We were on QM2’s Maiden Voyage 12th January 2004. I will never forget that date. She is an amazing ship and respectfully received the torch from QE2 in the 21st century. We’ve been on QM2 four times. Each time is a sense of occasion! We also had the good fortune to cross the Atlantic on QE2 in August 2000. We love the days at sea! So much to do on QM2 and the Cunard White Glove Service is iconic!!! We hope there will always be at least one Cunard liner crossing the Atlantic in future days.
There's nothing like traveling on the QM2 ocean liner. I hope there is always the chance to experience the joy of an ocean voyage. It is unique and exceptional.
I just finished a QM2 South Hampton to Brooklyn crossing. It was amazing. The QM2 was a delightful ship - lots to do and explore. I do hope that when the QM2 is retired there will be a successor.
It is remarkable the amount of people that were involved in the creation of QM2, it’s certainly a formidable task to design a new Ocean Liner and not a cruise ship. I can’t imagine the amount of hurdles that had to be overcome but I’m sure in the future we will get to see another Ocean Liner. Technology like time moves on and with advancement of things it might well be the case that we will have hybrid cruise ships or something of a new type. QM2 is a testament to engineering skill and the way it works is awesome. It’s a bit weird to think it can leave the quayside in a sideways direction and you don’t notice it at the time. As they say only time will tell.
I am looking forward to my first voyage on the Queen Mary 2 later this year! Growing up in Southern California I remember the original sailing to her permanent home in Long Beach in 1967.
I sailed a westbound TA a couple of weeks ago and it was six nights and a roughly 5 1/2 days. We were roughly an hour and a half behind schedule due to strong headwinds and a slight changed of course. We ended up being roughly 4 hours behind as we had to wait for the tide to change in NY. The positive result was that we entered NY harbor after breakfast and not before dawn!
Just returned from a crossing onboard QM2. My 2nd within a twenty year gap. QM2 was new last time! Unfortunately, she arrived in NY 4 hours late. Now Mr. Payne once said that she would never be late unless the seas were worse then they had been for 100 years of mechanical issues. I assume the latter, after as it was not a very rough crossing! However, the Master blamed a storm and the course around it, that we took.
The QM2 is truly magnificent. It is clear that she has set the bar appropriately high on the standards required of an ocean liner into the future. Dr Stephen Payne's most helpful insights in this short video are welcome and re assuring. Thank you, Chris, once again for bringing this update to us.
QM2 is so amazing, she is such a unique and beautiful ship. Hoping she lasts for many years to come and if the day comes where she is retired then I hope another similar design is considered.
There needs to be a liner. I loved the journey over the Atlantic on QM2. The ship, the service, the way things were done, the dressing-up. So different from my day-to-day life, it really takes you somewhere else. It's a different class.
I have sailed QM2 and QE3. The QE3 captain publicly says QM2 is over there will not be another. I love Cunard though really my favorite ship is Princess Caribbean Princess. She crosses the Atlantic without difficulty. QM2 is marvelous engineering I am so blessed to have sailed her several times.
That's awesome that Mr. Payne has a new mentee under his wing who's interested in this! My hopes for a new liner just shot up a good bit hearing that. As I've said before, I am every bit confident that there will be a new liner as long as there is a market for it. :D
With the popularity the QM2 pulls, even in the post Covid era, I think it's likely they build two smaller, proper ocean liners to give them more total capacity and flexibility.
It depends on what sort of profits the QM2 is generating - if she is a less profitable ship in relation to say the Queen Anne etc then it may be that it will come down to hard facts and return on the investment. The element of prestige would not I think overcome the financial aspects of the decision. It would need to use a cleaner fuel too in twenty years time so that would need to be worked into the design.
If they want to maintain their year-round transatlantic crossings and world voyages, they’ll need to have an ocean liner. Cruise ships are not designed for the open ocean and its adverse weather; just ask anyone who has been on a repositioning cruise.
Ultimately, the QM2 will come to an end point in her service life. Her liner attributes clearly make it unique. That said, it plays to a niche market and the product itself is becoming a bit tired and old. While not a hull issue, its current design configuration does not allow for much in the way of incremental revenue generation while on board. This of course can be changed. The key question for Cunard will be whether parent Carnival's debt profile improves over the next decade to justify the expense. That said, my money is on MSC stepping into this space should Cunard decide its priorities are elsewhere. MSC is privately owned, loves New York, is diversified within the maritime segment, and seemingly likes to invest. Its DNA seems more suited to this type of investment. Interviewing Mr Payne get's you only so far in answering the question as to a successor of QM2. It can be built. That's the easy part, engineering and design prowess aside. It's the senior management and/or owner who signs the shipyard contract!
is it wrong to like and subscribe just because he's so damn handsome? from what I have seen, it is mostly old brits going on these cruises who will die off soon, so I think if there is another one it will be smaller. there is a romance to this sort of ship that is nearly exhausted I think. it would be nice to have a ship that crosses so one can avoid planes if really desired, so perhaps, but it will probably go the way of night trains
I doubt there will be, carnival corp. now controlled by bean counters. And from the looks of things people are tired of the ships and the tourists visiting them.
Will there be another Ocean Liner? OR will QM2 be the last? Let me know what you think!
I hope so.
Sadly no. QM2 is all we have.
Guys titanic ii is happing
That ship will replace titanic ii
That ship will replace Queen Mary 2
An absolute joy to do the crossing. After three times, the enjoyment keeps growing.

I do hope that one day an ocean liner will one day replace the magnificent QM2. No ship crosses the Atlantic more comfortably than an ocean liner.

I hope the next one is as elegant as QM2

I do hope so transatlantic cruises are such a great way to get to New York and visa versa!

Magnificent design and engineering. It takes the North Atlantic in its stride. Truly wonderful.

Fascinating. Such a high quality interview! Thank you, both!!
Thank you Chris and Stephen, greatly appreciate your expertise.

I never sailed a true Ocean Liner until I sailed QM2 in 2004,during her inaugural season from New York to the Caribbean.
In my fictional cruise universe, I have multiple ships that are ocean liners and some as duel purpose, a ocean liner and cruise ship in one ship.
That's awesome that Mr. Payne has a new mentee under his wing who's interested in this! My hopes for a new liner just shot up a good bit hearing that. As I've said before, I am every bit confident that there will be a new liner as long as there is a market for it. :D
Let’s hope so the beauty of the vessel we need icons not just tin cans

Great interview. Thank you!!
I think QM2 is the last. Without Arison at the helm theres no drive to build another true liner.
My first crossing on QM2 was in 2006, and we did it in under FIVE days! They've slowed her way down, to save fuel, I guess
Queen Anne is crossing from Southampton to New York in January of 2025. It is scheduled to take 9 days...Is she rated for WNA??

I think for their 250th ship, it would be a stroke of genius. It might even allow them to do dual East / West crossings.
Is there going to be another interview with Dr. Stephen Payne soon?
If they don’t it’ll be a damn shame. If they do, it better have a proper promenade deck, unlike the Queen Anne.

I hope it’s rather premature to be talking a replacement for QM2 - she was built to have a 40 year working life I believe!
Absolutely, the full interview linked in the description explains this in detail.
I hope there's another ocean liner because these modern cruise ships are hiddeous! Icon of the Seas is 🤢
Yoo titanic ii is gonna replace queen Mary 2 titanic 2 will enter service in June 2027
Let’s revisit that comment in 3 years and see how it aged ☺️
