From the Baltimore Sun: "The Program" shows college football players attempting to prove their mettle by lying in the middle of a highway as cars whiz by.” “In the real-life incidents, two teen-agers in Pennsylvania were struck by a pickup truck, killing one and seriously injuring another.” I remember that scene and why it was removed as well. Crazy. Haven’t thought about that in what feels like forever.
YO! It’s Gleaming the Cube issue #0!🤘 Go back and check out a few of those panels, specifically the team rolling down the hill toward the bad guys and the one with my guy ducking under the moving vehicle. Can’t believe all of the skateboard talk and not one reference to that iconic, (and quite good!), movie. Keep up the great work, gentlemen!
I saw this long ago, after the fact maybe, but still decades ago. It wasn't my style, but it was very Bronze Age (maybe even some of the "edge" Silver Age), just with probably a little more graphic content (can't recall, but sorta recall thinking some violence more than I liked). And it was Neal Adams. And I like the idea. There's something cool about a character based in current trends/pop culture (even if comics are usually a bit late to the party like with Dazzler and disco or pretty ham-fisted with it, like JLDetroit's Vibe). I like them. Team America, US-1, your name it. After all, Iron Fist, Shang Chi, even Dracula and Moon Night (heck superheroes in general) where all hot topic chases in their time. But these ones that never hit it even slightly big are my favorite in a way. I'd love to see a bunch of these brought back for a single team-up or crossover arc.
Decided to check you cats out after I saw you on comictropes, fuckin stoked I have another comicbook oriented show to watch between tropes videos. Got an order or street angel and wizzy on the way as well. Keep it up
I don't know about Slater/Phoenix but the movie The Program was the movie that Disney put out and then cut that scene when a few moronic kids tried it and one died.
I chatted up with Neal Adams at a few conventions. He was great at pitching ideas that all sound plausible. Looking at some of his work like Skate-man it looks great but it’s a bat shit crazy story. Still he was pushing things forward always looking to evolve the storytelling form. Innovation doesn’t happen on the first try it takes a lot of missteps before it can find its way through. I can think of a lot of innovative that Adams did get through that improved things for the better.
It feels like something that was laying in a drawer when they were scavenging for something to publish. I have this idea that it started as some sort of cross-promotional work for a (potential) client. A lot of Adams' characters smell like media pitches for cartoons, films, toys or games. This was strongly derided, but a lot of comic shops put in healthy orders for it. Adams may have been a crank, but he was no fool.
For the life of me I cannot remember where I heard this, but SKATE MAN was a pitch for a low budget movie from Crown International Pictures. It has all the earmarks of a low budget revenge flick, and it's timing coincides with Roller Boogie and some other skate-related classics.
I love that Jim is discussing the elegance of the 6 panel grid while Skateman is handing a child a grenade

When are we going to see Skateman: Grand Design?
The Futureworld story has art by Andy Kubert, the credits sorta look like a caption box, but you can see it on the first page. Skateman forever!

Oh yeah, I thought the Christian Slater reference was going to lead into that movie
Has there been a video on The Badger? Good book and perfect for Mental Health Awareness month.
Billy Jack meets Rollerball. In both instances, this comic is tapping into two fads about ten years too late.
The movie you're thinking of is the football movie called "The Program".
I thought it was train tracks, but I wasnt allowed to see it.

The blonde banana hammock skater from Bob's Burgers is where Skateman ended up! Cruising Wonder Wharf!

@@cinexploits Picturing Jeff Conaway or David Carradine in those white shorts. Yeah, that would've worked.
Just bought this at a convention! Comic Con Revolution in Ontario California! They had it as a wall book for $5! THE KAYFABE EFFECT IS REAL!
Thanks!!!
From my Grandpa in the eighties: Poolhall = den of iniquity
Thee deepest Neil Adams cut.
I thought that movie was varsity blues. Or some other teen football flick in the late 90’s. Where they were laying on the street, playing chicken.
Well known as one of the worst comics in history. Helped put the final nail in the coffin of Pacific with all of its unsold copies. Sweet find 😄
This is thee most perfectly colored comic.
Great disection of Skateman. I still have that issue.
Man I hated this thing lol
@cartoonistkayfabe Ed- you're thinking of The Program.
