  • The Roland SPD-SX PRO is the ultimate sampling pad designed to take a beating night after night. Harnessing advanced sample pad technology, the SPD-SX PRO is packed with requested and enhanced professional features.
Part drummer, part DJ, ‪@StephaniBmusic‬ has made a splash with her house music mashups. Using a Roland sample pad combined with her high-energy and contagious happy vibes, she has amassed a following of millions. Stephani is the perfect drummer to showcase the SPD-SX PRO’s stunning light show spectacle.
This video features a large-scale sample pad concept triggered by Stephani using MIDI to DMX to control the lights in real time. When the SPD-SX PRO pads are played, the LED lights on the wall trigger in time with the LED lights on the pad.
Backed by TD-50KV2 V-Drums, Stephani shows the SPD-SX PRO in its native environment-in the dark, center-stage, ready for epic productions.

Very nice item, but for me It is missing two features to be really Pro...
    - sync tempo for loops (spd sx)
    - make loops on the fly (spd 30)
I had both old styles and after several years using them on stage I sold them to buy this new one.
I'm really disappointed and I wish they will solve this issue with new filmware.

It sounds like cheap royalty free music and its all clearly being played via a sequencer or full playback. You're really easily impressed right? It's literally one of the least useful demos I've ever seen.

I’m an SpdSx Pro owner and it’s a great device so far. The lack of tempo looping/time stretching features is shocking though. Also no round robin sample playback? Hopefully Roland fixes this.

I see that it went on loop, but I don't think the SPD-SX can go loop like the SPD-30 Octapad.
    How do they do that?

Have Roland fixed the dreaded power issue? PLEASE say it has been fixed with this new design, because I'm a bit worried to see that it looks like there's still a flappy rubber power button....
I have been using the SPD-SX professionally since it's initial release some years ago. I love it, and cannot do without it. Our band has somewhat built our set around it, as the powerful tool that it is.
However, there is a highly problematic issue with it intermittently refusing to turn on, with no apparent reason for it, and many users have experienced it.
For the record, my own units are very well cared for, kept warm and dry at all times, and transported in flight cases.
I think one of mine has actually been returned to Roland 4 times now.
The first time, they told me they replaced the main board, but when the issue soon returned, their tech support gave me no explanation for it whatsoever. To me, this suggests they are likely aware of an issue but unwilling to admit to anything, due to the liability that would obviously come with that.
Sadly, the best advice Roland customer support could give me was to purchase a second back up unit to carry around with me. Disappointing to say the least, for a product costing hundreds and marketed to professionals. Is it too much to ask to expect the unit to reliably turn on?
Each time I sent it back, and after a short period during which the problem seems to go away, it soon returns, a few weeks later.
In the end, I gave up sending it back to Roland or expecting any further support from them at all. Frustratingly my only option was indeed to carry two of them on the road, which is what I now have to do.
BOTH units have this problem. So far I've not experienced both of them refusing to turn on, at the same time. Not yet anyway, thankfully. I sincerely hope that never happens. For now at least, it seems like they have conspired between them to take turns!
After giving up on Roland, I sent my units off to an independent tech that I know personally. Outcome - No explanation, just lots of head scratching.
I even decided to take one of them apart, to see if I could pinpoint the problem myself. No explanation.
However, the mere act of unscrewing the unit and pulling the two halves of the casing apart bizarrely seems to make the problem go away for a little while. It's truly a mystery to me, but that awful flappy rubber power button seems to have something to do with it. That's my best guess, anyway.
    For the record, I also personally know three or four other professional drummers in my circle that use the SPD-SX to perform live. Every single one of them has experienced this issue themselves at some point;
Getting to a show, and experiencing the horror of it refusing to turn on. You go through a thorough process of elimination (different cables, outlets, power packs etc to rule everything else out), but we all know its a waste of time because the ONLY explanation is a power issue inside the unit itself.
We've all sent them back at some point, but Roland appear to have completely wiped their hands of the problem, admitting to nothing, which is truly disappointing.
Without any explanation from Roland proving otherwise, the ONLY explanation is an inherent flaw in the design of the SPD-SX itself.
Being totally frank, it's just not good enough for a professional level product, used by some of the world's biggest acts, on some of the world's biggest stages. Performers need reliability first and foremost, over and above everything else.
All of that being said, I will absolutely be considering this new PRO model. I can only hope Roland have quietly fixed the problem behind the scenes, and this isn't going to be an issue with the new unit.
As I have now spent an absolute fortune trying to get the previous model to RELIABLY work for me, and having had far too many heart attacks over the years getting to a show only for the unit to refuse to turn on, I will definitely be looking for clarification on this matter first.
I hope Roland could understand that my first hand experience using the previous model, and my experience obtaining proper support (or lack thereof) leads me to be extremely cautious purchasing Roland products.
Sadly at this point, I don't really trust them to actually admit to problems and do right by their customers, and that's a real shame, because the products are amazing tools and in terms of functionality. Pretty much the industry standard.
Should some kind of confirmation on this matter not be possible, then I'll be waiting patiently for the time being to see if other users experience problems in the coming weeks.
So, Roland, if you are reading this, could you confirm that the power system inside the unit has been updated in some way, changed, or improved?
If so, that would truly be enough for me to take the risk. I'd let bygones be bygones, and put one in my basket right away.......

Hi, I have a question regarding the new SPD-SX PRO. The problem is with the management and activation of the effects.
With the old SPD-SX, there were 4 buttons:
    -Filter
    -Delay
    -Sloop
    -User effect
Nothing simpler. In the PRO, there is only the Master Effect button... How do I activate multiple effects??? I've been going crazy for months...

a little sad that the video exposes the complete lack of dynamics in Roland e drums (tons af machine gunning, low layer count).. the SPD is cool though. But maybe use a little more dynamics to showcase its abilities and not a simple commercial kind of sound (wont call it music).
