Save 15% on your Carly device with my code Zeroto60 until October 15th bit.ly/ZeroTo60
Carly has a free lite version of the app to go with their OBD2 device. That'll give you access to the standard OBD features and is a good way to check what Carly can do for your car. To unlock advanced features that might be available for your car, such as coding and used car checks, you can upgrade to the yearly license.

Use ProTool over Carly. ProTool uses the BMW protocol whereas Carly uses a generic OBD protocol. Carly has been known to cause problems and brick modules.

I too read somewhere that it wasn't all I was going to want or need etc. I eventually bought Pro Tool at a much higher price from what I gather. I paid I think it was $275 CAD for the Master level coding and diagnostics on Pro tool. It is Very extensive and knowing that you are sponsored by Carly I won't go into it here. But I wonder what the differences really are. I think as you said Carly is set up more for regular users and not Tuners so much as Pro tool is. However I don't really know that I got anything more that I wouldn't have gotten with Carly. Good Video as.

    Great review.
    Always love the honesty.
Usability almost always wins. Part of the reason why Apple is so dominant is that it’s just intuitive and easy, you might only get 80-90% of the features but most people are happy as long as it works well.

I appreciate the usability and actual practicality of carly coding. I was able to get the app to work with just an otg and a k+dcan. However, would not recommend it. It was a nightmare getting the cable to actually show up in the app, as they keep pushing their special dongle. My only real complaint is the annual subscription. Just wish it was a single payment

I might have bought one years ago if they didn't name it Carly. It just sounds like something that wants to steal your information, to me. But I see now that it has a lot of good features. I think you can even code injectors and run tests? May have to pick one up, but I'm also thinking about getting protools. Don't think PT has a subscription? I use ISTA but it was a headache to get working on my f30 and there are a bunch of things it won't do because it loses connection to the DME, like certain tests.

I have standard tools on an old thinkpad laptop running windows XP.
I don’t use that laptop for anything else. It is never connected to the internet and windows is never updated.
Software like inpa and winkfp and NCS expert was designed for windows xp and they run with full functionality with XP
For ista I use a different laptop and that laptop runs windows 7. Again this laptop is never connected to the internet and never updated. And I never use that laptop for anything else.
So the answer is get two cheap old laptops on eBay and don’t use them for anything else.
