I have visited Rochester twice and both times the visit was great. A really nice, compact city with much to see and do. If you do visit, try a garbage plate.
Hey, Welcome to Rochester! Exciting to see my home town in my favorite channel. Just have to say: Don’t ask me why, but it’s pronounced Ch(EYE)-L(EYE), not Chili. 😅
I don't know if I agree with east bound, that it should be Albany. Syracuse is a big city for upstate NY and it's weird to ignore it completely. And if you are going to shoot way down the road, then let it be Boston. They don't ignore Buffalo going west for Cleveland or something like that
Well, I-390 is over 70 miles long so it's a good candidate for a future video. IMO, it should eventually become part of I-99 to make at least one end of this highway useful.
11:15 to 11:45 Rochester had the Inner Loop built presumably by the State as part of its modernization and urban renewal scheme for downtown. Needless to say in the long term it proved to be a vector of blight, as you can see in the video _Rochester: City of Poverty,_ a parody of the 1963 promotional film _Rochester: City of Quality._ Both are on RUclips. 😊
6:00 - At least one of the "Stadiums" being referred to is the one where the Rochester Americans play. They're the minor-league affiliate for the Buffalo Sabres.
I have never been to Rochester but knew a lot about the place while growing up in Ottawa because our cable operators picked up American TV networks' affiliates from Rochester. I would have mispronounced Chili if it weren't for those TV stations. So thank you Channels 8, 10, and 13, especially Channel 13 who used to have the Nothnagle Gallery of Fine Homes TV Showcase every Sunday morning before Funtime Junior Bowling (from their in-house bowling alley) in the mid-1980's.
I'm aware that you're not from Rochester, so you get a pass, but the town of Chili is pronounced like Chai Lie When you are driving on 590 Northbound approaching the 490 interchange, there is signage for the pull thru lanes for the town of Irondequoit (the major north suburb of Rochester, and also where I'm from!) I was a bit disappointed you didn't mention this. That building (tower) that you thought was interesting... I'm fairly certain that's the Monroe County Prison... Just funny to me. In terms of the East Bound 490 being signed for Victor, Victor has developed into a major suburb of Rochester and a center for commercial activity (with the earlier mentioned Mall coming off of 90 being the Eastview Mall, the largest and most sophisticated mall in the area), so it's likely that many vehicles would be wanting to get there. Also, if you ever do come to Rochester, you HAVE to try a garbage plate. It's our specialty here. I've heard many people describe them as "I hate that I love it so much." Do with that what you will.
It was in the 1985-1986 season when the Kings last relocated from Kansas City to Sacramento. Between 1923 and 1957, the basketball team originates in Rochester, NY.
I believe there used to be rest areas along 490 west of Rochester but considering how close they were to the city which resulted in them not seeing much use, they ended up being converted to truck inspection stations.
Rochester is the best city in Upstate from my experience . I was there this summer for the first time. They have a waterfall in the middle of downtown. Great people, get a garbage plates 🍽️
As far as the Eastbound control city, Victor is a pretty significant suburb of Rochester, with a major regional shopping mall. If that's not a good control city, Syracuse would be a better choice than Albany since it's about 1 hr away and Albany is over 3 hrs away.
Believe it or not, Chili is pronounced "Chie-lie" in western New York. I know. It's weird. I've lived my whole life in Buffalo except for 5 years in Rochester and I've never been able to figure out why. Also Charlotte is pronounced Shar Lot.
As a Ravens supporter (especially Lamar Jackson), I felt bad for the Ravens for being eliminated after playing against the Buffalo Bills. Now, it's official for the Chiefs to play against the Bills and I'll say the Chiefs need to keep the title and become back-to-back champions.
You mispronounced LeRoy, Bergen and Chili. It's Leh - Roy (think french), Bergen is pronounced Ber-Jen, and the Is in Chili are pronounced "eye". I would sign eastbound for Canandaigua as well because most of the communters are going there.
Hey, Todd! The Chiefs are returning to the Super Bowl. I hope they get their back-to-back win. Last year, they beat the 49ers. This year, they'll face off the Eagles. Go, Chiefs, Go!
@ControlCityFreak, about what I said before, I was cheering for the Ravens and Lamar Jackson to make it far. They lost to the Bills in the conference semifinals, but if they did beat the Bills, then that would've been a different story for the Chiefs.
One of the possible origins for the name I read in a brief history of Chili, German Dutch from Pennsylvania settled southern part of the town, named it Chili after the Deutsch word for 1000 = Chil rhyme with smile, because they believed the savior will have a second coming right here and rule for a 1000 years of peace, just something I read.
So the airport was renamed to Fredrick Douglass only a few years ago. Before that it was just the Rochester Regional Airport, so I understand why they didn't put that on the sign
Neither Frederick Douglass nor Susan B Anthony are from Rochester, but both are buried there. Anthony lived at Rochester at the time of her death with her sister.
I am from long island I have never been to Rochester, however for some reason I like Syracuse better. The Rochester Jeffersons were an American football team based in Rochester, New York from 1898 to 1925. The team was a founding member of the National Football League (NFL), in which they played from 1920 to 1925.
If Ohio was to revive the I-290 numbered route, i think it could work as a beltway around Sandusky(with a bridge near the mouth of Sandusky bay). Maybe it's just me, but I think it can work, that way, if people wanted to go to Kelley's Island, Put-in-Bay, or Ontario(as in the Canadian province), they could use 290 to avoid the OH Tpk tolls.
It’s pronounced Chai-Lie, not Chile. The stadiums sign refers to the Amerk’s and Knighthawk’s Blue Cross Arena as well as the Red Wing’s Innovative field. Fishers refers to St John Fisher college.
Not quite. St. John Fisher College is along side 490 by the Fairport Rd, area. Fishers, out by Exit 45, Victor, and Eastview Mall is a town in Ontario County.
A bit late getting to this video due to coming down with a cold, but I’m back now. Using the normal left to right equals eastbound, my list is Buffalo-Le Roy-Rochester-Brighton-Perinton-Syracuse. I’ve mentioned time and time again that I’m not really a fan of the Thruway skipping everything that isn’t New York, Albany and Buffalo when there exist other very big population centers. There’s Utica (280k), Syracuse (650k), Newburgh (700k) and, yes, Rochester (1.05M). Rochester seems the most egregious as it is bigger than Albany (900k), and not much smaller than Buffalo (1.15M). Taking metro sizes into consideration, I wouldn’t start signing Albany until east of Syracuse (in a duplex until Utica), and New York until after Albany (duplexed with something in the Hudson Valley metro area). For new urban areas explored on this channel, I often highlight musical acts from said area. I tried searching through five counties (Orleans, Genesee, Wayne, Ontario and Monroe), but the only big act I found from the Rochester area was Gym Class Heroes from Ontario County. For those familiar with alternative music, though, it did look like a couple of band members associated with Sonic Youth were from Rochester also…
6:00 this is signed really bad. Whenever I go watch the Rochester Americans, minor league hockey team, I always take the inner loop. The one time I tried taking exit 12, I got lost. The inner loop exit is closer to both the minor league hockey arena and the minor league ballpark.
Todd… Totally unrelated to this video, but I recall you saying during the “All Request” video last year that you don’t plan on doing a video of the I-270 beltway around Columbus, OH. Why not? Good chance that I’m in the minority here, but I enjoy videos of the 3-digit interstates more than the US highways.
No sports related reason to do it, and it's a city I haven't spent any time in. If I ever go to Columbus that could change but I just don't really have anything to say about 270.
@@ControlCityFreak You did a road trip out west in 2024. How about a road trip to the Eastern US along I-70 in 2025? Get some video footage of New Stanton and Breezewood!
@@jordanjones5751 I have a plethora of signage ideas. For example, on I-95, south of New York, you can occasionally throw in a Miami sign. Doesn't have to be every sign. Signing Key West for Florida Keys bound traffic and a TO US 1 trailblazer, since you're dumped onto US 1 South.
@@JessicaKasumi1990 I have a great way for a signage idea.
