      The Wheel Thing from Super Mario World. Now let me try to give a "spoiler free" explanation about why I believe this a "dark toon". We know Mario as this "light hearted plumber" However, I can speak from experience that this has subtle dark undertone. Especially with the lime delivery from the Koopaling featured in this episode to its overall premise...Trust me on this. The FIRST MINUTE is enough to give you CHILLS! Can't reccomend it enough! I'll leave a link below. Though word of advice...Don't watch tis in the dark!

    • @GreyWolfLeaderTW
      @GreyWolfLeaderTW 2 года назад

      @@sketchs_art_corner Walt couldn't have done such a thing. Throughout his lifetime, most people forget this, but Walt Disney Studios was a fairly small operation. People forget the monolithic company that exists today is largely the result of decades of accrued money resultant from the Theme Parks the company owns and which did not make much money until after Walt's lifetime.
      Walt and his studio made fairly thin margins of money on the theatrical shorts and films (many of his animated films bombed financially in their first runs, only starting to make returns after their second or third re-release to theaters), and not only that, but Walt was not popular with the Hollywood press. He did not wield the kind of power with the Hollywood establishment people would expect him to, in spite of how large and powerful the company that bears his name has become.
      His unpopularity was because Walt was a fervent anti-communist (and also anti-fascist, see Der Fuherer's Face (1943) for an example of his opposition to totalitarian political philosophies) and Hollywood was a hotbed of Marxist ideology in the 1930s and 1940s. The House Un-American Activities Committee (which people mistakenly think Joseph McCarthy led but he couldn't because he was a senator and the *HOUSE* Un-American Activities Committee was a House of Representatives committee) called Walt in as a witness, and he demonstrated how Herb Sorrell, an open communist and leader of infamous Hollywood labor unions, including a cartoonist union that ran strikes against Walt Disney's company, was a communist front man who acted on behalf of the Soviets, alongside other notable and infamous people who would be blacklisted later on.
      The Fleischer Brothers were at least as famous as Walt during their time, and the Warner Brothers shorts would become more financially successful than Walt's company during the mid-1940s.

    You should actually do "Bimbo's Initiation." Also, I appreciate the connection you made between this and Cuphead, but I was surprised you didn't mention the connection between this and Bendy and the Ink Machine, which definitely took inspiration from Fleischer's cartoons, especially with the actual Bendy shorts that they made for the game. I've seen a couple on RUclips, and even Hot Topic, and I can definitely see the Fleischer-style animation in them.

      He's said that he makes a point to try to avoid saying things he's seen in other uploaders' videos, and pretty sure he's seen the Game Theory vids that talked about that link. If you haven't, I definitely think you'll enjoy them.

    • @SamM6599
      @SamM6599 4 года назад +2

      @@Imspammedout I have seen them. I've seen almost all of them. But the comparison itself shouldn't be something he avoids. I made the connection between the game and these old cartoons when I first saw the game. Obviously, based on Bendy's design, he's supposed to be similar to Mickey Mouse, but I saw Bimbo's Initiation a couple of months before the trailer for the game came out and noticed Mickey locks Bimbo in a sewer, so I figure maybe this was supposed to be a horror parody of the Fleischer cartoons, and sure enough, it was. But I'm sure I wasn't the only one to make the connection. Especially after the animated Bendy shorts came out (though I'm not sure exactly when those came out, and whether it was before or after the release of the first chapter). So as far as comparing it, I don't think he should worry. Besides, Markiplier, just to name one uploader, made the connection between the game and Disney like all of the people who saw that game made. So just stating it shouldn't be a problem. Going into a long explanation about it would be another thing. Not saying he should though. Just surprised he made the connection to Cuphead and not Bendy. 🤷‍♂️😂

      YES!! This episode legit scared me as a kid! Like, a lot of Courage the Cowardly Dog episodes were disturbing, but only a handful of them genuinely scared me, and this was one of them. And I feel like compared to most other episodes, this one actually took its time in trying to scare the audience moreso than tell jokes, it was pretty intense.

    Warner Brothers did a tribute to the Fleischer "moving background" trope in an episode of Animaniacs. Yakko, Wakko and Dot find themselves on a street where everything is black and white and the buildings have eyes, and they even comment on it.
    That whole bit about the character getting trapped in a surreal setting where none of the laws of nature work (not even to the extent that they work in the "normal" cartoon universe) is what makes the whole "descent into Toontown" sequence in "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" work.

    • @glowworm2
      @glowworm2 4 года назад +1

      Yes! The episode in question is called "The Girl with the Googily Goop" a parody towards Betty Boop. It's amazing--I love their digs at the moving objects. My favorite gag is when Wakko gets frightened by a talking mailbox and whispers something to Yakko. "Why didn't you take care of that before the cartoon started?" "I did, but this place is scaring the "you know whats" right out of me." Dot then tells him that he doesn't need to go to the potty. "I don't?" "Nah, in these cartoon, the potty comes to you." Sure enough, a toilet with eyes is seen walking towards them. "I'm on my way to Flushing!" the toilet announces.
      Oh, and at one point when Yakko starts singing a song revolving around Googie, the writers somehow got away with him singing "Heidi Heidi Heidi Fleiss" In the manner of Cab Callaway. Heidi Fleiss is an American former madam.

      I can think of a few things on about not to mess up a story. Understand the characters and how they relates to the plot and premise that you came up with. Establish the tone in the first a few words or a few images and carry them throughout your story. Finally, read from the masters of the craft so you can experiment and find your own voice in storytelling.

    Halloween is Grinch Night could make for a good episode. The wild surreal art and how the music swells leading to the ending of that special has stayed with me and probably lots of other people over the years.

    I'm an older viewer (64) but still remember a Looney Tunes, Daffy Duck short that was pure nightmare fuel when I was a kid. It's called "The Great Piggy Bank Robbery" with Daffy playing DucK Tracy. It has such an unusual and dark tone that for years I thought I just dreamed I had seen it when I was a little kid, but then I saw it again and HOLY CRAP! it was as disturbing as I remembered.
    Just thought you might like to take a look at it for your series.

    I'm glad that you brought up the fact that those old cartoons shown in movie theaters were meant for adults as well as children. I was young woman when the USA got the idiotic notion that cartoons were ONLY for children. I spent so many years gritting my teeth at cut versions of cartoons I'd seen uncut when I was a child or newer shows that were watered down because violence wasn't something kids should be seeing.
