I’m 77 and I started tearing into Flatheads when I was 12 years old. I know or know of most of these guys. These guys are the core of true Hot Rodding. I live about 20 minutes from Vern Tardell’s Shop, but there are so many guys around the country still going strong. God Bless all those who are no longer with us…
Interesting. I'm a year younger, hung with older car guys from pre teen years, learned right away flattys don't have any top end power. Great movie but I'm a fan of the Big Block Chevy, and the 385 Ford is pretty good too.
@@misterhipster9509it’s funny how each generation or even a closer age grouping can differ so much on engine preferences I started messing with engines during the energy crisis so I am an early fan of turbocharged inline 4 cylinder engines and we get no respect until race day and I show the big blocks a set of tail lights 😂😂
@@jarvislarson6864 I guess depends on what you like. If you like a loud obnoxious 427 Side Oiler well, the flattie isn't for you. Personally, I love both. I have a bone stock flattie in my '53 F100. My brother has the 427 side Oiler in his '65 F100. They are both great. What I HATE are these kid's Japanese cars that sound like bumble bees in a can and loud as Hell. Oh, wait...Also I can't stand the guys with the loud as Hell new Mustangs and Chargers. "Let's see how loud can I make it"? Yeah, I'm old...58 YO. "Now, get off my lawn"!
love them flatheads first car 49 merc in 1960 then 47 ford vert. 53 merc Monterey 60 years later I have 27 t coupe with 53 merc 2/4 race vintage aluminum heads two 2s and lots of old Mooneys stuff. I'm 80 and still love can't wait for spring.
I enjoyed watching this movie. I helped my cousin rebuild the Mercury flathead in his '41 Ford when I was in junior high school. It was stock, but loads of fun. I was amused how everyone in the movie called them motors. I was taught that motors ran on electricity and engines ran on fuel.
When I was in the salvage business I used to do a lot of farm cleanups. One of my best finds was a lincoln v16 motor. 2 flathead v8s connected. Got a pretty penny for that.
I met this guy that made this documentary at a car show and bought a CD from him when it first came out he was a really good guy for sure and I think you did a really good job on this documentary
When I was running my Flattie ,no one else was interested in them any more ,because it was all SBC's. Mine was a grenade,3/8 x 3/8 bored (!) and stroked with a Isky cam ,triple twos and a 36 straight cut gears trans. Great fun when your're 19 and invincible.
I enjoyed this from the moment it started and right through the ending credits. I could have watched two more hours of it. All of these guys are excellent. I learned things about the flathead Ford that I never knew.
32's are sweet, but my fave has always been 33' - 34' Ford Coupes. I thought the Main Cap Bolts were supposed to be dipped in motor oil before being torqued. Thanks, and keep them coming
I always loved the Looks and sound of the Flatheads but I was longing for more horsepower so then I was the guy tearing the flatheads out of Hotrods in favor of any engine with overhead valves SBCs... Y Blocks... Cadillacs... Oldsmobile's and DeSoto's. Now that I'm nearing 67 I went back to the simplicity and the sound of Fatheads! So now I have a 47 flathead powered T Roadster I helped a friend build 30 plus years ago... go figure.... I went full circle!
I had a flathead 1939 9N Ford tractor. Sadly sold it 5 years ago but the new owner loves it, takes good care of it and it is still running fine, mowing his fields. Solid engine! Yes, have to find another one! 😅
What's interesting is that these car's with just a few modern upgrades are fully capable of running right along with modern traffic on a daily basis without all the big tech and still cheaper to maintain.

I’m 80 years old❤. My first car was a 1931 ford coup. I paid $50.00. I bought it from a lady whose husband worked for Southern pacific railroad and had been killed
Where and from what is that ominous opening footage from??? Again a cool doomsday feel of what's sometimes called a Fascinating Horror by now on RUclips. There's a channel called that actually. Cool.
I know nothing about these engines or traditions but it is so cool. Growing up in America I’ve always loved the hot rod scene but have never got into it. But the 40s and 50s style is iconic Americana and has stayed cool after all these years. It’s funny because Chicanos chose to go in the opposite direction with low and slow cars. I wonder if race had anything to do with why Chicanos chose the opposite of what White hot rodders were doing?
Loved the video but the volume of music was very annoying. Thanks for making it, although it should be about the flatheads and their fans, not the music.
Lots of great info this video. I had to turn the volume down to almost nothing before I could stand it. I would have much rather heard the sounds of good running flatheads than that head banger shit.
When you think of the engines how they went from flathead to computerized now you have have a computer degree in order to work on those engines that have all kinds of sensors not like when those flathead were popular.
Ultra cool opening footage of the industrial 'Frankenstein' behemoth known as the American auto manu- factory complex in the USA, and industries in general if you ask me. Hello to some causes of the global warming we are at the door of horror of today. In less than 200 years we have bent and dented our planet's character.
I’m 78 and have had early Fords for 60 years. I drive a 39 Deluxe coupe that I have had for 57 years now. I never has a flathead driver why because I could build a SBC for a lot less and go faster.
i believe that your intentions were sincere id rather hear the flathead on a rpm/torque test thats music to me i know it takes work to get a guitar to do what you want it to do so kudos but that is not why im here my taste in music is so much different than yours no longer interested in your vid heavy metal is all to do with weight under the hood ...cheers
Do Hot Roders actually like overly loud, irritating music? - Or do you purposely intend to force them to adjust the volume in case you have something worthwhile to say? - OR do you want to FORCE us away from your channel ? - Bye, bye
A blast from the past. Love to keep the hot rod tradition alive. Great movie with cool cars

Detroit is Motor City. Not engine town.
I had to chuckle when the first scene was someone beating on a ford with a hammer 😂😂😂
Agreed. Engines run on fuel and motors run on electricity that’s always been the correct description.
I could do without the stupid music.
I mean… Mercury Outboard Motors, and Mercury Engines both being similar ,but different things.
Certainly makes the terminology funny.
Blown Flathead is the ultimate Hot Rod IMO. Flatheads Forever! 🤟😎

That flathead sound is wonderful, despite the sound being a result of a design compromise.

The flatheads I work on are only one cylinder; Briggs and Stratton, Tecumseh, etc!

Cool! This was obviously filmed a few years ago.

The old Chevy 216 Stovebolts were generally better starting engines in cold weather that flathead V8's. Compression difference was a key.
Nothing like the sound of a flathead V8 with a pair of smitty's mufflers...👍
I had the Mercury one with the extra headbolts.
