for each XCOM class, each with their own specific pool of buffs and weaknesses to pull from instead of a united pool. So while you can learn which "Alien General" has which pool, you can't anticipate what they spawn with and what they learn via level-up.
And here's a big one that could have been in EW and should most definitely be in 3, if XCOM 3 even happens: I'd make the ability to send multiple squads out to combat engagements at the same time. I understand why that's not a thing in WotC, but it should have been a thing in EW, and it should be a thing going forward. The ability to have multiple squads en route to multiple engagements at once could open up many possibilities; both for player strategy and the usual XCOM effery. I might keep the idea of Covert Ops as well, but it might have to be reworked to fit with multiple combat teams.

I agree with Chimera... but remember it was a B-team proyect more than a sequel ... well! in part. It feels more like an interquel between Xcom 2 and will probably been Xcom 3.
But here is where the hopes dies because Mindnight Suns was announced and i was like: "OH NO!! oh f no!! this will kill Firaxis" ... fully known of what Disney is been running Marvel on the mud.
And also i do believe Jake was given the boot ... because he was working on Xcom 3 during the launch of Chimera Squad. But those 2 years of silence make me wonder if something happen behind the scenes and Midnight Suns confirmed my fears. Remember how a lot of developers were sacked out of companies like Blizzard or Bethesda despite they been working on other games already, and they coincide with the launch of a not successful game? WELL! here is your answer. That on top of 2K been a bunch of a-holes as well behind the scene.

Oh come on, it will be hard to make a game that is less optimised than XCOM 2.. xd its an amazing game, but one that melts PCs
As for XCOM 3, I think with proper resources the writers of CS could make something good. With CS we saw a rather major shift from Firaxis/Jake's strategy of being as ambigious with writing as possible to actually giving some concrete data - and that will be needed for XCOM 3. XCOM 1 and 2 both benefitted (in my opinion) from XCOM having imperfect information about the state of the world and enemy capability. Hence autopsy reports on aliens reveal nothing important regarding their biology, culture etc. Pretty much the same with tech reports. This worked in X2, as the player could fill the blanks with their own headcanon and go with it... however in X3 they will need to showcase the world 10 / 15 / 20 years after the War for Liberation and how it has developed.
That requires major worldbuilding. No longer will making a few general statements and standardised alien stuff work, and because X2 relied on headcanon for its world integrity, adding that detail in X3 will piss off a lot of people as their headcanons will be crushed. In a way we already saw that with CS, which made a lot of lore mistakes (new alien appearances, unnamed cities, 5 finger vipers, BS with violet giving psi powers to everyone)
As much as Jake made xcom what it is, they never quite had to focus so much on worldbuilding, on the other hand, I would say the best thing about CS is how with limited resources they managed to do so much of it (even if quality was lacking). Project leads are one thing, and writers are another, and I think Firaxis still has a few good ones who worked on X1 and 2 and are huge fans of the series.

Chimera squad is stupid, I don't want to work with aliens, I want to expel them. The art style was offputting (and I already don't especially care for xcom2 art style but not likely to see a return to the 90's comic style), and the whole concept just seemed wrong, why mess with the formula...? people like to build a base, get upgrades, fight for survival and see progression over a relatively long period and they like the dynamics that can occur over that long period, this is the opposite of that, people LIKE xcom because the controlled unpredictability. Cards are just complete unpredictability and just lame.
Then this game, it actually sounded good as an idea, I don't really care about superheroes much as an adult but I saw a lot of my favorite characters from my childhood including the overlooked ones like Blade, I thought, X-Com... but with superheroes, why not? After all, by the end of XCom your characters are practically superheroes and I could see Wolverine doing bladestorm. And i've got a soft spot for various anti-heros in the universes. Then I see the gameplay and they've removed tile based movement and cover from the battle system, and implemented a card game system (instant barf) and it was nothing like x-com at all... what the fuck were they thinking? It's just this weird card game that will definitely not appeal to the modern superhero film target audience that, let's face it, just wanna see stuff flying around on screen and hear lame jokes. Why would they opt to play Midnight Suns over Spider-Man? For card game crap? Then I hear it's got dating sim garbage, like who cares about that shit!? Why!?
It's pretty sad, I remember watching many XCOM 2 promo streams with Jake Solomon in anticipation for the release and eager to learn anything and to be honest, XCOM 2 was pretty rough and I was a bit disappointed compared to EW but his enthusiasm was strong and I believed he'd make it into a good game and I think with WOTC they did make it a very good game.

I think Xcom 3 would suck no matter what... but not because of this.
Remember the plot thread at the end of Xcom 1? Xcom 2 was a soft reboot which normally isn't a good thing.
I like Xcom 2 but it really sucks that the plot of Xcom 1 could ultimately be ignored.
Xcom 3 has to abandon or ignore the multiple races or give an excuse like the new enemy can mind control them all.
It is gaslighting the player when it keeps resetting the plot just like in Kingdom Hearts.
Kairi gets kidnapped, Kairi is tied to the main plot, Kairi meets Sora at end of game, she gets separated from Sora for X reason.
Xcom did the same thing... and Xcom 3 is in a poisition where it is likely going to do the same.
I also believe Xcom 3 will force that stamina system on day 1, which will lead to a lot of people waiting to buy the game unless there is an toggle for it. People will wait for mods, the MTX will be something that has to deny mods, and either result drives people away.
Xcom is comparable to Kingdom Hearts, with the wacky spin off being Chimera Squad.
Which also makes Xcom 3 a nightmare since they won't cover the basics just like KH3 failed to (I've been through all the games)

  • @jacobely6826
    @jacobely6826 10 месяцев назад

i dont fully agree tbh, i agree that midnight suns was a colossal fuck up, i dont think the game itself is completely awful however, it was just missing that "something special" that firaxis often has, and i cant fully put my finger on it.
as for chimera squad, well i'd have to almost entirely disagree, i didnt like the writing, and the gameplay was not xcom 2, but it wasnt worse in quality, it was simply just different. i enjoyed chimera squads gameplay for different reasons as to why i enjoyed xcom 2's gameplay, it was clearly a more arcadey take on the xcom formula and IMHO clearly just a different spin on xcom, i do not think its indicative of the future of xcom.
there also still some very talented developers at firaxis, its clear to me, even though chimera squad didnt quite speak to me the same way previous xcoms did, that there was incredible talent behind that game, especially when you consider the price point and clearly the quick timeline they were working on, give that same team a lot more time and a mainline xcom focus? i think they could definitely achieve some fantastic things.
ofcourse there's also the chance that they will completely muck it up and firaxis will go down the toilet. because one thing is certain, i dont think firaxis could properly survive in its current state if they make xcom 3 and it flops.
personally i think there are 3 possibilities.
Xcom 3 comes out, its not up to scratch firaxis is pretty doomed.
Xcom 3 comes out, and its actually pretty damn good and manages to be interesting and fun simply iterating on the previous 2 mainline titles the same way that xcom 2 iterated on EU and all is well with the world.
Xcom 3 never gets made... this is truly the darkest timeline IMHO, i'd rather a disappointing xcom 3 than no xcom 3 so i can at least have some form of closure on this series that i fell in love with... but its certainly a possibility that firaxis will decide that they cannot risk fumbling xcom 3 and instead decide ot focus their efforts on new ip's and civ.
personally i think firaxis still has the ability to make xcom 3 great, as i say there are still clearly some incredibly talented developers. my biggest worry for xcom 3 is the writing, as thats honestly the biggest problem i had with chimera squad, the mechanics themselves were not what i want out of a mainline xcom game, but its also not realistic to assume that they would be carried over as it would just not fit into the style of a mainline xcom game.
the writing however, was honestly just downright bad, im hoping thats simply because of the rushed timeline, as its pretty hard to make a compelling story under time pressure but honestly i can take bad writing, after all, ive put 1500 hours into xcom 2 and ive never actually bothered to do the last mission, as i just dont care enough about actually doing the story, for me its just about advancing up the tech tree and wiping out xeno scum. my love for xcom is in its mechanics and its world building and i think chimera squad showed that the devs were talented in those 2 areas, even if the game didnt hold the same style of mechanics and world building as xcom 2.
but at the end of the day xcom 2 is incredibly malleable, mods make it pretty much endlessly replayable for me so at the end of the day any result is fine, i could play xcom 2 over and over and over again and i plan to continue doing so for thousands of hours yet... hopefully i can change over to xcom 3 at some point in the future, but well, im not gonna cry about it if i cant.

Sorry I think its a good game compared to oversaturated 1st and 3rd person game that are all the same mechanic

This is devastating news. Xcom 3 is going to suck unless they beg them to come back. Sadly, it seldom works this way.

Nope. They're going to promote some DEI hires from within that don't have the talent or the vision of Jake and it's going to be a massive turd.

Gotta disagree, I've been having a blast with Midnight Suns, probably one of the best games I've played in the past few years. XCOM 2 was great but Midnight Suns easily tops it for me.

Chimera Squad release was a total surprise to me an I snapped it up without any thought and it was..... not great, I didnt even finish it :/
I heard a lot about Midnight Suns card gameplay being good, but mission/enemy variety being and story being poor, I didnt buy it as I am sick of Marvel.
Civ 7 team is hopefully untouched by disaster, I've been playing those games since the beggining

you know maybe if this launched at the same time as endgame or just before it, it might have done so much better
In addition to it not being a good game, no one really cares all that much about Marvel anymore
