So explanation time! In the original series Goku is more of a loveable goof, here they play up his stupidity, but he doesn't really become douchey until later on. And even then he never realizes how douchey he can actually be. As for the 'seeing Frieza in the shower naked' joke, Frieza is a villain which will show up in the next season! :D He was the one who killed the saiyans, and the few who survived were forced to work under his rule. Including Vegeta and Nappa. And a joke you'll see more of is "Whatever happened to Launch?" In the original Dragonball, she was a pretty big character, but you just about never saw her in Dragonball Z. When they asked the author, (Akira Toriyama), he confessed that he just forgot about her. XD Also, Goku was sent to earth as a baby to destroy it, but when an old man named Gohan found him and tried to raise Goku, Goku fell and hit his head, and subsequently lost his memory. So he didn't know that he was a saiyan until Dragonball Z, and his saiyan name is Kakarot. That's why Vegeta calls him Kakarot. Also, fun fact, Gokus son was also named after Grandpa Gohan!
Fun fact not brought up in the abridged: Goku learns about the monkey transforming thing right here, and Goku therefore finds out that he killed his own grandpa when he was a kid. Think on that for a kid's show.

The name "Son Goku" actually comes from an old Chinese story about a monkey king named Son Goku with a staff that could extend infinitely and I think a cloud he rode on (not sure about that last part) which Goku was based on. This fact becomes very clear if you watched the original Dragonball. Anyway, my point is that his name is most likely Chinese not Japanese. Not that it matters, the Japanese are more or less Chinese immigrants anyway if you look at their history. They originally travelled to Japan from china through Japan's southern islands which is why their cultures and written languages have so many similarities.

Kakarot is Goku's birth (real) name while Goku's is the name Grandpa Gohan gave him when he found Kakarot/Goku as a baby.
Before Season 2 you could try reacting to DBZ Kai Abridged Episode 1, which is basically an abridged version of the First season of DBZ Abridged.
