This was soooooooo helpful!!! I just bought a buttonholer off FB marketplace and was so overwhelmed. You broke it down so lovely!!! Any recommendations on knowing how /when to oil the attachment??
I’m so glad it helped!! For oiling, I would suggest the following: When: - If you’ve not used it for a while, or if you plan on storing it for a while (to prevent moisture from damaging the metal components) - If you notice your buttonholer heating up during use (some warmth will be expected due to the rapid movement of the attachment, but if it feels hot, the metal inside the unit may be seizing or galling. A little oil will resolve this) - If your stitches appear less uniform How: - Use any sewing machine oil; nothing fancy - Take a few drops of oil on a cloth and rub it into the metal joints and screw threads (you can also add drops of oil directly onto the surface, but I would remove the excess with a cloth so that the oil doesn’t come off on your fabric when sewing) - Occasionally oil the screw plate the same way Happy sewing!!
Thank you Morgan! I have my mother's 1960 singer machine with a button holer. Had to make a button hole in a pinch and watched this video. You saved the day!
Last night, I discovered that my Singer 328K is capable of far more than I thought...it can do zigzagging, and all kinds of fancy stitches! Then, today, I stumbled across this buttonholer at a thrift store for $2. Just made my first buttonholes. Magic, thanks to you! Super easy to follow.
@@rndea100 It works very well. Sizing is easy using the dies provided. The biggest problem I have (and experience will fix this) is placing the buttonhole in the correct place!
Hi Morgan, I have a new-to-me 401A which is my favorite machine. I was in a thrift store and found a buttonholer like the one you have, for $5.00, which I immediately bought, since getting these old accessories is problematic at times. I had no idea how these things worked, but thanks for giving me the confidence to try my new tool a try!!!
Hi Susan! I’m afraid without actually seeing your buttonhole attachment in operation I can’t offer much guidance. That said, you could try some basic troubleshooting like checking the stitch length along the side to ensure it’s not set on “N,” and checking that the attachment is securely fixed to the needle pin nob. Best of luck!

You are most welcome! I’m absolutely thrilled to hear that 😊
The Singer # 401 uses the Singer "Professional" buttonholer. This has the widest variety of buttonholes and is suited for a zigzag sewing machine.
