I enjoyed this teaser. It's a play I like very much, and I wonder why it isn't done more often. Yes, I found the exposition very clear.

Such a brilliant play and was a joy to direct! What I’d do to be Mr Doran’s shoes when the RSC is alive and kicking

Vincentio is the most controversial Duke in any play attributed to Shakespeare. He's generally played unsympathetically nowadays, but I really like him. He will do anything to reform Vienna without shedding blood.

Agreed! I think he's one of the most Machiavellian Shakespeare characters, up there with Richard III. I chose his 'be absolute for death' speech for my drama school audition. It's a very underrated speech.

Probably the most instantly forgettable Shakespeare play.

You would have thought a Director of the ability, class and elegance of Gregory Doran, could tell the tale with a bit more expression and less monotone, or is this unfair? Oh for the inspiration of another great Shakespearian Director like Jeremy Lemmon of Harrow , who inspired and discovered the Cumberbitch and insists that the magic of the Elizabethian costumes, movements adn settings raises Shakespeare's plays to a new dimension, transduced by todays RSC who prefer to go "modern", ie drab and almost monotone. Will, must be spinning in his grave!

Don’t know who Doran is, but he doesn’t seem monotone at all to me. I’d love to listen to him talk more.
