When I first heard Dimash sing Samaltau I was struck by the intensity and deep emotion from his voice for this song. The melody is so uniquely beautiful! It left a very strong impression in my mind and I decided to give it a try on the violin! To better understand the song for arranging the violin version, I did a little research on the history of this song. Based on what I read, it was a very sad period in Kazakhstan history that mass lives were lost while people were defending their land. By retrospect we can see their bravery and resilience.
This video was shot in an area in San Diego that I think slightly resembles the mountainous region in Kazakhstan.!To be honest, I had to overcome with my fear of heights. I had to stand on these uneven rocks with heels and wind pushing against me while I was balancing myself to play. One take was all I could endure standing.😄I inserted a few pictures that were taken by a very fine photographer Максим Сергеевич Золотухин from Kazakhstan to merge the sceneries of two countries together.
Music is a highly personal thing. With respect, my interpretation of the violin version for Samaltau has more of a world music feel to it. To make Dimash song into violin music certainly has its challenges. Some parts of the song that works for voice simply will sound bland on the violin. So to make those parts more interesting, I added a little Irish river dance beat. I really enjoyed making this cover song .
And thanks to Dimash, he is the reason I get to know this exquisite Kazakhstan folk song! Hope you will enjoy my video!
