The song was written based on the lead singer's experiences at a camp for troubled teens. He was mentoring this kid whose friend had died, so he got into drugs and all kinds of trouble. His parents didn't know what to do; they'd tried "laying down the law", telling him if he doesn't shape up then he'll have to get out of the house. Didn't work. In the end, no one was able to reach the kid, and the lead singer kept wishing there was some kind of "manual" or process that he could have followed to save the kid, or for the kid to save his friend. So that's what the song is about: how there's no step-by-step process to save a life, but how you can't just expect to tell someone "shape up, this is what you need to do" and think it'll help. That you need to listen and support them as best as you can an hope they understand. As someone who's struggled with an anxiety/depressive disorder most of my life, I'll admit I tear up every time I hear this song...
@@bahrhsjajfj8771 I couldn't find out exactly, other than that "no one could reach him". Which could either mean he just kept on the same destructive path, or... worse :/
Scrubs lunch episode replaced it's personal attachment to the song that I had with it. I almost forget the moment I had saved my own life at the time. I struggle but am made strong for it. I hope you are, also.
As someone who has thought of suicide before this song really makes you think and feel. Please be kind to others because you never know what their live is like and YOU MATTER. Never let someone tell you otherwise!!
This song is, deep! My wife made listen to this song after my last deployment. She was telling me that she was here for me know matter what! Don't be afraid to open up to her and it's ok for a Marine to drop his tuff man syndrome and let the tears flow!
Cable Car (Over My Head) is another amazing song by The Fray. It's one of those ones that both me and my 14 yr old have to stop and sing along to when it comes on.
That was such a lovely message at the end you guys. I remember that song. It always makes me cry. Good to see you guys when I'm up late in Australia.💜💛💚
