Beautiful pony engine! Purist comments aside, good call on reassembly with proper hardware. This is a working machine, the starter for that big happy D2 Caterpillar Diesel!
It would be a shame to rebuild this engine solely as a mantelpiece. If it's rebuilt, it's ready for real world service.
Again, my compliments on a brilliant rebuild. I had to rebuild the American Bosch magneto and the carburetor. To this day, my buddy uses this engine to put the D2 to work, a real pleasure to start and watch.

It might be a bit too heavy for only 10HP and water cooled.. These are also supposed to have only about 250 hour mean time to repair lifespan.

You talk about using cast governor parts to keep the original look. Please tell us why you seem to replace all the fasteners with new modern ones with spring washers. Surely this is a perfect way to alter the look of the machine and please tell us what was wrong with the original manufacturer's fasteners.

Beautiful job on this engine, such a joy to watch. I'm I'm the process of rebuilding mine but have ran into a problem getting parts. I've been told by caterpillar that the pistons, rod and main bearings have been discontinued. Do you know of any place I can get them? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I would suggest going to a cat dealer with the part numbers you need. They'll be able to tell you if they have any. acmoc.org forum is a good source. Floren tractor in Sacramento has a lot of old stock but are often high on prices.

What is the name of the yellow paint you used? It looks awesome.

Most of the pony motor was painted with Krylon Old Cat Yellow in a spray can(s). A bit hard to find but it can be had.

    New Sub. Great movies.
Any chance anyone could point me in the right direction?
Just picked up a d4, serial number starts with 7J ends in SP. Trying to figure out what the SP stood for. Special Purpose?
No blade, just a winch. But she runs mint.

My understanding is SP refers to special parts in the transmission usually giving higher ground speeds to some of the gear positions. An ag or logging cat might use them but a dirt pusher probably not.

It's a Zenith TU4C. These or ones very similar are used on John Deere V4 pony motors too.
