Sorry for the late reply. Have been really busy. Thank you for the kind words despite the difference in opinion! As for your question, oh man, that would be such a looooong discussion haha! But I'll focus on one angle for now based on the major theme of the show and character arcs because I only have limited time to write an explanation hahaha. I don't like basing off on actors' chemistry alone (honestly, Angel has good chemistry with BOTH of her leading men so I found that that ain't really reliable to me) kaya I've considered what type of relationships I think would give the most growth to all these characters based on what we've seen of their personality and history. [I'm not sure if you'll still read this because it ended up to be really long O_O I got carried away, sorry. Hahahaha anyway...] The whole story of TGD is based on the perennial theme of Filipino teledramas: love. This series is all about Rhian finding and giving love in its various forms to other characters and vice versa (but of course it doesn't sound that simple when you add all the plots and secrets)--and finding herself in the process. Rhian's monologue at the start of the series was quite clear about it. So I'm going to start with Franco muna to answer your question. What does Franco know of love? The closest thing to real love he's received was Diana's innocent kindness when they were children. That's what he remembered when Rhian questioned him about it (we could probably include his mother's love too but that's just assumed since we're not shown much about that past). He 'loves' Rhian but he doesn't really know how, if that makes sense. We saw this when he wanted to protect her but ended up hurting her more when he led the massacre in Sto. Francisco and even the killing of the witness and his wife. I'm not saying this to lambaste him but to point out that this is where I personally find more potential for his character. He's a character who desires love and needs it to learn how to love. He'll most probably learn how to love from Rhian who has already learned how from other people. The kind of love Rhian has is that of sacrifice (agape na! highest form of love ❤). She constantly puts her life on the line, sacrificing comfort and happiness, just to protect everyone she cares about (which includes him). And I think it would be beautifully bittersweet when Franco's first great act of love is to sacrifice as well by giving Rhian up for her to be happy. That would be part of his redemption, too. (I've read a few other people having similar trains of thought) Rhian has mentioned several times that all she wants is a quiet and normal life with family after the mess that is her current life. Sadly, I can't imagine her having it with Franco, not with all the crimes he has to pay for. And can you imagine Marcial or Isabelle actually accepting Franco into the family? There's too much suspicion and pain there, the dynamics would be too messed up. Franco will have to accept that Diana isn't just Diana. She is also Arabella, the daughter of Marcial De Leon, who'll live in a different world that he won't be able to fit into. At least, not as her lifelong partner. The 'going-against-all-odds' appeals to me but I always seek balance between the idealistic and the pragmatic in things, even in dramas (which often goes unfulfilled haha). True love will always 'win' but not always in ways we want it to. As for Ethan, his situation is quite the opposite of Franco's. He has always experienced love. Even when his father died and his mother fell into a coma, he still had Claire plus the De Leon family who loved him and who he loved in return. His primary character motivations are spurred by love for family. But, nothing has really challenged the depths of his love for a person in the way that his love for Rhian is being challenged now. I don't agree that Ethan just ultimately loved a mask. In the beginning, yes. But, after meeting Isabelle, Rhian's mask started to crumble, allowing her to be genuine with how she dealt with Ethan. Ethan loved a true her, just not the whole her, if that makes sense. However, I agree that Ethan's love for her somehow came about a bit 'too' easily. Ethan didn't know her fully when he first loved her. Rhian's true identity is testing him. For Ethan, he has to accept that Rhian isn't just Rhian. She's Diana, the daughter of Tiago Guerrero, too. In his case, I find the greatest potential in his character, his very-loyal-to-honor character, to truly love Rhian by forgiving, accepting, and loving her all over again for who she is and DESPITE of what she's done. He has to get past the pain of betrayal, and, in a sense, would have to enter and get to know Diana's world in order to understand her (add to this that showing him trying to understand a part of Rhian that is really foreign, even unpleasant, to him is I think one good way to add more layers to his character, even if he doesn't end up with her). As for Rhian, I just want her character to be happy. She loves Ethan. And she'll probably love Franco as well (although, we don't know yet in what way). Also possible that she might not end up with anybody (which I think they can pull-off believably). But I personally think, considering everything (not just the 3 of them), she has the potential to become happiest with Ethan. That's why I'm all for the Rhian-Ethan pair even though this ship seems to be sinking and is the less popular one hahaha. I have reasons on the side of Rhian and a few more analyses on Ethan and Franco's characters but this has been too long na for one night XD In the end, this is just my amateur take on things HAHA. Trusting the writers that whatever happens, the ending will do justice to all the characters of TGD ❤
