anyone who can play beautiful music while looking homeless and on top of that carry a decent sense of humor is well worth appreciating.
Elems187 Haha! Yes, Nigel when he was a child and teenager was extremely well dressed and used to perform in the traditional formal way. But something happened very early in his career when he launched his first interpretation of Vivaldi’s 4 seasons. Bucking the trend, he adopted a pseudo punk style that was very unique at the time and just about media friendly enough to make him stand out visually. It was a gimmick that stayed (a scruffy appearance). It helped popularise his performances but his playing has always been fantastic. Take a listen to his Brahms violin concerto for example and his emotive playing is out of this world. Easily up there with the great virtuosos like David Oistrach and Nathan Milstein. His renditions of the Romantic repetioire are timeless. I’m not so keen on his jazz playing however, despite the fact that he played with the great Grappelli, in my view, it is not Kennedy’s forte (even though he himself would love it to be). Thanks for the comment!
@@JohnShewbrook Getting thrown out of Juilliard for playing on stage with Menuhin and Grappelli ,when he been told not to might have inspired his anarchistic approach soon after...
indeed 😆
@@JohnShewbrook That was when I first saw him playing back in 1991(or 92 I can't recall exactly). I listened that whole movement everyday I went to school. Now, I can tell where and what movement of 4 seasons that is from soon as I hear. It was such a shock his interpretation of the 4 seasons - kinda faster than normal playing and even the lighting setup was not the normal classical music hall setup. I had it on VHS tape and I lost it. I really wish I can have it digital copy of it.
@@Cest.La.Vie.. i have the original vhs recording (paid version released by the BBC). I managed to find someone on youtube who has uploaded it. You can watch it here. ruclips.net/video/pZ4D7g1zxYY/видео.html
Nigel Kennedy is one of the best violinists in the world! He plays with so much soul. I get shivers!
❤️ Only
It is 2022. The world is not happy. But we still have Nigel Kennedy and Alex Malofeev to comfort us with their incredible musical talent. 🎹🎻❤❤ Thank you genius musicians for staying with us. (Holland 🌷🌷)
Back in 1982, I was invited to play with Nigel at : " An Evening of Acoustic Jazz " in Port Erin, Isle of Man. We played without music ( I played Guitar ) for the whole three hour set, a selection of the greatest songs from The Great American Songbook, improvised entirely, with a young lady friend of Nigel's playing contrabass, and another of his beautiful entourage of young ladies, playing flute. It was a night to remember, in particular because of his sense of humour, and self deprecating modesty. Another brief encounter occurred in Amsterdam in 1993, which took place in the lobby of the Krasnapolski Hotel where Nigel was staying, where we met up and enjoyed an hour of playing the music of "The Hot Club de France " as played by Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelly , which would have gone on all night long, if the hotel manager had not intervened. Nigel Kennedy is a virtuoso, and half way to being a genius in my opinion.
Thank you for sharing that amazing personal story. It must have been a real buzz to play Jazz with Nigel. Especially considering he had been tutored by the master Grappelli. There are many imitators but as you know, Stephane was also a genius and a one off. Any violinist that is recognisable by their tone and musicality by audio alone deserves to be elevated to legendary status :-)
Nigel Kennedy plays with his soul. Thank you for lifting my soul.
Peter Petinger is wonderful too. What great musicians!
Just wanted to throw out some love for Peter Pettinger. Incredible.
Love this guy, superb violinist, totally unpretentious, one of the lads, he is unique amongst the world of concert performers.
Carry on tuning up Mr. Kennedy, it's the most beautiful thing I've ever heard xx
Nigel your music helps me get over sexual abuse in my and my families life, thank you.
Nigel I had one of your old violins when I was in school, I was thrilled to be in the orchestra and to have your violin which I did look after well. I would love to see you live one day, what a talent you have, how you read the music, how you feel the music, how you bring relief to people's minds, relax them, make them happy, how quick you are, how modest you are, how classical you are, how funny you are, how you bring the orchestra together and choose certain women to play with who are so talented, amazes me but in a control right sort of way, some is so sad and some so joysome, what are did you start playing, how much do your violins cost these day's, very expensive, I would love to hear you play in a Masonic Lodge just for me, with me giving my undying love to the GAOTU's Father who I do love dearly, he saved me from gang rape for being a Freemasons daughter in Monmouth when I was 15, actually it was after that that I gave up playing your voilin and lost my music as I suffered with Bi-polar to date. I actually have to sort out my first rape when I was a virgin of 13 years old by an idiot or three of British Royal Engineers again Monmouth. Maybe I could now play the violin again.
Who cares how he looks! He is the best, a genius, Good bless him !! I love him and I wish to him a long life!!
Nigel Kennedy, you play heavenly, it s just wonderful, thank you very much !! You're exceptional
Nigel was and is one of a kind. Love this guy! His playing is incredible!
Have a listen to his rendition of the Sibelius and Brahms Violin Concertos (and the Tchaikovsky). They are all incredible, passionately played and very moving. He has an uncanny ability to touch the heartstrings of the listener. You would never think it to look at him would you?! But then, this has been his USP for many years now.
Such great intonation...
He is amazing!
Ιδιαίτερα ευαίσθητος, ιδιοφυής και θαρραλέος...
Σπάνιος ❤️
Brilliant, as always.
Love his sound ..more and more .
the comments on appearance always say more about the preconceptions of the observer than the person being observed. This guy brings me to tears with his interpretations, isn’t that what it’s all about?
Thanks RUclips!!; Nigel is not only one of the greatest violinists but his sense of humor, passion; his communication with colleagues and his public are superb!!
Nigel is a old friend from my 20s, he was brilliant then and awesome now, good one mate, second only to Stephan Grapelli big respect!
I meant to say UP THERE WITH
glyn Pendragon Awesome, Nigel inspired me when i started playing as classical music can be so inaccessible, he always makes it fun. The best in my humble opinion.
Bootsy Pendragon n
R.I.P Benny Harvey, gone but not forgotten. Still miss you big man.
A really true genius and he will always be remembered and documented as such long after we are all gone.
i remember when this was new, he is so good..... like meeting an old friend after a long break
Stuart Shone me too Stuart....where did those 26 years go?! I can even remember the comedian who was on before Nigel gave his performance. He was a really tall blond haired guy who brought on a double base with a door in the back of the instrument, that he used to take things in and out of it as part of his act! Quite unique and and i never saw his act on tv again lool! Mind you, there is always Britains got Talent if he’s still around....
Will never forget the two concerts of his I attended age 15 and 16.
Absolute geezer
Definitely all the right notes in the right order, that’s serious dedication you can’t fake
Kennedy - a long time advocate for the performance of baroque music on period instruments.
Thank you for sharing your divine renditions of other Geniuses like you. You lift my spirit. May God bless you
brilliant and beautiful :)
Bach and Kriesler was an inspired choice from the young Nigel!
Exceptionnel
Si la perfection est de ce monde....je pense que Nigel l'incarne totalement....❤️
Amazing performance !
What a total boss.
These English lover of mine are so beautiful. And simlpe. No death centence. Just be alive. Love you.
easily the greatest fiddler of our time.
He is truly amazing
I agree, John. It was an incredible performance. Thank you for posting.
Absolutely beautiful ! Genius! Thank you for elevating my spirit !
Bach, Kreisler and Kennedy...they make a great trio :-) (not forgetting Mr Pettinger of course!).
Nigel é tão maravilhoso!! Hoje assisti na tv ele improvisar Vivaldi!!!! Que delícia. Gênio!!!
You have to love him what a great talent
He is soooo good at playing
Fantastic performance. Nigel upozowany na Janka muzykanta. :) If you are Polish, you know what I'm talking about.
Bravo Maestro!
I love him so much!
But he brings back Bach, Vivaldi and all the classics to life with as much life and excitement as me a 40 something year old returning to listening to the sex pistols
Nigel is amazing
Great! I lucky saw him in London's Royal Albert Hall!!!
so beautiful
it brings me to tears
Great 👍💙
Brilliant!🌷
Incredible
wow
His appearance basically symbolized “don’t judge the books by its cover” I know it sounds cliché but just wanna pin point out there for other commentators who are quick to judge Nigel.
P.S his performance of Vivaldi: Winter always send chills down my spine *Bravo*
👍🙏🙏🙏🙏👏👏👏👏
I just love his playing and his personality. Somehow he's very British, and that sense of humour is the best. He looks like a guy who just popped out to an off licence to buy some booze lol
Marvelous
formidabile..molto bravo...☺
punk is not dead !
LOVELY when he is on he is just a ball of fire. Nothing ells to compare too. Boom right off the bat. Beginners warm up joke somewhere.
Notice, that Nigel plays with his eyes shut, much like his rendition of the Walton Violin Concerto that we attended at Sheffield City Hall, in the 1980s.
nice transition from bach to kriesler!
Allways a wow!
💖💖💖💖💖💖👍👍👍👍😢
Nigel I have choir practise soon, I will no doubt be telling them I've been listening to you.
That was amazing ffs
Genius
As good as it gets!
This is just perfekt .
Awesome skills. I couldn't follow this well all the way, probably my hearing or slow brain, but I can follow, say, the Toccata and Fugue D minor perfectly hearing and understanding every note.
Genial!
Simply channelled by god
genial
За внешним эпатажем - изумительный скрипач и неповторимая личность.
Bach knew how to please the greatest players
😊
Vagabond genius.
What’s the name of the Kreisler piece he plays? It’s beautiful
The Kreisler piece is called ‘Praeludium and Allegro’.
No amount of vagrant chic bad dress sense can detract from the pure genius of that Kreisler Praeludium performance. Immaculate.
John Plunkett Mr Kennedy went through a brief ‘scruffy hobo’ look back then, which puzzled many of his fans and admirers. He has always been a bit anti-establishment that belies the beauty of his playing. What is a shame is how outward appearances can detract from the serious talent he had. His interpretations of the Brahms violin concerto for example is up there with the legends of the craft like David Oistrach and Nathan Milstein (in my personal opinion). Not better, just different and as good. I love the other two virtuosos just as much. It was Nigel Kennedy and this performance where i learned about Kriesler’s fantastic Praeludium and Allegro. I’d never heard of it before that. It inspired me to learn and read more about Fritz Kreisler where i discovered he was one of first violinists to extend the vibrato technique that we know and love today. Before him, it wasn’t used as much as it is in the modern era. Listen to Itzhak Perlman’s incredible tone and it can be traced back to Kreisler. Thank you for your comment.
John Shewbrook That Brahms recording is one of my two favourite discs of all time, the other being Glenn Gould’s second recording of the Goldberg. One hell of a performance from Tennstedt and the orchestra as well. The purity and intensity of sound and depth of feeling he’s capable of generating is something else. And yes I agree about the individuals moaning about his outward appearance, they don’t understand what they’re listening to.
Yeah the Brahms with Tennstedt is out if this world. I’ll add the Sibelius and the second recording of the Elgar. Genius.
@@JohnHAdams-vo2pk Yes, i love the Sibelius too!
Dig the taliban look. I remember this from years ago. What a performance.
A true prophet.
Anyone listening to the clothes is not seeing the music. Anyone listening to the music is not seeing the clothes.
It is not his jacket that plays the violin, as shocking as that may be to some. Nor his hair.
What he teaches us, beyond the music, is that music doesn't care if you're a punk, ted, mod or 1930s aristocracy.
I don't care what he's like as a person, when it comes to the music. If it matters, it does so only about him as a person.
Jonathan Day and in his day, Nigel’s interpretations of the great works were up there with the best of his contemporaries...Perlman, Sitkovetsky, Midori, Chang etc. Despite selling millions of albums, i’m not sure he always got the credit he truly deserved. His Brahms violin concerto in particular is an incredible recording.
wielki byleś jesteś i będziesz
He is not British. He is NIGEL KENNEDY. The nation of few persons ... like Stravinsky, Zappa, Trey Gunn, McLaughlin etc. Pure beauty, incomprehensibile for most
Whats with the Rasputin look? but anyhow one of the worlds greatest.
He's always been quite eccentric
Waar Ben jij ???
genius rebel X
I wish i could make him happy.
I'm sure you could.
Fuck me
Mind blowing
Nigel kennedy, reminds me physically of Gary Oldman in Leon or a young Tom Hardy
Play it LOUD!
Ta parecendo um andarilho kkkkk toca muito
Vivaldi....áthallás
he reminds me of Thom Yorke
4:22 daí é com Deus.
NEIGEL VIN O LA MAGDEBURG IN MEMORIA LUI EMIL KLEIN CELLO
X e r s c e s Tripps guns
Looked like a bloody tramp ffs,but incredible playing, played with his eyes shut, not looking at his fingers, not looking at music, all that in his head really amazing just a fantastic violinist, how do you write music like this tho ,Bach Vivaldi Mozart Beethoven etc amazing
I never got why they pushed him into that ridiculous punk image?! He is a brilliant musician and was taught by Yehudi Menuhin and Dorothy DeLay, so why this image? Did they think that someone who likes Discharge, Dead Kennedys, Joy Division or Crass suddenly thinks "wow, this guy is sporting a mohawk like me - let's buy his records"?! pointless...
Августовское воодушевление. The image was all Kennedy’s idea. The punk persona was never my cup of tea either but his musicianship was so fantastic i learned to ignore it. He has clung on to this scruffy style (image wise) for his entire career, which has distracted from his genius in some quarters. His concerts still sell out and many audiences love him despite the image he chose for himself. I also think he might be on the autistic spectrum slightly. Mainly because to ignore the advice of the companies who have employed his services over the years and steadfastly refuse to budge on PR matters when it comes to his personal appearance.....it is not exactly normal. It is more than just physical behaviour, it is in his mannerisms and traits. Either way, i’ve enjoyed his performances from the beginning and think his interpretations can be incredibly passionate and moving. The Brahms Violin Concerto is up there with the very best.
@@JohnShewbrook he certainly is a brilliant and touching violinist. Best!
I agree I think a Ronald McDonald outfit or even cross dressing would be better than this ‘I’ll be whoever I want to be’ nonsense.
This was during a frankly hilarious period when Nigel Kennedy decided he was going to be working class. He kept wearing an Aston Villa scarf, talking in a ridiculous affected accent, and wearing god-awful clothes. He probably cringes looking back. The music was, of course, always stunning, no matter what he looked like.
Annoying chap
Superb musician
His skill is amazing no music in front of him truly a maestro but don’t like the image ,looks like a tramp, but hay he is unique
