an ex coworker turned me onto Metric with this song while i was working at a pita shop in college in 2005. I liked it - and therefore i liked her - now she's an ex gf. In 2006 she brought me to see Metric at Webster Hall in Brooklyn, and when they played this the crowd was thrilled - highlight of the show.
There must be a way to gradually introduce the idea that this is one of this crummy earth's best songs. Absolutely worth sorting high on you tube...you know who you are....
a friend just recommended this album. he saw them in la in the early 00's at a small venue, only about 15 people in attendance, and at the end of the show they completely destroyed their instruments. It turned out they had just been signed for this record deal. kinda cool story from an interesting moment in their careers.
I truly never expected to love metric but goddamn I do. I somehow had help I'm alive stuck in my head for years and then I eventually found it and better than I remembered but I wasn't a fan just yet but as I just let the music play I've become a fan of their old and new stuff. They're good.
Woah 3 years later I'm replying to this. Look up Tilly and Wall - Nights of the Living Dead and Hot Hot Heat - Bandages and I may think of some mid 2000s favorites for you to enjoy
+John Smiff As someone who has been personally influenced by both women massively in my life...I'm still with Taylor on this. Emily's lyrics are generally concise and to the point, she's telling a story with the music. There's a lot of very clever shit she does with her lyrics. Jenny's lyrics are awesome too, but there's more of a pretense there.
This spring I tried to move out into the woods to get away from certain things I didn't know how to deal with. I didn't end up moving into the woods, but I spent a lot of time in nature rediscovering my passions and Metric's and Mother Mother's music kindled a flame in me, giving me a lot of warmth and hope that this is the kind of music I want to do, the energy I want to have in my life. This song was my fight song.
thank you for writing this, man. i've been thinking a lot of stuff through, and this put some things into perspective. i adore mother mother and metric both, so it's kind of surreal to see someone else who this music has helped. hope you're doin well!
DevotionToChaos i do, actually! none of its super good, but i have an instagram. @burnt.lasagna33, if you'd ever want to follow. you're right, life is wild lol
+Kyle Dorr The amount of ignorance about music and music production in this comment section is absolutely mind boggling. *_First off_*, I guarantee you this was recorded on some computer software, compressed HEAVILY especially the drums and voice + the reverb and delay. eq'ed on it, mixed and then mastered. Its also possible there is slight auto tune on the double tracks. (News Flash: Auto Tune is not some T-Pain shit, most artists use it) *_Second_*, there is no psyche reason the top songs sell so well. In fact not even the record labels out today know what the fuck to do or what to find, they have no idea what sells a song. The music industry is a bit messy right now, so up and coming artists aren't sure how to make it because the record labels don't even know what they're looking for. *_Third_*, most big artists you know of and cherish weren't big and didn't get worldwide recognition immediately. Especially the foreign artists. Its much harder to make it big in the US if your Australian or UK, and people like the Beatles and Pink Floyd weren't GIGANTIC until they made deals with US record labels. Some even go unnoticed for years. The Velvet Underground weren't mainstream till nearly the early 80s. 20 years after Velvet Underground and Nico was released. And sold like 20 copies?
@@melomania2637 If you watch the live performance of this song it's pretty spot on. Her vocals aren't as good because she had did like 10 songs before this one. And yeah hip hop led to the destruction of music. It lowered the bar for what we consider art.
My dad always used to listened to this song a lot. Thank god my friend showed me this. I'm starting to forgot his songs now i can can stop hurting but i am fine.
This brings me back to 2006, being 17 and drunk for the first time, riding in the backseat of my friend's car. while this song plays on her iPod. Face pressed against the cold window, trying not to puke while I listen to her and our DD talk about craving blueberry fritters at 2 a.m. Simpler times.
Awww thats a great memory. I also started listening around that time, but it was my internet friend who introduced me and they've been my fav ever since. Im about to meet them on Friday and I'm so nervous!
Its kind of awesome, its almost like a double entendre; combat baby as in fight me in a passive aggressive manner of fight for my love......but then it actually sounds like comeback baby as in don't leave me. Its kind of that subtle yet continuous strain in some relationships, where you do everything to fight for the love of the other then at the same you take that love and use it as a weapon to push them away as vehemently as possible......?!....Who knows? Maybe, I drank to many beers and this is what I get for listening to this stuff???
Nathan Edwards Idk, i feel like its about a relationship where they fight constantly, but she misses it anyway. 'No one here wants to fight me like you do' thus the combat baby/come back baby play on words, its like it goes hand in hand. Idk. Seems like one of those situations where you're unhappy 'i miss your ranting, do you miss my all time lows?' But once you're out of it you realize there were good parts you miss? Its the paradox of people lol i guess.
Metric's lyrics just ooze multiple intended interpretations and plays on perspective, yet I feel like no one else hears it. So thank you for reassuring me I'm not alone here haha
Here is my interpretation of the song (if you care for it): I think this song is about being "addicted to bad relationships". sometimes when were in a relationship with someone who isn't right for us we could become too comfortable in that toxic relationship and when we finally get the sense to say "this isn't working" we want to go back, because as terrible as the relationship was it's more familiar then just being alone and trying to get yourself back together, "non of them want to fight me like you do" i feel like that line is supposed to basically tell us what the everyday dating life of someone who just got out of a relationship like that are like, they try to look for someone new but the future is scary, and when the only familiar thing about your past is toxicity than your going to go for familiar toxicity instead of unfamiliar future, even if you know it's bad for you, even if you know that your previous partner's only skills were to know how to "fight" you you'd prefer going back to something familiar. I dunno that's just my interpretation
I came across the music video for this on a quicktime sharing site. the only thing on there was this guy's half dozen music videos in a list of hyperlinks. Got introduced to this and Evil by Interpol, big thanks to whoever that guy was
mabe there is a more popular version of this song somewhere else on youtube? idk this is IMO the best metric album. to bad you can't go to a store and buy it :( .
Dorthea Naatjes the end of the chorus she says that and near the end of the song she says that :) just before “how I miss your rantings, do you miss my all-time lows?”
The chorus of this song "combat baby, come back baby, fight off the lethargy, don't go quietly, combat baby, said you you would never give up easily, combat baby come back" it's really nice...
I"m the best singer. I probably sing this infront of millions of people if I wanted to. I can even nearly play an electric guitar while dressed up in super cool rock star clothes.
Okay, not to be homestuck on main but, this song is literally the perfect song for kismesstitude, hear me out, it's clear that a lot of the relationship displayed in the song involves a sort of mutually beneficial "fighting" given that one of the lines is basically "no one want to fight me like you do" and it's not appearing to be in unhealthy amount of fighting or something that would be bad in the long run given that it's clear she misses the relationship, I have a lot of feelings about this and I will be glad to ramble further if given the chance
I am tired of people. Don't really like them. Hmmm. And yet, I want to play gigs like this hotness and be with my pals that I don't have. How does this all come together? Just leave me alone. Come let's party and shit. But no.
"How I miss your ranting. Do you miss my all-time lows?"
So relatable.
While listening to this, I can't help but feel that...I...am the combat baby
same!!! I totally imagine Emily singing this to me directly
We're all combat babies. No one is perfect.
ah yes, ze combat baby
Pretty sure the song isn't about a combatative infant
Haha😂😂😂
I remember dancing at the mod club in Toronto to this song during university. Still an awesome song!!
Can't believe this song is 20 years old. This was the song that made me fall in love with metric.
Old but Gold, this álbum, we not kkkkk
I remember my mom playing this song in the car when I was about 7 (i'm 14 now) and this was my favorite. so glad I found it.

gettin that sweet sweet serotonin from the nostalgia of jamming to this with my dad when he'd drive me to school when I was 6
Something about this song harkens back to my childhood in the early 2000s. Just something about it
I just recently found this song and must say I am in love with this genre of old music. I'm definitely in love with this song for some reason too.

God, this is such a good song. Why is it so unpopular?
+Brakmek11823 Because only the bad songs get popularity these days.
