One of the most thorough reviews I have seen for this great vehicle! I purchased a 2017 about a month ago and absolutely love it! The Fob holder in the console provides a way to use the vehicle when the battery in the Fob is dead and is used when programming new Fobs--a very time consuming process, BTW. There is a key in the Fob where you can unlock the door when Fob battery is dead. There are also 2 more USB ports in the area underneath the shifter.
I love this vehicle. I cannot afford a new one so this is definitely a model that I will have to look for. I must have the heated and cooling seats so I would probably have to buy this trim level!

It should be a backup way to start the car if the battery dies in the fob. It should sit in place there in that "hole"
