- In July and August 2024, student-led protests against autocratic rule in Bangladesh resulted in police violence, hundreds of deaths, and the flight of long-time leader Sheikh Hasina.
Now, as the country prepares for its first meaningful multi-party election in years, young demonstrators who risked their lives reflect on their struggle and warn politicians that the demand for a corruption-free, equal Bangladesh cannot be reversed.
Activists stress that irrespective of gender, religion, or ethnicity, all citizens must be treated equally, or face renewed resistance from a population that has tasted freedom.
