My take on the meaning of the song is that the speaker doesn't believe that he deserves to be as happy as he is in the relationship that he's in. He's not ready to accept that he can be happy. Yet. He's hoping that eventually he'll be able to reconcile that and she will still be there to welcome him back into "paradise"
