    My favourite videos of yours are the ones where you just talk. Definitely my favourite source of ASMR on RUclips.

    Normally I can’t sit through a video like this, it is background noise or sleepy time ASMR but this was quite interesting and relaxing!

    I totally resonate with the point you made about japanese story telling. For example, in most Ghibli movies the plot has almost a blind trajectory. Propelled only by time itself and not actions. Idk if that makes since or is accurate.

    I think the stereotype of Japanese sincerity, directness, and naiveté, embedded within a strongly collectivist culture is based on a measure of truth. I really enjoyed your observations and analysis of Japan. Thank you so much for sharing them with us.

    The 90s was actually a time of immense recession after the economic bubble burst. Most of the nostalgia you might be experiencing is specifically from the 70s and 80s, the intense peak of economic affluence.
    I've lived here for 7 years and it's a phenomenal place to visit and live in, but your points about the cityscapes is well made. Some people find it awe inspiring, but I just see it as one eye sore after another. Luckily local transportation is incredibly well run, so even from some of the most intensely populated urban areas you can escape to some nice smaller suburbs and some larger natural parks or small mountains.

      And the English situation is quite dire, but they do learn it in school. They start in elementary school, so they know quite a lot, but due to structural problems they lack in some essential skill sets. You're unfortunately better off writing what you need and showing it to them (obviously not practical).
      And to comment on the expats complaining about not finding japanese friends: most of the RUclipsrs do not speak Japanese very well, so they expectedly get caught in expat communities. I can't really imagine someone going to America, for example, without the ability to speak English and subsequently complaining about finding all Americans are hard to get along with.

      Also, about Japanese media, many of these games and anime are literally for children or teenagers. There are centuries of mature, nuanced storytelling that run through all kinds of media (novels, poetry, theater, film, painting, etc.)
      Japan is a unique country, but people need to refrain from applying grand narratives to superficial readings of hot topics/stories/discourses.
      And I'd say Japan is as cool as the west is. It's just easier to filter out some of the cringiest qualities of our own culture (which more often than naught is specifically *pop* culture). Underground, alternative cultures exist here as they do anywhere.

    As a Parisian, i feel what you're saying about being ripped off for food 😂
    I visited Japan in 2017 and I have to agree with lots of your points. Food is so excellent (traditionnal for the most part) that even the best mcdonalds i ever ate was in Japan!

    "Tonkatsu" ...I've traveled to Japan a few dozen times and only recently has the FX rate become crazy good due to COVID, inflation and other economic factors (and it's getting better). I was there for a month earlier in the year and stunned by the exchange rate, so I loaded up on electronics, camera lenses, etc., that I would never otherwise buy. Even real-estate is a steal now.

    I wonder when you say the storytelling seems juvenile if it’s because the adults are overworked and kids are the only ones consuming media there? Or adults just prefer light entertainment that requires minimal thought after their long days.

    • @findcalm
      @findcalm  9 месяцев назад

      yeah both might be true (and admittedly, I admin I enjoy "light entertainment" too, I don't get tired of the same shonen or isekai stories I guess :D)

    A lot of the time Japanese food doesn't look all that appetizing to me. Very wet (it's like they drench everything in soup or bouillon) and with very large 'sheets' of meat, and indeed, not very much vegetables.
