    I like that the cards from each set as well as abilities actually tell the story of something about that digimon and its season. Like their mechanics work like their attacks or something they did in the story. Like how the original omnimon deleted digimon with the same name (this specifically targeted diaboramon just like his all out assault in the our war game movie). Or how ulforce is one of the 'fastest' royal knights so his tempo is really fast.

      @Shin5214 Год назад +1

      To give credit bandai did a really good job for digimon card game. They did get some power level of archetype wrong but if you notice closely alot of the current top decks don't start out as a top deck upon release. Bandai tend to spread out the support over multiple consecutive set until it peak. Good example is shinegreymon that got new support in bt12, EX04 then finally bt13 where it reached its final form. Same thing with gaogamon, it got introduce in bt11 and reached it final form during bt13. Or bloomlord which seems to get new toy every single set. I think if u join into a deck when it's at its peak power level it can feel abit too fast but for casual player that stay with a deck on release they actually get to enjoy the deck for pretty long and can enjoy the deck as it get stronger over time.

      @@Shin5214 coming from the BatSpi side of Bandai Tcgs, they have it way worse there, they usually introuduce a new group of races/types that're common for each color, and make it the main focus of one block, only to have them shafted instantly by the next block, with little or no support unless the newer stuffs are generic goodstuffs that somewhat work with the deck, or straight up eratta-ing the old cards, but treating the new erattas as new cards so you can't use your old cards

    Looking at Bandai's market in JP they run 8+ CCGs at the same time and have dedicated resources for everything. I know there's a lot of overlap between people picking up various bandai games, but for me I was never a fan of the other IPs they have so its all in on BSS for me personally. With DBS getting a dedicated digital client there's a lot of promise ahead for bandai games in general!

      powercreep hasn't been too bad. The bt9 set is still the most relevant set right now since x-antibody decks are so damn good. Most of the original stuff aside from a few cards is fairly dead but they release new versions of digimon with better effects to counteract that. Still want coolboy to be limited to 1 or banned outright.

    What Alec is talking about the 11 minute mark has been my issue with digimon. Every set has totally shaken up the meta. Last time I played I borrowed a deck and really loved it, but it was about to rotate and be useless in a month. So there was no need to ever build it
    I just lost interest when all the decks I liked and built just sucked the next time a set came out.

  • @Commodore128
    @Commodore128 Год назад +2

    It's interesting to hear these perspectives. I've been collecting Digimon cards since the pre-release of 1.0, but I've never really been able to actually play the game so I've always wondered a little about how it's doing in regards to power creep and such. I figured there must be some at least just by reading the cards, but it's a shame to hear that they kinda bury past decks every time a new set comes out. But again, just by reading the cards and not necessarily playing them, I can tell that there's also major COMPLEXITY creep as well. There are a LOT of words on some of those cards, and they aren't always written in ways that are immediately intuitive. Maybe the issue is that, like Yugioh, as a 1V1 game it's inherently going to be very competitive, and they need to come up with a more casual format where lower-tier decks can shine in some way.

    • @apsamplifier
      @apsamplifier  Год назад +1

      I think the worst offenders of "complexity creep" are Digi Xross related cards. That mechanic requires so much explanation and the cards have to say so much so that they can be competitively viable

    It's really funny hearing Alec talk about Shinegreymon's journey, cuz it's S tier atm xD

  • @Pravanul
    @Pravanul Год назад

    I wouldn't say Bandai is trying to overhaul/powercreep the game every set. Each set is themed, and they try to create new effects that match that theme. It definitely has strong power creep, but many older cards end up fitting into new card types so it works out to an extent. But I think it's mostly for flavor and to keep the game interesting by creating theme-appropriate effects.
    Like, the hybrids got cross-evolution and recursive effects, as well as the ability to evolve onto tamers.
    Armor got armor purge, which fit Adventure 02 and how often their evolutions were "knocked off" when defeated (lol).
    Xros got the save mechanic, matching how the tamers would "collect" the digimon data (often of defeated digimon), and then fuse that onto their partner with the xros mechanic.
    D-reaper has the mother that acts as the central-brain that runs the deck and how it starts slow but rapidly expands into a swarm, much like the computer virus it is. Plus having null level really flavors it as a not-digimon.
    etc

  • @kranic796
    @kranic796 Год назад +1

    The main differences between the digimon tournaments are the prizes. Each tournament has their own unique set of prize card.
    Regionals are basically the main competitive tournament since they give regional invites.
    Ultimate cup is turning into a weird alt format tournament, which I think is kinda cool personally since people are still excited for it.
    DC-1 is a weird case since it isn't ran very often compared to regionals and ulti cup, so the prize cards are worth more.

    • @apsamplifier
      @apsamplifier  Год назад

      I still feel like Bandai should properly address the purpose of each type of tournament so that everyone can understand this.

    The powercreep is even worse if you have to get SEC cards for your deck just for them to be immediately unplayable next set.
    The game also is difficult to playtest by yourself because of the memory system, which also adds the financial risk whether or not that a SEC card or cards is even worth playing your deck.
    My advise is to look at the current performing decks if they are deck(s) that plays SEC as a necessary deck gameplan piece instead of a tech choice then wait for the next format. It will sort it self out.

  • @TheFluffiestZinogre

    I absolutely love Digimon, and the card game.. even if my bank hates it when I buy half a case.. and then still buy alt art singles (Eyeing those gold rare Mastemons). But one of the things I've disliked the most, is how heavy handed Bandai has been with the ban list. Our metas have been wildly different from that of Japan's as a result. A great example of this would be Sunrise Buster to 1 and Shoutmon x4 to 1, effectively making what was going to be a meta deck more of a meme or dream deck for the time.
    Then some of our delays have had sets released right after another, not even a month later making a set almost immediately irrelevant.
    Then there was the entirety of EX03 having all kinds of rules text errors. It had 24 cards that needed to be errata'd, which was almost 1/3 of the set.
    I really hope Bandai can get its ducks in a row, because I want this game to thrive and to have more places to play it (I'm in like a dead zone of crappy stores to play at. One that will outright ban you for discussing card prices, one that only cares about Pokemon and treats Digimon like a red headed step child, and another that gets the player count but can't be arsed to host tournaments properly in that they'll start them, but then never bother to let it run to its finale and essentially gives everyone one round before closing the shop.

    Yeah, "self-canalbization" is my biggest fear with Bandai's games currently, especially when they try to release Union Arena too.
    However it does seem like, at least for the Digimon side of things, they DO listen to feedback, like with the Rising Wind for western release. That does give me some hope that they are mindful.
    And the fact that they are in the process of making an online sim for Dragon Ball Super's card game, leads me to believe they are still trying to push the game. I dunno, maybe there is a chance still?
    Honestly, I know there is not really much the communities can do, but I wish some were a little bit more critical to Bandai. Some are WAY too defensive with their games and don't want to criticized Bandai for anything.

    So speaking from a purely personal standpoint if Digimon's new TCG is not approachable for me personally because it has no digital format on a app I can play casually or whatever. I hate to say it but Marvel Snap gets my buisiness purely because I can pick it up and put it down in my day to day and because it doesn't take but like 10$ from my very small MTG budget. To invest in Digimon would require a lot more than that for paper. ^^; Also like Flesh and Blood finding people to teach you about in in person and help you get resources is not that easy. Also a nail in it's coffin for me is I'm 35 XD I loved DIgimon but I haven't even touched an anime since Ghost Game casual analysis. I would probably love to play Veemon simply because he's my fave but like would that be enough to keep me in? Clan devotion is sort of a big thing for me. MTG got me back because I grew up with Merfolk and it introduced me to Ixalan's lore which was so like the place I work for it was astounding. I am Simic/Blue Fish player in MTG and always will be...even when I get cooked by 5k Money Piles and Insane Jank Blink Combo....or Hammer Time.

    When it comes to power creep i do think its true for TOP tier decks, but all the like second tier decks stay decent for much longer and if the type of good deck changes it could bring up some good stuff.
    You gave the example of shine in bt3 and then it was buried next set and def the set after. However something like imperial came out bt3 and it was playable alllllll the way through ex1 and then struggled against hybrids in bt7 but then in bt8 was a top deck through bt9 (still being playable in bt9).
    Meaning these archetypes can keep being okay and playable that also can get support down the line too. And given the archetype way of doing it nowadays a new core being released for a deck can bring to life some old cards that used to be buried (ulforce jacked up the price of bt3 rina, bwgx and nationals jacked up the price of promo blackwargreymon, bt9 grandis brought back to life promo grankuwagamon which was its own deck in bt4 and 5)
    I understand the power creep needed in earlier sets when its a new card game, i mean yugioh wasnt that different from what i could tell from your rare hunters videos where its only been like the most recent 2 or so videos that havent needed overhauls and basically only running new cards (im speaking mainly for monsters cause both digimon and yugioh the trap/spell/option cards that are strong rarely get power crept). Where now with digimon it doesnt feel to me like complete overhauls of the meta anymore generally speaking (bt11 meta sure has bwgX but thats mostly a bt9 deck with some new cards, and aside from that the only other completely new strategy is like ulforce. You have metalgaruruX, wargreyX, grandis, and bwg that are mostly bt9 decks, Xros heart which is mostly a bt10 deck, machinedramon which is mostly an ex1 deck thats been drip fed support this whole time, and bloomlord which is mostly an ex3 deck with alot from bt9 as well)
    Our actual next overhaul of the meta will be bt12 with red hybrid having a new core (but again basis of the deck was back in bt7), hunters being a new deck, beelzemon with the X anti line (again the basis being back in ex2), bloomlord again cause of quartzmon, and the big bad Wargreymon which is mostly only the new stuff being super boosted by the bwgX stuff

    Honestly a big thing In worried about is power creep/feature creep. Of course every game card or not has this and new mechanics are interesting but Digimon is power creeping pretty fast. I'm still kind of new but from what I've heard from other players until around BT10 the meta was really diverse and you could play just about whatever deck you wanted. I'm just worried about the longevity of the game. And I hope the problem isn't just solved with new bans every week.

    So I have to disagree with Alec on one thing. He said that Dragon Ball was dying when Digimon came out, that's not entirely true. So what I would say actually happened is people's attention and priorities were shifting. Locals were a lot harder to get out to, shops were not able to host tournaments there was a lot of online events etc etc. due to covid. Dragon Ball is still doing well and most people are looking at this game and games like One Piece and you'll often find a lot of the same players between the two, again priorities are shifting based on what they're liking. If a person who hasn't touched Dragon Ball is playing One Piece, well their friends might be doing both and they might end up liking dragon ball and vice versa. I've been playing Dragon Ball since set 5, and there's always the meme where people say "The game is dying" that's been said so many times. It never does and Bandai continues to produce and host large scale tournaments when it comes to things like Nationals or Worlds.

    I hate to say this but I only play Yugioh Magic and Pokemon. The big three have done the things to make their games established and if one of the two, usually Magic or Yugioh, start to falter there's another to fall back on. Other card games are just flashes in the pan and I've learned this over the years and I'd rather just not get into a game that will die in a few years. Better overall to stick with what I like. I've been enjoying Magic more recently but that has a lot to do with my friends and the locals I attend. I took a break with Tear format and extended that break due to zone lock turbo. the game just isn't fun right now. As a Dragonball Super Card Game player (another Bandai card game) I can certainly say that they tend to shoot themselves in the foot with events. I don't know if they have to pay for licensing any event or what, but it causes a lot of slow down in what's available. They seem to have wanted to spend their budget on expanding their available games (DBS, One Piece, Digimon, and Battle Spirits). Hopefully once revenue starts to increase by having all of these games simultaneously they can finally start actually competing with MTG, Pokemon, and Yu-Gi-Oh for in person events.

    One thing that I’m really happy with when it comes to Bandai card games as they apply to their anime property TCGs is that the effects and design of the cards feels like they’re paying respect to the series itself, and those cards not only synergize well, but they also feel somewhat accurate to a translation of powers and abilities in the anime/manga into card effects.

      Card game scenes seemingly only have room for maybe 3 different card games and muscle all others out. It's extremely difficult to bring a new/smaller cardgame to an area that's been take over by Magic/Yugioh/Pokemon

    Unnamed......DBS..... But a card game is a card game and depends on it's fan base and player base, and if it's overly confusing/complicated. I am happy though that card games are starting to have a big comeback.
    Ps: the only reason I ever collected the original Digimon TCG was cause their card artwork plus having Metal Etemon cause Etemon.

    If they only didn’t have a horrible release schedule. It made getting cards at a reasonable price impossible when the game was in its first year. One day I hope I can give it a shot again. But all that didn’t make it feel worth playing the game. (To me at least)

    As a Vanguard player that casually dabbles in the bandai games I feel like playing the games casually is hard due to how my personal locals is inconsistent with which games get spot lights.
    One month it was Digimon, then Super, then Onepiece then back to Digimon and now Battle Spirits seems like uts either going to take over or flop compared to the other Bandai games depending on who I ask.
    Of course I casually frequent about 3 stores so of course I'm to see variance (2 of the 3 don't even do vanguard which is the stores Ive seen the flip flopping the most.)
    But that's just as a casual player so maybe a more Bandai dedicated player or different local scenes have different outlook.

    I like the Digimon TCG as a game but even as someone that's not collecting the cards himself I'm shocked by the power creep of the game. It's not even 3 years old and already making cards unusable in a matter of months. This doesn't bode well for the future of the game.
    Magic is also a fun TCG to play but absolutely horrible to collect, it's insanely expensive has way too many products a year and honestly hasn't that much of a unique design as YGO has. It's also very weird from a deck building perspective. You rarely have archetypes and tend to focus more on playstyles or mechanics like [color] [aggro/midrange/control] making decks feel even less unique.
    Pokemon is another TCG that is fun to play and is okay to collect as long as it's for the sake of collecting as you have a decent variety in design. Buying new sets to play however is a pure nightmare because sets rotate out of legality every few years. The variety in card effects is also rather low making it a bit boring in the long run.

    Bandai’s biggest problem is supply. They print too little of games when they are popular to meet demand. You can’t buy One Piece product unless you want to sell a kidney. The meta is just finding the product. Finding a box of One Piece is literally equivalent to finding buried treasure, so in that sense Bandai has made the most immersive card game. 😂

    I would play digimon lot more and probably even start to enjoy the game if they took out the stupid mechanic that let's your opponent floodgate you for free every turn by leaving you on 1 memory and therefore unable to make any play without ending your own turn (yeah I'm sure theres ways around it, but of the 15 or so games I've ever played, at least 9 because my opponent kept putting me on 1 memory and then sitting there with a shit eating grin on their face, all of the same people were bitching about handtraps in yugioh, so I got a pretty good idea about the kind of people I was dealing with)

      The thing that I believe makes Digimon work as an anime TCG is that they build the abilities and traits of the Digimon and characters from the anime into the mechanics of the card game. Digivolution, DNA, Armor, DigiXross, Hybrids, they all work so well as card mechanics and really boosts the theme of the game. For me anyway, that's what makes me enjoy it more than One Piece or other anime TCGs
