  • In the third video in our series we look at Blender CAD Sketcher overview compared to FreeCAD. This will show the basic usage and concept of CAD sketcher and a simple model will be created in both CAD Sketcher and FreeCAD and we will look at the similarities in the process. We will look at a simple two part extrude workflow in both software solution.

    TY for the tut! im gonna be commenting as i complete each one just to hopefully boost the entire course, but im *already* getting the hang of this faster than fusion 360

    I've watched a heap of ur freecad tutorials and it's been invaluable. I tend o design mechanical/hydraulic systems more organically which has been a bit of learning curve. Thanx for your great work mate.

      Thanks for the kind comment and it's great to see that those tutorials have helped you out. Is funny you should say about the mechanical systems. I am working with a patreon at the moment regarding mechanical movement and emulating some basic mechanics using sketcher as the bones for the movement along with assembly 4 workbench which will be appearing on the freecad channel soon so may be of interest.

    I’ve watched almost every one of your Freecad videos. For Blender, since I’m new to it, you should do a quick promotional video tailored to why a Freecad user should learn Blender. I think this will convince you Freecad video fans to watch this channel as well. Keep up the good work. 😊

      That is a great suggestion thank you. Maybe I could do one for both to make viewers aware of both channels. Some of the videos are for transition either way so it be great to explain what the channel intent is. And thank you for supporting the channel 😊😊😊😊

      @@MJ3D_Blender thanks for the response, I watched lots of your freecad videos, trying to ditch fusion 360 for something open source.
      But till now I just couldn’t get freecad to work with me, what I usually do in a couple of steps in fusion requires triple the work in freecad before it crashes or the surface is super messy.
      Trying to make a fishing lure btw, I’m gonna try blender it’s way more mature than freecad, the only downside is that it’s not a CAD software, so I have to learn how to deal with meshes now 😁.

    • @MJ3D_Blender
      @MJ3D_Blender  Год назад

      Have you seen a channel called Marling Baits? He doesn't 3D print lures but hand builds them out of wood and metal. He often makes some bizarre lures, from king fishers to alien face huggers and he sees if he can catch on them. I used to fish and tie my own flies and make my own spoons when I was a kid but stopped fishing many years back. I go every now and again and it reminds me how much I miss it.
      I know exactly what you mean, I came the other way from mesh modelling to CAD. First thing I had to deal with was the language barrier, rotate is screw, fillet and chamfer are bevels. It's one reason why I put this channel together to allow for the transition either way and for me to force myself back into mesh modelling along side CAD as they compliment each other nicely.

    • @LebaneseAngler

      @@MJ3D_Blender Marling baits is the reason I make lures 😁
      I made many lures using fusion 360, I just don’t want to rely on a corporate based software if I decide to turn this into a business one day, I guess in the meantime I’ll stick with Fusion and learn blender on the side.
      I love fishing and making my own baits and other tools, I even started another youtube channel dedicated to making lures, it’s called “Lure Logic” if you wanna check it out.

    For some reason, when I did the Boolean part for the 2nd sketch, it ended up being the same size as the first sketch when I selected Union (without changing the measurements, but when I selected Intersect, I got the right size as you. However, If I select Fast for the solver and than Union, I get the right size. Any plans of doing an update video with Blender 4.0?

    Thank you for the detailed video! But unfortunately I've got some strange issues with it - CAD Sketcher Workplanes are not visible
    I can’t add a Sketch on a Workplane, because the Workplanes aren’t visible when I want to add a new Sketch. I use Blender 3.6.2 on a Mac Studio (2022) with M1.
    ill be very appreciate of any advice, thank you!

    • @MJ3D_Blender
      @MJ3D_Blender  Год назад

      I am thinking that you may not have your view centered where the x, y and z axis cross? When you first start blender you have the cube centered in the screen. If you move say off to the left then add a sketch then the work planes are off scene. Could this be the issue? Or you may be zoomed too far in.

    • @julia_aman
      @julia_aman Год назад

      Hi @MJ3D_Blender, thank you for your reply!
      I researched a little about this issue and found that other people have it too.
      "I have installed the add-on and PIP, however, I did see a message saying QWER Master is missing. Cad Sketcher does not show the axis planes.
      I would expect axis planes to be displayed."
      And there was a solution:
      "Maybe openGL/Metal issue? I just did a fresh installation of Blender 3.5.0 on an M2 Mac Ventura and had the same problem. Changing Edit>Preferences>System>GPU Backend to OpenGL fixed it for me."
      So I tried the same and changed the GPU Backend to OpenGL and now I can see axis planes. But it works normally on older Blender 3.1.2. The issue is on Blender 3.6.1.

      What you can do is go to preferences, system, than change it from metal to open GL. Should work after that, and I do not know why that fixes it but it does :)

    Does the Blender Sketcher have a History Tree???

    • @MJ3D_Blender
      @MJ3D_Blender  11 месяцев назад +1

      So the modifier stack can be used as editable parametric history per se as long as when adding the modifier you don't apply until the end which sets the modifier in stone and no longer editable. So adding a modifier such as solidify, mirror etc can be edited later but, say, when it comes to export modifiers have to be applied for the end result. Which I have a video in the series for which could help put this into visuals 😊

    hi there, you say CAD sketcher is not a full CAD package and not what is it intended for? Just curious what is it's intention and can I use it to design basic objects for 3d printing?

    • @MJ3D_Blender
      @MJ3D_Blender  5 месяцев назад +2

      Hi CAD sketcher is intended to give basic 2D sketching abilities to a direct modeller which then can be extruded into 3D. With a CAD package such as freecad, fusion 360 etc you get a full parametric modelling. The two direct and parametric are very different by design. You will see the ability to go back to your sketch and edit it will breakdown as the model gets complex. For simple models then this would be ok. It's similar to trying to create a image in a raster package (photoshop) vs creating the same image in a vector package (illustrator)
