EDIT: Reggie mentioned that Nike was the first to deliver on the first non-athlete collab from a major sports apparel brand. In fact this is an error. Jay-Z came through with the first sneakers in a collab with Reebok and Run DMC actually had an Adidas collection in the 80's. Due to the limited nature of both releases they were overlooked here BUT first is first so shout out to Oscar Lopez for pointing this out! Give him several likes for his knowledge!

Daniel Medford it’s always been like this but now it’s the information stage. Before you had to be on it and know the drop dates. You had to do research in the early days of the internet. And if you were from the hood you’d have to be able to be ready to fight for your sneakers or have a rep that protected you from getting robbed. Now everyone has access and everyone wants to be cool. I would say sneaker culture has pretty much trended in the same direction as rap culture. It was very niche back then, now everyone is a sneakerhead. It’s good and bad.

My biggest gripe is that nobody wanted the Spiderman 1s UNTIL they found out they were the Spiderman 1s. Also, I knowww people don't like Air Max '90s that much and I already know I'm taking an L on Thursday with the Off-------------White drop.

Dude this. Like I was one of the few that actually liked the shoe, and when everyone was trashing on it, I was like cool, my chance to cop is gonna be high. But then all of a sudden, EVERYONE wanted the kicks. Yes im salty that I couldn't get a pair.😑

Meh -- clickbait title. This is the way of every market, every brand, period. Literally no different than top fashion houses enlisting new designers every 4-5 years, it's collaboration. Same scenario as when Nike backs a designer and gives them a shoe, or a mini collection, or their own sub-line. At the end of the day, every brand must have a motive of money -- that's survival -- artists want to showcase their work to society at large, they need an audience to not only convey their innovation and uniqueness to an audience but to actually thrive artistically. Given the fact that Nike still has such an emphasis on the values they portray to society at large (risky marketing campaigns that seek to stand at the right side of history), is acknowledgeable and should be applauded - no brand has the balls or claws to do that.
Our entire consumer economy is built on hype at this point -- iPhone's today? Hype. Cars? Hype. Social Media is all hype -- it's late stage capitalism in its prime -- classism at its max. We see, we absorb, we purchase into subcultures - to share our values and interests with those around us, to become apart of a community within a capitalistic system that prioritizes individuality.

I haven’t bought a pair of Nikes, Jordans, or adidas since 2012. I used to dig Nikes growing up, but I eventually hit a point where I just over them. I was never a Jordan person, and adidas was always just kind of in the background for me. Plus I’ve always liked having obscure stuff that nobody else had bc everybody wears Nikes. But all the stuff you talked about I saw coming from a mile away. And anytime I spoke about what was happening with this whole “culture” I’d get labeled as a hater. But here we are now. The game is so over saturated, but people keep buying stuff anyways. All that to say, I appreciate you shedding light on this.
