Something about his chords, his touch on the keys....just SOMETHING about Robert Glasper's playing can move a grown man to tears....on the real.
I’m a huge Nirvana fan but I never expected this. Wow. Just beautiful.
This cover gives me chills I can’t explain, Kurt would’ve loved this.
😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😣🥰
It sounds soo rich with just 2 instruments, great take!
exactly my thoughts
That's harmony baby
When only 2 are needed, to completely blow the original away.
I agree
Sometimes it’s easy to forget what a wonderful upright bass player Derrick Hodge is. Wish he’d play it more often!
IT'S IMPOSSIBLE TO FORGET
The chord he throws in at 1:53 kills me everytime...
Kyle Patton chromatisms rulez
Gotta love those picardy thirds hahahaha Mozart for the win
Kyle Patton Chills, man.....chills....
Dope.... Heard it the second time out...
+Kyle Patton that was too smooth though.
Robert's chord progression is so colorful and rich. You can't help follow his harmonic melodic feeling and expression. He plays from the depths of his soul. "He is a talented arranger. And Derrick Hodge knows how to fill in the right areas, on the acoustic bass viola. Awesome. "👌👌👌👌😊
This was unexpected and a beautiful rendition of an iconic song.
Stunning!
Robert really evokes / illuminates the sorrow of this record. Stunning.
+DigitalDharma Absolutely, well said.
The bass player beating on the upright gives the piece that extra bit of percussiveness. Very thought out and executed perfectly. 1:19 , 1:55 , 2:20 , the ending, so many great parts to this.
Some tasteful ghost notes on his part
Shame on me for not discovering Robert Glasper sooner. What a terrific talent.
What a soulful duo. Those chord voicings are CRAZY rich.
I LOVE the Nirvana version but this sounds absolutely HEAVENLY!!!!
+ whoami tou - do you know the acoustic version of patti smith? not bad either...
A piddling little thumbs-up doesn't cover how much I love this guy- an irresistible combo of technical brilliance and emotional depth the likes of which we haven't see since Bill Evans-
this version is a dear friend of mine...
thank you very much for this, it has accompanied me in many moments in the past years
you know it's a great tribute when it makes you think of the original song and composer.
Goat bone , Absolutely true.❤
When I hear this song, I close my eyes and imagine I'm in a house in hills of Los Angeles, with a view of the city at sunset.Just beautiful.
I think 100 views are from me alone. This is simply incredible. His interpretation of this song is truly enlightening!!!!
Smells like smooth jazz , great work
Robert's cover of smells like teens spirit really captures, to me at least, the tragedy behind the song in a really beautiful and honest way. Although I am such a fan of the album version, it is amazing how present that sentiment is here.
you summed it up perfectly. I wept when I first heard this. What a massive talent Kurt was. R.I.P
Robert is one of those musician's that when you see him, you either want to take the instrument up, or give it up.
Oh yes! He's made me fall in love with jazz all over again!
Actually, I just want to shake his hand and say "thank you"......
Yesssss
Absolutely...!!! Or perhaps find a transcription of his rendition!
Don Cheadle actually was a young jazz musician once upon a time and realized he wasn't meant to be a musician when he met Robert, or maybe it was Christian Mcbride
Can't stop hearing this brotha.
Glasper needs to release this version for fans to purchase.
It already is... Almost this
I love every chord, every note melts my heart and my ears and mind rejoice. Discovering that music is like food essential for life. ♥️🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼🎶♥️
Captured the essence of this MASTERFUL piece, while honoring your individual styles. BEAUTIFUL
Somehow I return to this take each and every year. Thanks for the magic!
If there is a better musical artist out there...one who has the talent, soul and depth of Glasper...I haven't found them yet.
+Teresa Trunzo Dave Grohl comes pretty close.
no, cory henry is, technically a better musician. imo
+Ginger Wagner LOLLLL
+Nemaia Toimata maybe a better player but musician.......I think they are tied 😊⭐️🔥💯
technically and as a soloist Cory is crazy. as a composer though i think robert is better haha
Breathingly beautiful musical delivery.
I can't even find a better adjective. This was delicious to listen to.
Exactly
Getting a hug from your mom after you just bawled your eyes out when you were young and really sad and upset about something, or a fresh hot meal prepared by your grandparents. Adjectives are hard, analogies are easier!
Well done! A soulful peace which is not swayed by the noise of rock! Beautiful.... rather it harmonizes everything!
Still as beautiful as the first time I heard it 10 years ago ❤️🔥
Similar feelings.
Absolutely the most brilliant rielaboration ever made. Kurt would be very proud.
The way he phrases the chorus' melody, with the slight "clanging bells" vibe, reminded me of Ethan Iverson's essay (on his 'Do the Math' blog) called "Red's Bells". Among the things that Iverson discusses in that piece is the sonic link between bells, African music, and jazz pianists like Red Garland and, a little later, McCoy Tyner.
Damn, that seamless tradeoff from the keys to the bass carrying the verse melody
Musical genius
I salute you sir
1:19 - That passing chord tho!! And then at 2:20 onwards he takes it even further out!!! BEAST!
Bro he laid a few passing chords on this jawn. And that transition at 2:20 mad crayz bro on bass laid that soul on that piece
I love how everyone appreciates the beautiful and is brought together by it.
One of the most purest comment sections I've ever seen.
THIS IS INSANELY GOOD, I CANT EVEN!!!!
For anyone wondering, 'that' chord at 1:53 is called a tierce de picardie (or picardy third) and is basically when you substitute a minor chord with a major chord in a minor progression
thank you so much for explaining !
yes..so powerful...thats chord!
...Yeah, what he said!
I thought picardy third was when you finish a minor song with a major tonic
@@OnurYemisen musical section so it doesn't necessarily have to be the end of the song
wow yall were right about that chord what a satisfying chill down the spine that is
I love listening to him play, the music does he plays. When my Lupus is tearing me down and I feel like I want to cry I listen to his music. It's relaxes my body and soul.
He is very talented artist and he's the first artist that I ever have a crush on. He has made music with many talented artists that I like, Jill Scott ,Soulchild, Erykah Badu and that's just to name a few...... I pour me a glass of wine my back in my chair and turn on his music...
You should try the carnivore diet
@@CTPH-77 BROO HAHAHA
So soothing yes
Prayers for you..
Wow, the voicings on some of those chords are so rich and unusual! Not to mention his inhumanly perfect touch and timing!
All I can say is wow! Now that is music.
You a real one if you're watching in 2019
@Palindromeda 33 a real cool person
I'm a real one
This Man is a Freaking Genius!! All I have to see is his name and I’m instantly ready to experience another tantalizing musical experience.... that I usually play about 5 times consistently.
I love how he throws his hands off at the end. Like, he knows it's done. It's complete. It didn't need anymore. Perfect.
So beautifull! Makes me cry
The chord at 1:55 ... Lordy lord
yes!
I keep going back to it.
that chord gives me shivers
And it's so simple. He just makes a minor chord a major. But it's so beautiful! It's not what you play, it's how you play it.
Dmaj7
I still come back to this one song and get chills constantly...
hearing the best of Robert Glasper making the kind of music to enjoy
Just an astonishing and moving piece.
One of the best piano sound I've ever heard, so nice !
That's how you cover a song! No vocals but it still sings for the same purpose
Lovely put
Beautiful, this took my mind to a place that made eyes water.
Some credit here to the fantastic CAMERA work, also. Visually STUNNING !!
This guy has serious talent keep an eye on him.
Never would imagined hearing this song this way. I've always loved this song but, this version has me emotional ♥
I usually don't like slow versions covers of this song, they never work but this is definetely an exception, that was pretty good
found this cd at radio station i work at. to bad they dont play this kind of music. youre a true artist. keep it up.
Other than this comment, I'm speechless.
Likewise
Where oh where could I go to hear live music like this?? I live near the Berklee School. I guess I just have to move into the Performance Center and just live there.
This takes me to a different place! Such magical melody from Mr. Glasper
Very bluesy, wow. Love it.
i still listen to this at least once a week
this is fucking ridiculous. i cant even, this is so good.
Y’all talking about the chord at 1:55 I’m stuck on that passing chord sequence at 2:45
I'm with you on this. The maj7 at 1:55 sounds a bit wonky to me but the arpeggio you mention is awesome!
@@josephtravers777 I like the color added at 1:55
@@jasminedakota3958 that's cool. I'm writing a piano piece when I'm not here and it's pretty wonky! lol :)
Fake music theory nerd taln bout how cool a basic harmony concept is and then theres jazz harmony
Terry Williams 2:21 2:28
I love this dude. I can listen to this dude all day
Brilliant. Absolute brilliance.
This sounds like part of the OST of some melancholic 90s anime
So beautiful. Such a mood.
Makes me feel like breathing deeply and holding my breath at the same time.
I’m in love with this cover… IN LOVE!!!!
I wish he could put this version on iTunes ! I want this so bad !!!!!!!!! This pure musicianship , I play drums & sing now learning to play piano and this is a dream come true to a musician !
2:20 - relief, or rather a warmth engaging your soul.
this is better than the album version. #TeamRobertGlasper
Why is youtube showing me a 6 year old video?
*listens to video*
Why did youtube not show me this back in 2013?
Yep i agree .
Somehow I'm still happy to have bumped into it , cool version for me
@Fran Cesco yes .
I agree 100 %
We on the same thought 😃👊🏿
Did you note that it was posted by Robert Glasper? Why don't YOU ask HIM why HE waited? Whoops! He posted it EIGHT YEARS ago! Someone doesn't know how the RUclips algorithm operates.
This is Dope on so many levels. As a fellow instrumentalist, I approve this arrangement. 👌🏾
beautiful sound wonderful piano
This is better than his album version. More raw and emotional. No amount of electronics can produce that, though still good.
Nivana did it but this right here is heavenly and beautiful... love Mr. R Glasper
Bravo RG and DH!! Well done guys what a rendition!!! I just had to come back and listen to greatness! Big up Robert Glasper and Derrick Hodge!
This proves music is color blind and borderless 🏆
Speechless. This is the apotheosis of divine sound.
This is just beautiful.
this is incredble and I remember seeing the video of this in 92
Caught a bit of this off beato’s RUclips channel and LOVE IT
So beautiful & passionate... I swear I shed a tear!
This is so moving and beautiful 🖤
that shit cray!!! it dont get NO better than that. im so glad thse guys got a grammy!
Peaceful. Makes me think. Puts my mind on a journey.
Obviously I could not be more impressed than I am after listening to this... incredible version, you are an example for all as a musician!!
Absolutely genius!!!oh my Lord the guy is really gifted!!!God bless!!
Talented to the core! lovely
They are simply amazing. How else can you actually improve on a classic like this?
At first it was a brilliant jazzy "Smells like teen Spirit" and I could feel that intense, revolution and enthusiasm but later they fell into jazz. Yet this is beautiful cover :)
I just LOVE this !!! I play it over and over and over ! Beautiful !!!
Glaspar has such beautiful touch and feel
Anyone else who kept waiting for him to start singing?
Sublime rendition - was this recording ever released? Would love this in lossless; the Black Radio version is fantastic, but this pared down version is too soulful
Can't get enough ... AMAZING!
Phenomenal! I love his interpretation of this song.
