In this video I walk you through and demonstrate the cleaning out of old light seals on a Ricoh 500G rangefinder camera. Then show you how to replace new light seals using a pre-cut kit from Jon Goodman. If you'd like to skip that part and just see the photos I took with the camera afterwards, skip to timestamp 10:31
If you would like to purchase a light seal kit from Jon, email him at Jon_Goodman@yahoo.com

Thanks for your helpful video. I just bought one from a flea market for 5 euros and will change the light seals after I've finished shooting my first roll. ✌
That’s great! I’m so glad I’ve helped
Oh ... !!!
I saw a Kodak Brownie Reflex Synchro Model in the intro. I also have one of those.
She waits patiently for the cleaning of all of her optical surfaces. (I'm afraid of disarming the shutter and parts of the interior will fly out ...)
I'll get in touch with Mr. Goodman on my other cameras.
Good video, good repair, and good camera.
Greetings from Argentina. Merry Christmas.
That was the very first vintage camera I purchased back when I was 15. I actually just took one apart and cleaned it. It was covered in white fuzzy mold. It was so weird! The shutter is behind a separate plate you can leave on if you just want to clean the mirrors and lenses. Hope that helps! Merry Christmas from Florida.
What a fun little camera!
It really is.
Wonderful! Thanks for this tutorial! I just found a silver Ricoh 500G in the thriftstore. Had to do a lot of cleaning as well of the old, gooey lightseals! Will replace them and look forward to shooting with it.
Beautiful pictures you shot with this camera! 😊
Thank you! Good luck with yours! It’s a really good camera
Thanks for another great video. Light seals is one of the few repairs I've ever considered doing.
Thank you. Yes that’s why I like to share it with people because it’s one of the few things you can do yourself and a lot of times it’s all that needs to be done to get a camera in use again
Thank you for this very informative video. Now I feel confident I can restore my Ricoh 500GX to working condition.
That’s great to hear. Thank you for watching.
Great results! I'll have to keep Jon in mind when I finally replace the seals in my Mamiya!
About to try servicing some of my cameras so this was a perfectly timed video for me!
Awesome. Thank you Holly
Nice One Aly ,not only great photos but a really good repair 👍🏻👏🏻
Thank you 😊
Jon is the real MVP! Also, super keen to see your thoughts on this camera in your review video
Thank you! Yes Jon is awesome. I will do a review soon :) I will say I’ve been really enjoying this camera
hey Aly, great video. I liked how did you do this video
Thank you Luiz :)
Cool video Aly! Looks like a nice and sharp little shooter.
Thanks Davy. It’s a really nice and underrated camera.
Great vid!
Thanks!
Very nice.
Thank you Merlin
Very helpful, thank you for sharing!
Thank you
I have my eye on a 500G but the seals are gone. I’m aware that it’s a big pain in the butt to replace but after watching your video, I’m pretty confident that I’m up for the job. Thank you for your detailed video! I also have a Ricoh 35 ZF and am curious to see the differences between the ZF Viewfinder & 500G Rangefinder.
Awesome I’m glad my video could encourage you to give it a try. The kit really made it pretty simple
Definitely encouraged me to give it a try along w my Ricoh Half which desperately needs replacing. Quick question, if you don’t mind? What’s the mm size of the foam? 1 or 2 mm?
@@heartsonfyre hmm I’m not sure. I purchased the kit so I didn’t buy the foam but I would say 1mm. It was thin
Awesome! That’s what I thought as well. Thank you! Appreciate you!
Great video! I've got my eye on a few of these on eBay and I'm really tempted to take the plunge - they're currently selling for about the same price as a disposable camera!
Do you have links to where we can buy the pre-cut seals from John?
Thanks!
Thank you!
Last I heard he said to just contact him at his email jon_goodman@yahoo.com
Hii, when are you going to review your vintage lenses for your Nikon f's. Thanks I just subscribed
Thanks for subscribing. I’ll be reviewing them hopefully in the near future. Is there a specific one you’re looking for?
@@AlysVintageCameraAlley yes. The vintage lenses you use on the Nikon f. Like the wide and short tells. Thanks

Thinking about doing this with the Ricoh 500g I found in my grandparents house. I’m 100% new to film photography and the foam inside mine was disintegrating. Does anyone know what type of foam I could buy and where usually sells it? (I live in Canada) or should I just take it to my local camera repair shop?
That’s exciting you found one that belonged to family. I bought my kit from someone who makes the foam cuts but you can buy sheets of 1mm foam on Amazon and cut it yourself for cheap. Good luck
