  • We set out to diagnose and fix the wonderful case of death wobble our Grand Cherokee has developed. After some backstory about how death wobble has affected us, we'll replace the track bar, tie rod, and drag link.
A full write-up, including specifications of each phase of our project, can be found on our newly refreshed website (will be updated soon): azoffroad.net/zj-project/

I'm glad I found your channel and website. Great stuff. Inspiring. I bought a 98 ZJ for my son a year ago and he promptly go bit by the Jeep bug. So, long story short we have been having a great time working on it together and going to Jeep meetups. 3.5 inch lift, adjustable control arms, 33s, with more stuff to come. I just installed a compressor and started acquiring air tools. BTW- that is an air chisel and pickle fork.

I wish I had a dollar for every blog post and RUclips video that has a "fix" for the dreaded and ubiquitous "death wobble". Each supposed fix is different, which tells you it is just a crap-shoot. Basically, replace the entire steering and suspension system, all bushings, ball joints, etc.

If the death wobble rears its ugly head again, check your upper and lower ball joints along with your front wheel bearings. When my son purchased his used ZJ we went and replaced all of the front end components including the ball joints and wheel bearings. This way he shouldn't see death wobble for many years to come and he could have the piece of mind knowing that everything was done right on his new to him Jeep.

Damon Strehlau I was scanning the comments to see if anyone mentioned the upper and lower ball joints. Now I don’t have to mention it.

Glad you have it fixed. That video really makes you appreciate what death wobble looks like! I have seen it waaaayyyy worse on a vehicle, but ANY is too much! Nice "how-to" once again!

Another factor in the death wobble is wider offset rims.

Just installed a 4.5" lift. New control arms, new bilstein shocks, new sway bar disco's. Drove it and had crazy death wobble. Just checked tie rod ends and they are all shot. So ordered all new ones from rock auto ($150). I'm hoping that fixes the DW...

You kept referring to the tie rod ends as ball joints(while they are a type of ball joint) the actual ball joints are at the top and bottom of the spindle and should be checked for play as they can cause DW, also check control arms

Don't forget to check upper and lower control arm bushings, I took mine out and chunks fell off once I git the bolts out.

I had an XJ with DW. After rebuilding everything it had greatly improved but had not completely gone away. Turns out the y tie rod was creating enough toe in and out when I hit a bump just right with the RF to start an oscillation. After switching to a one piece tie rod the problem finally went away and stayed away. In case anyone goes thorough all this trouble and still has an issue. The y tie rod is kind of a stupid design and one might consider just replacing it from the get go if you are rebuilding the entire front end.

I just upgraded my ZJ to IRO OTK steering and it is beefy. I bent my stock steering, I don't think I will be able to bend that system.
