  • See and hear the big 6/4 size 4v tuba. Note you can play a 6/4 delicately. Here is the Grand in a wind ensemble/community band setting. • 8/28/2022 - The Wylie ...

    What stand are you using?

They call it the 'tuba rest' and DEG makes it. People complain the rubber pad bit coming off and I don't think I fixed that, but hot melt glue would. Others strip out threads, but I have a 'mechanic's touch' so it doesn't bother me. There are better, but this pulled into 2 pieces easily goes into the gig bag. This style won't work with a bell forward like my 1925 king. Instead, I cut the front off a folding metal chair and welded it to another so I could put a wooden pedestal on it that raises the horn up. In the old days I muscled this stuff, but now I can just worry about playing. Now the mouthpiece is always at the right height. You have to decide what is easier to tote or a bigger stand that might get in the way in the pit. I remember doing one job with the king and I could not lean it over let alone put it on its side to change books! Here is my home made rig for the king. I sometimes use it with the 681 because I just have more room on the chair. But.... another cat showed me that you can just use a bit of rubber mesh silverware drawer liner and the horn won't slide about on plastic or metal chairs. DOH! If I could weld and bulid a custom set....well.... 'KISS' (keep it simple stupid - for engineers). Here is a vid with the king setup clearly visible. ruclips.net/video/JajQvmm2AMk/видео.html

In the other reply I should say the tuba rest type stands won't work with the bell forwards (recording) because the center of gravity is pitched forward and the stand kicks out. The stand kicks back towards your chair, so... the king rig noted below.

IS THIS BEST MUSIC TO SHOW OFF THIS TUBA?

why not? plenty of orchestras play pops. the key is to hear the horn. you can follow the link to hear it in a band setting. i have literally played every style of music on the tuba. polka, wind ensemble, orchestra, fox trot.... i talk about my demo philosophy in the demo. can the horn play loud/soft/in tune, etc. generally BBb would be brighter in sound. this sort of a BBb iteration of a CC horn. however you can effect a lot of change with mouthpiece selection. so....? can you change tone color just by playing? what does the music call for? i suppose i could have played an etude...but what makes a song what? These songs do not need ensemble context to be relatable.
