Love your "how I did it" disclaimer. The "desoldering" was so terrible, like field work with no stores nearby to get a desoldering bulb or wire wicks. Reminded me of my youth trying to borrow parts off old boards to make a new circuit.

Very interesting. These plugs have some very powerful microcontrollers in, and you could in theory get them to do some interesting stuff with the local network if you know what you were doing. I wonder if anyone has dumped the original firmware to see whether it can do any "network exploration" and phone home with the results?

I'm leaning towards hoping someone has designed a smart plug from available components that I can just shove in a box. Looks interesting though

Sonoff has some ready to shove in a box models, insert wall power and screw it down and it'll switch a relay. Can run wall power through the relay or let it switch 5vdc or whatever you want like a relay. Most items from Sonoff are easily to upgrade to an open source firmware.
