When I was learning to write in Japanese, I was advised to use a fountain pen; the way you have to use strokes is apparently much more similar to calligraphy than how you use a normal ballpoint pen (especially in cursive), so it's easier to learn. I use a ballpoint pen now, but the way I do strokes is still a bit different than when I write in English.

When I was in school we used ink and steel nib pens. then switched after a year ( when we could write somewhat legibly) to pencil, and ballpoint pens. Still have a Rotring pen set around, used to do technical drawing, where the permanent lines were in ink, while pretty much all of the rest were in assorted pencil hardnesses. Don't think any school though has a TD class any more though, it went the way of the Dodo as well, like the fountain pen.

In Germany we used steel nib pens too because the teachers said ballpoint pens would be bad for the handwriting. I still have mine somewhere here.

I kept thinking "Don't be using iron gall ink, don't be using iron gall ink, that stuff is slow-burning evil--" and then you showed the Winsor and Newton bottle. Sigh of relief. But, has Keith done any Chinese calligraphy? I notice he holds his pen the same way I do--resting on the knuckle of his ring finger. This is 'verboten' in traditional handwriting manuals, but it's precisely how you hold a calligraphy brush (which I found out by accident in university when my Chinese professor had us try some and all I had to do was tip my pen up rather than change grip).

3:05 made me think. The nib's the most important part of the pen, so I'm not sure about saying the pen itself is old if the nib's been changed.
A bit nit-picky, I know, but with a dip pen you can still (not comfortably) write with just the nib and not the holder, but without the nib the holder is just a block of wood.

Ironically I am watching this while inking a comic page : D - with a dip pen and ink. This... got me so excited and I cry a bit the way you dip that poor pen in. Its weird how no matter what you do - with a certain size audience you will have somebody who is an expert in whatever you're doing. (I am NOT an expert, but very used to pen and ink - but i am really bad at calligraphy!).
I wonder why Keith gave you non waterproof ink - just because its a practice sheet? Or are those priceless signatures actually done in non-waterproof ink? There are inks that need a bit air drying to get their final color / water resistant.
Thank you, Brady, this was very interesting to me.

Brady, get yourself a Pilot Varsity or Lamy Safari and practise with modern fountain pens. Good pens will not give any line breaks, blots or thickness variation with speed of writing. Look up the Parker 51 - best fountain pen ever made.

I make my own ink and pens, as well as I love writing with glass pens. This looks like a lot of my attempts. I'm still trying to get the consistency of my ink to work well with both quill and glass pens. This offer is for Brady alone - BTW, if you want some of the ink I made, I have around a gallon of it. I'll give you 1.5 oz of it for the asking along with a quill pen I carved myself. If you wish a refill, I'll do that as well. Pre-tested of course to make sure it works. Keep up the good work. I love your videos on all your channels. Please, ask me, I'd love to see you try it out on one of your videos.
