  • Purchasing a saddle is a big investment. Purchasing a saddle that will fit you is imperative. There are lotta videos and a lot of information out there about what it takes for a saddle to fit you properly, but not all of that information is 100% correct. So I’ve added my two cents to the pot. Hope it helps.

    Very well explained! Also hard to find a saddle that fits BOTH you and your horse! Very HARD to find a saddle that fits you and multiple different types of horse's! But once you find that saddle take care of it and it will last a lifetime! Hell my saddle was built in 1966! I haven't ridden horses in years but I will NEVER get rid of my saddle!

    I actually sat in several different saddles and arrived at getting into a 17 inch roping saddle and it fits me and my mare like a glove. Take as much time and fuss over and over again until you do find “ the one”.

    So true-I teach people to ride bareback and saddle and how to train horses-it is difficult to express the importance of “riding” the horse which therefore I figure you need lots of room in your saddle to Ride-Great explanation and video -already shared to a few people-maybe coming from someone else might help me convey this message

    Western saddle trees are typically measured from the cantle to the top of the gullet, not the horn. That said I recently had a professional saddle maker make a saddle that ended up being way too large for me. He measured me all up and said I needed a 17.5" one of his saddles. I thought, 'well every saddle maker is different so maybe his 17.5" is somebody else's 16" or 15.5" '. I just didn't think I needed a 17.5" because I am fairly tall but I'm not that big and have no belly but I put my money down and paid to have him make me saddle trusting that he knew what he was doing as he makes the saddles and the trees he uses all by hand. It's beautiful and it's super comfortable but it's waaaaaay too big for me. I can ride it just fine, like you said you ride the horse not the saddle but when I sit in it and ride where I do I've got at least 3" - 4" inches in front of me and 3" - 5" behind me and it takes up a LOT of real estate on my horse's backs. I paid $4,500-ish for it and I will most likely take a loss on it when I sell it, because I'm not keeping a saddle that I spent that much money on, only to have it fit me that badly. The saddle maker I used came highly recommended from a great number of folks in the horse world I talked with but I think he could use some work on fitting the saddle to the man. Like you I don't want to be squeezed in but I don't want to pay that kind of money to essentially ride bareback saddle fit wise.

    • @AndyTheCornbread
      @AndyTheCornbread 7 месяцев назад

      @@rafterL78 That's what I thought too, but he insisted that was the size seat I needed in his custom made tree. FWIW I have been riding for 45 years now. I should have listened to my gut and told him that I normally ride a 15.5 and sometimes a 16 depending on the maker. You could quite literally fit two people in this saddle seat and I need a warmblood size horse to put it on.

Now that I found your posts I have gave them my advise but tell them to be sure and watch yours. I have never recommended anyone else. I especially appreciated your post about the ones that come out and measure the horse to build a saddle since I have been telling customers it’s a waste. When they have asked about the trainers on TV , I always tell them to watch the birds with horse crap. They pick out the good stuff and leave the crap behind.

    Hi Dewayne, I’m primarily an English rider and have ridden both hunt seat in both a jumping and flat saddle and also very deep-seated dressage saddles. I’ve also ridden in endurance saddles and Paso Fino saddle-seat saddles and Icelandic horse saddles. I’ve also ridden in basic western saddles for trail riding.
    Your points about how to fit a western saddle are the same for other kinds of saddles. Size of knee rolls, seat style, cantle height, and space needed for attached accessories all factor into saddle fitting.
    The one important thing that I thought you would briefly mention was that saddle size is also relative to the breed and size of the horse in addition to the riding discipline. But I do realize the limited time you have and to not overwhelm the newbie or bore the experienced rider.
    I think that I tend to ride a 17” dressage saddle (+/-) and/or all-purpose saddle (so I’ve been told). I can tell when the saddle size is too small as it throws my weight and balance forward, so I compensate as best I can. I often ride in saddles owned by women as I do “catch riding” of my friends’ horses, so the saddles are usually a bit too small for me.
    A 17” saddle sized for a horse with a wide and/or long back and a horse with either high or low withers and/or different kinds of shoulders will also determine how a saddle is sized. And this also takes into account different horse breeds and breed types too. Your average old style Quarter Horse May need a completely different sized saddle than an Appendix or more leaner breed.
    Of course you also could have mentioned the different kinds of saddles for all the different riding disciplines, but that would take a much longer time.
    In the end though, please tell me what you think is more important to selecting a saddle, how it fits your horse, or most horses, or fits the rider.

      He kinda answers your last question in other video about Wrangling & saddles. When working different ranches & wrangling jobs. You never know what horses you'll be working. So there is no 1 answer, depends on what You will be doing. I.ve worked ranch that you coulden.t use your own saddle, foreman wanted you using ranch gear, already matched their horsed for most part. But your experience with the dressage riding is a workd of knowledge in itself.

    Great point don't listen to a roper or other arena cowboy. They use saddles that are too small for trail riding and packing. How often does a roper turn around and look behind his mule/horse? If you hunt your saddle needs to be a little big so when it gets cold and you layer up you have room to rotate to take care of your pack mule that took a left when you took a right

    • @michaelduffy5695

      Wade type saddles will fit the majority of mustangs with short backs. Keep in mind that a Mustang isn't full-grown until it's 8 years old. Depending on what HMA your Mustang came from, what you're feeding and what kind of excercise they're getting, your 14 hand 4 year old could very well be in the 15 to 16 hands at 8 years old. One of my twin peaks horses went from 14.3 to 16 hands between 6 years old and 8 years old.

      In many cases, the length of the seat has a lot to do with the overall length of the saddle. Not only that, but the length of the skirt and the back jockeys affect the size of the saddle as well. One of the things that you can do is make sure that you purchase a saddle that does not have excessively large skirts or jockeys in the back. Usually, saddles with rounded skirts or what they call a butterfly skirt do not have near the excess leather sticking out the back of the cantle, and work well for short backed horses.

      I will throw in my two cents on corriente saddles. I own one of their Wade saddles, that’s what I ride right now it is very comfortable for me.(5’10” 150#) that said when I was cowboying and working in it I have sored one horse. The second time time it happened to him (after changing pads) I turned him out for 3months to heal up. He now has a lump of scar tissue on his back now right where the skirting is woven together in the back. I cut a hole in a saddle pad where that spot is and it no longer gives me an issue. Until we do 12+hours on the mountain gathering that’s when he gets just a little tender but not bad. I always say you get what you pay for. I believe that 100%. However if you are just trail riding or arena stuff they are great. It has served me well and will continue to do well until I can save the money for very nice saddle. Again just my $.02 I like mine but am saving for a higher quality one. I have certainly got my $900 out of the saddle and then some.

      Teskey's ranch saddles with an association tree in them fit a horse pretty good and are strong enough to rope something big out of them. I have had 3 of them. Corriente saddles have had some really bad issues with some of their construction hardware. Their stirrup leathers tend to wear out pretty quick because they use leather from the belly instead of the strong back leather. It honestly depends on who is making them that day. If you are really serious about getting into riding, I would recommend buying the best you can afford. I have a custom built saddle and there is night and day difference in quality between it and a my Teskey saddles. It cost 3 times as much, but it will last me the rest of my lifetime.

    I heard you say forking your horse. Would you please explain that meaning? Great video, thank you for posting.

      Forking your horse means you’re not sitting back on your pockets with your feet jacked out in front of you and braced against the stirrups putting you in chair seat. It means you’re in a well balanced position and riding the horse, not the saddle.

    I assume that this is a ranch saddle by the way it looks i have a question can you do a posting trot in a saddle like this i know certain saddles put you in different positions and it was just a curious thought that came to mind

    • @kristencora
      @kristencora 4 месяца назад +1

      Yes, you can. It is possible to post in most, if not all saddles, just harder in some than others. In any saddle that puts you in a chair seat position or has swells close to your legs it is more difficult. A properly built ranch saddle, especially a slick fork like this, has no swells to get in the way and should have you in a well balanced position and should be easy to post in.

    Personally, I wouldn't buy a saddle, especially a Western saddle, without having a professional saddle fitter vet it first. Just lack of experience.

    You never measure a saddle from the horn. The correct measurement is taken from the back of the swell top of hand hole to the top of cantle. Biggest factor that effects fit is the thigh measurement, and that is taken from the point of the cantle to the bottom edge of the swell.

    I have such a hard time with these videos. I'm really interested in the subject matter but Dewayne ALWAYS sets himself up as the lone voice of reason in an uptight, ignorant, clueless world. The saddle pad video was the same. Same superior tone. And btw, seat length on a western saddle isn't typically measured from the horn; it's measured from the back of the fork (pommel).

    • @kristencora
      @kristencora 11 месяцев назад +1

      I believe you're mistaken. Dewayne doesn't try to be the superiority. He just knows things from common sense and life-long experience, which is something this world is very lacking in. His tone is not condescending or anything of the sort. He is confident in his knowledge of the subject and that confidence is what you're hearing. I'm younger than many of the riders and trainers in my area by a long margin, and I never pretend to be better than them or try to make them think I'm better, but they come to me and ask me their questions because I am confident in what I know, and they know it and want to learn. The same is here with Dewayne. He's just trying to help people out. He IS one of the few true voices of reason left in this world. For the most part, I'm sorry to say, but the world IS ignorant and clueless. There are some who know things still, but the decrease in common sense and actual knowledge from what it was 200, or even 50 years ago is astonishing and terrifying. It makes me sad to think of it. Dewayne is a wealth of information. Try listening and learning. If it's too hard for you, then you must know that he does know more than you, but you can't admit that to anyone, even yourself, so instead, you bash him. I hope that's not the case, but that is what it appears to be. Please try watching more of his videos with open eyes and ears and see if you can't learn something. I don't mean to be rude, and I hope I didn't come across that way, I'm just trying help out. Thank you. Have a great day!

      @epona9166 I’m always learning, and I would be happy to hear your view on any subject where you feel I am wrong. As per your comment on how to measure a saddle seat, you are 100% correct. The measurement is from the pommel to the back of the cantle. It’s very hard to keep one’s thoughts in order, record a video with no cuts, and no edit while also concentrating on the camera without making a mistake.

      @@kristencora Thanks for the psychoanalysis, but I have zero problem acknowledging that Dewayne knows more than I do about horses. Besides, you miss the point. It has nothing to do with Dewayne's knowledge or experience, which is obviously considerable. It's that in some of his videos the "setup" is that we horse people are not choosing our tack wisely, or are overspending, whatever, and he's going to set us straight. It's obvious from the comments that many of this channel's viewers don't know much, if anything, about horses. But for those of us who do, and who have put a great deal of thought and research into everything we do with our horses, and who know that one-size-fits-all is simply not true, the premise can be mighty off-putting.

      @@epona9166 Even though I'm quite advanced and start and train horses and retrain rescues and have tuned up a mare for a state renowned trainer, I don't hesitate to acknowledge that Dewayne has far more experience than I. It's good to see you do as well. It's sad to say that most people have no clue what they're doing. For those of us who do, that is awesome, but in my area, or for a couple hundred miles around, I only know of one person besides myself that knows one size does not fit all. Even a state renowned trainer I know has no clue. It's sad. These videos though, were not made for those of us who know this stuff, but for those who don't. Dewayne has even said this in multiple videos, that this is to help the new green young rider and give them a little guidance. Unless I'm mistaken, he even said that in this video. After all, why would those of us who know these things watch these videos? I only watch videos on subjects I know to see other view points or to see if they're worth sharing to those who don't know. There are many people I know who think if the saddle is easy to carry in one hand, is pink, one of China's virgin lamb shearling (synthetic) and China's high end leather (synthetic/cordura/ or whatever they make now), and has all the pretties on it it must be great for the horse. Sadly, that's not the case, and that's what way too many people think. I know Dewayne meant these videos are to help them understand the truth, not to make those of us who actually know these things to look dumb. Have a wonderful day!
