Part 9 of Hamilton has already ratcheted things up to such a level that Act II is looking like it’s going to be a blast!! 😤🔥 Anyway just like with the previous videos, RUclips was shooting me like Aaron Burr over the music AND the visuals - in fact even more than in some previous cases hence the wait - so I had to make some cuts to the songs & cover it with text (this was the least intrusive editing method I could find that they’d accept). I posted the entire intact reaction (full songs, no text covering the visuals etc.) on my patreon here www.patreon.com/posts/115400010 if you’re interested, but if not I’d suggest pulling up the soundtrack & playing it own your own so you can hear the INSANITY of what I’m hearing in full lol.
PLEASE DO NOT SPOIL MAJOR PLOT POINTS IN YOUR COMMENTS (or at least start your comment with "spoilers" so I know to avoid it)! It takes away the point of future reactions if you just tell me everything that happens later so instead let me experience it during the process of watching Hamilton myself. I have moderators who are scanning the comments & deleting spoilery comments so don’t leave spoilers cause it will just get removed anyways. Lastly if you see others leaving comments that include spoilers please reply to it indicating that it has spoilers so I know not to read it, thank you in advance.
Anyways make sure to check out the other parts here ruclips.net/video/iX-kYiFEEvY/видео.html & subscribe not to miss future parts! 🦁❤💛

Hamilton vs Jefferson was based in the on going States rights vs Federal Rights. Before the revolutionary war, each state had their own currency and finance, including issuing their own currency as well as using British money. Hamilton's plan was to make all the money issued by and handled by federal authority.
Just like when Europe went to euros, it's not always a smooth transition and many didn't want it.
Jefferson fought for states to maintain as many rights and authority as possible. Hamilton wanted the nation federally to be more in control.

History - what I do - but not spoiling. Madison coughing: Madison was actually about 5'4" and 100-and-nothing, was considered sickly his whole life...though he lived well into his 80's.
What Hamilton is trying to do is take all the debt run up by each state during the revolution - debt that would rightfully have been the country's debt (paying for a war) - in theory - if we'd had the Constitution back then and not the Articles of Confederation. Obviously, states that had paid off their debt already weren't as keen on it (and Virginia, being the most populous state at the time, had a lot of power in the House of Representatives, which this Bill would have to pass..."you don't have the votes"...). And he thought it would sweeten up those states with debts for his other ideas (allegedly).
Jefferson (and a lot of others) thought the perfect state of balance would be paying off all national debt (which was a significant amount at the time, assuming Hamilton found the votes). Hamilton had an idea - well ahead of his time (NOT a spoiler) - that keeping a manageable national debt kept longterm sources of funding available (and not subject to the taxing and spending whims of any specific political moment), at reasonable, and theoretically stable interest rates for the nation and business, supports the currency...which gets into the National Bank and a lot of boring financial stuff. But it really was smart and ahead of his time.
Jefferson also thought people should live rurally on farms, and be self-sufficient, and didn't think the federal government had the right - under the Constitution - to spend money on internal improvements...and then he bought the Louisiana Purchase. So go figure.

@@AmariLeone not just the same old songs. Specifically Jefferson sings a jazz like song. Because Jazz is a contribution to the creation of hip hop. Then when Jefferson adapts & starts rapping, his rap style is more indicative of early hip hop influences. He quotes The Message by Grand Master Flash. Where as Hamilton’s rap style is more modern, with internal rhyme schemes. In My Shot he quotes Prodigy & Mobb Deep. He spells his name in a Biggie cadence & 10 Duel Commandments is a direct reference to 10 Rap Commandments. Jefferson thinks in a more traditional, status quo way while Hamilton is pushing towards a future, because his past sucked.

Fun facts time! You point out the genre right away for What Did I Miss and you’re totally right that it’s veeeeery different than anything we’ve had so far. This was actually intentionally done for some great metaphorical reasons! Jefferson’s style when he makes his entrance is in the jazz/swing vein, which is the historical musical precursor to r&b and rap. The overall intention here is to show that Jefferson is “behind” on what’s being going on in the infant country- they’ve been moving forward into rap and r&b, while he’s still singing jazz/boogiewoogie 😅

@AmariLeone I love names so much. Language the development of it how it crosses across borders how it all of it... I can go on quite a bit about it. What I wanted to say though is I used to work at a test center as a proctor, and I would meet people from everywhere, and there's nothing more beautiful than having your name spoken correctly. The Key and Peele skit with the teacher who says all the white people's names wrong, I may have mentioned it before in a previous video I don't know, but it felt like vindication for all the kids I grew up with in a southern school who had to put up with their names being butchered over and over and over again over the years. So I tried, long story short, to get names correctly pronounced anytime I had someone with an interesting name coming in. And I would usually do the paperwork for the next day so I would see the names ahead of time. I can still remember two of the names I was proudest of on getting right on the first try, and seeing this look of amazement cost their face and think thanking me and it was I just loved it anyway I'm rambling the two names are: Altanzul and Kanafani, both of which I had multiple options ready to fly with, emphasis on different syllables and everything. I got both right on the very first try. Altanzul is a Mongolian name, Kanafani is Ethiopian. There is a German name once too that I got right on the first try, that gentleman looked like he almost had a tear come to his eye, I wish I could remember that one. It had like six syllables. I practiced it a bunch the day before. Hoping I had the right pronunciation worked out.
I also didn't want to be that annoying person who asked things insensitively, and so I would get a person's vibe talk to them and then ask or sometimes I would surprise people by just saying their name when it was time for them to go get checked in for their test, but I tried to always be sensitive of the fact that they probably get people talking about their name in a negative way a lot. I ended up having some very interesting discussions about words and language and names.
One gentleman who would immigrated here to the States, got effed over by the people in immigration when they combined his first and last name into one name and made that his first name, and then his last name I've blocked it out and made me so mad but I think it was something ridiculous like "not given" straight out of the movie Idiocracy honestly It was so enraging that he had to live with this and get all his IDs done with this because the process to fix his name was so costly and difficult. I made sure to call him by his correct name anytime I saw him. He had multiple tests he had to take.
Rambling! I need to go look for those dance clips!

As someone who's first name is a VERY uncommon Italian name (I go by my middle name with non-family & in public like on youtube in part for this very reason) the Key & Peele skit (which yes we talked about in a previous comment) was EARTH SHATTERING in how cathartic it was. It wasn't even funny at that point, just paradigm shifting.

For anyone who may potentially see this(and care), my dad informed me a while back that Jefferson's laugh and and cadence when he says "Such a blunder, sometimes it makes me wonder why I even bring the thunder" is a reference(clear as day, now that I've heard the song) to The Message by Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, the first big conscious rap song(Hamilton is like that in a lot of ways, though, my mom told me Ten Duel Commandments was a reference to a Biggie song called Ten Crack Commandments, which is more common knowledge)
Hamilton is like two concurrent history lessons, and it really pays its due to its role as a hip-hop musical!

Also, the policy they're debating is that Hamilton wants to start the Federal Reserve and start printing a national currency. Prior to this, each state had its own currency and its own financial market. Things to note from “What Did I Miss?”: Jefferson says “Sally, be a lamb…” a reference to Sally Hemings, one of his slaves, with whom Jefferson had six children. In an ironic note, as he’s riding in the carriage to meet Madison, he says he admires the rolling fields, and revels in the fact that they are finally free…ignoring the fact that those fields are filled with slaves. The references to Madison’s health: Madison was not a well man through much of his life, including a seizure disorder which may have been epilepsy, but he also had multiple serious fevers and illnesses, which might have been recurring malaria. Despite this, he lived a long life, and died at 85.

    • @nicf6761
      @nicf6761 2 месяца назад +3

Yeah - Lin is 110% being ironic here by putting these words into a slaver’s mouth, and highlighting the brutal irony of a slaver delighting in how “we are free” by having those words performed by an actor whose own heritage (on glorious display in THIS role with his magnificent fro) would have had him well and truly caught out by the same “one drop” rule which made Sally Hemings (Jefferson’s white wife’s half sister) into her own family’s slave (and Jefferson’s sex slave).

    • @matthewarend7197

Great reactions as always. One thing that nobody else has mentioned, is that the entirety of 'what'd I miss?' background dance choreography was changed in the live shows, apparently quite a lot, after 2020. I'd love to get to see it. Also, when they were first developing the choreography for that number they asked Daveed what he can do in terms of dancing. He said 'I'm a rapper' and showed that little fun step that they built the number around it.

    History nerd here -
The Jefferson/Hamilton philosophical divide not only created the 1st 2 political parties but defined the main divide for our entire history.
Jefferson favored a rural, agrarian, populist, state power, (pro slavery), and no barriers to trade (so South could trade their cotton).
Hamilton favored urban, industrial, elitist, strong central government, anti-slavery, and with trade barriers (so American businesses would not be undercut by cheaper European manufactured goods.

    • @sportstalkryan
      @sportstalkryan 2 месяца назад +14

And the subject of the debate -
During the war, the Congress issued a LOT of debt. Afterwards, a lot of the political leaders were in favor of defaulting on it, because paying it off would require collecting a LOT of taxes, and they had just fought a war where taxes was a major issue.
Hamilton proposed that we had to pay back the debt because then the government would be able to issue more debt when needed. Otherwise no one (meaning New York banks and European countries) would take us seriously and lend us any money. It would also set the precedent of having the federal government, and not each individual state, be the issuer of new debt as bank notes (which was the primary form of currency in this era).
The problem, people who had initially bought the debt assumed it wouldn’t be paid back and had sold it to speculators for pennies, and they would be furious to have those speculators make a killing off of their financial loss. And those people were yelling at their Congressional representatives.
So Jefferson wanted to default on the debt, screw the financial speculators, and avoid issuing new taxes. And Hamilton wanted the opposite, which would also increase federal governmental power.

I always thought that the “too many pages” line was one of Lin’s references to modern politics, there’s at least one more wink that I can remember that’s coming up. Anyway, I think it was the Affordable Care Act that would have been approved around the time Lin was writing, about which opponents said it’s too many pages to understand.

10:37 You are exactly spot on with your assessment - “missed the late 80s” is a direct reference to the music genre of his song being the influence of the genre of music of the other songs, meaning that he’s out of step with the other characters, having been away during the war. It’s a brilliant catch on your part. Well reasoned!!

First, let me echo those who thank you for this today. Starting to heal my heart.
Second, you are not at all insane, you are INSIGHTFUL. "What'd I Miss?" is performed over boogie-woogie piano, and evokes the origins of jazz as the grandfather of rap. It is meant to reflect the fact that Jefferson was older than Hamilton and his contemporaries and feel out of step with the rest of the musical, reflected in Daveed's choreography as he's running to catch up with the newly formed American sensibilities as opposed to the European ones he has been living with all this time in France.
(The song also includes riffs on other Dixieland jazz sounds, such as stride and ragtime to evoke where Jefferson is from and that he's a slave-owning planter.)
Miranda's use of hip-hop, jazz, and R&B in "Hamilton" is intended to make history more relatable to a contemporary audience, AND these are forms of music that are DISTINCTLY and UNIQUELY American.
