I grew up on one of these exact yerf dog go karts. Rolled the thing 3 times. Took the governor off rolled it another handful of times. Then figured out that I didn't care for the roll cage so got rid of it. Never rolled again. Maybe I got more sensible or something. True nastalgia seeing you guys work on it.
Awesome start on the new kart! It's probably been suggested before but you guys should turn one of these offroad karts into a full on track kart. It would be cool to see what you end up with!
I actually would like to see how you address the steering... I'd go bigger wheels and tires, maybe convert some 10 inchers from a pit bike for the front and some decent ATV mudders for the rear... then step the sprocket down to 60... go anywhere and probably hit 35, great setup... I think LOL...
You two are just fantastic buddies. I look forward to many more videos in the future. Thanks John, thanks Ike, for all the great content. Sincerely, A long time viewer and subcriber
Sometimes the secondary clutch on the CVT takes some time to function properly. That's probably the delayed acceleration you're talking about. I had that problem on my old kilowatt Murray go kart.
At 3:50, dude drilled thru sheet metal to access a bolt. He is my guy. I have drilled a wheel well to reach spark plug, rather than lift the engine. I used to cup fan shrouds into top half - bottom half to make fan and radiator work easier.
I'd love to see if the belt change would make a difference. Also maintenance on a used torque converter like this would be some good tech. Also, this kart has quite a bit of bump steer with the differing length or the right and left steering linkage. It'd be interesting to see if it could be eliminated to make it safer when jumping and at higher speeds.
love it! I bet if you drill the idle jet one size bigger it might have better take off. :-) I would also pull apart the torque converter and check the rollers they might gummed up and not rolling properly so it doesnt shift up and down the way its supposed to the rear driven pulley might need some love as well.
Please enlighten me on how to fix the front end. I have a Carter with the same issues, I see with this Yerf. Huge Turning radius for how small the kart is, and then the camber/toe in see at the end of video 17:57 with both sitting in it. Thanks!
I had the same motor and torque converter setup on my dingo. I still have the motor laying around but its crap. Old green like fuel in the carb aswell.
hey guys, I just moved to Spartanburg SC about a month ago and have been having a hard time battling depression and such.. I been thinking it'd be good for me to get outdoors and find people with common interests to have fun with projects, etc. I've always been into anything with an engine and have always had the dream of building my own cart. never driven or ridden in one but I can imagine it's a hoot, grew up riding a little Honda 4 wheeler so I can't think it's much different. I'm not to far from NC and would love to just be able to meet y'all one day. you guys are legends and I really look up to you, especially Ike. Have a great one guys
carsandcameras, if you put a 212cc predator on it, you will have to move the sprocket further down the driver side of the shaft, and move the torque converter chain sprocket to the outside on the driver clutch shaft. i think its #40 chain as well.
I have the same kart. It's slow as anything even with a predator 212. I was thinking of putting a smaller sprocket on too but then you'll lose some of that nice torque. I would love if you did a video on the steering because that is one of the few issues I have with mine! Oh and the whole idling issue you had, it happens with every old techumse. It was the reason I swapped mine for a 212.
Awd awd awd awd. Please consider a long term awd project. Low slung and street/grass spec. Maybe a diesel powered awd go kart? I'm sure you can miss match CVs and diffs from ATVs. I've been wanting to do such a project for 10 years.
Again, love the vid guys! Instead of doing a bigger engine, why not build a 212? I'm talking stage 4, billet fly wheel, mikuni carb, etc... It would keep it light and is something you guys haven't done!
Higher gears, slow it down more torque, I saw it having some problems with lack of low end power. Bigger front tires, I use lawn mower Rear wheels/tires on the Front of my mowers and karts. Put a straight pipe back on and use ear plugs, that's what I do
I've been looking at go karts and specifically I like the Yerf Dogs best. I'm 6' tall and was wondering if it's even worst getting a go cart or if it just wouldn't be comfortable at all.
y'all really got to get a drill with a 7/8 socket to start those engines, i have 2 baja heats both pull cord Assembly's are missing and use a power drill to start. great way to save your arm on a motor that is being brought back to life
you have to reset the king pin inclination and the acrmen angle and that should fix your steering I had the same problem with mine also idk who makes it but they a reverse gearbox for 30 series torque converters you can find them on ebay
check the belt and springs in the torque converter, they may be worn and losing power there. You would get a higher speed if you put a smaller sprocket, but then lose the log jumping torque. Geoff
I had to replace the driver springs in mine. Also need to check for driver shoe weight wear and can lube up the driver drum with spray on graphite. I also adjusted the driven's spring to allow the motor to rev up more before it shifts.
Definitely should fix the steering. Just picked up a Yerf-Dog 3200, the single seater version of yours, and it has horrible steering and it has really bad death steer at high speeds. Going to replace the a arms with 15° ones sold by Bmi and figure something out with this turning radius.
I know this is an old video but I just got one of these made a solid days attempt at rectifying the after market cab that was running it.... know it's time for a duro max 440. Yep.
as far as the high rpm torque converter thing goes, get a comet 30 series driven pulley green or yellow spring and put one in. that and a new belt will make it haul major butt. the tecumsehs arent too great stock btw. i put a 6.5 hp predator on mine and it really woke it up. also, take the driven pulley apart and clean it. mine was gummed up and really affected the performance.
Looks like I am buying one of these that needs some work to be done by Christmas for my kids. Got two questions.... What do you suggest for the rear wheels and tires (the one I am getting has none) and do you see away to move the pedals back towards the seat so that my kids could reach them better (they are blessed with my height or lack there of).
I have a yerf dog I put a tarp wrap on it, it keeps the mud and rain out. you guys should try it two, I have a video on my channel of it. love the vids keep it up
I have the same cart. I removed the seats. Installed a plush bucket seat and I'm modifying the frame to accept a 230cc 5 speed suzuki four wheeler engine. It will do 60 when its done
Double wishbone front suspension to correct the geometry of the wheels as the suspension travels, clearly the steering wasn't designed for performance. add pin hinge at the bottom of the hub carrier, add an adjustable length pillow ball control arm to the top and there ya have it, as long as the upper and lower arms are the same length and parallel it should correct the camber. now control arms should be equal length and also the same length as the suspension arms, in order to do this cars use a steering rack to increase the distance between the control end of the rack and the input shaft, im sure you guys can fabricobble something. if your going to go that far then you should be considering building a couple of degrees of kickup to the front geometry as well it will help when handling bumpy terrain. now onto the rear end. my brother in law has the same kart. I have found that if you drive it on very rough terrain the motor will shake so violently it will stall. Imho i suggest a motor plate attached to the chassis with chain drive first going to a idler installed on the same pivot as the rear suspension arm and then back to the gigantic sprocket. also a fixed ratio rear end i.e. solid axle will never be able to turn very sharp due to the inner rear wheel on a turn essentially fighting the turn. An open diff is what you need for sharp turns. as for inspiration and something to look at for ideas may i suggest looking at any Team Losi 2wd remote control car.
What you guys should do is use one of the off road frames and build an awesome off road cart with the 670 and a winch and light bars. Kind of like a rescue cart that can survive any terrain

Close call!
CarsandCameras r u gonna put a diesel in it
CarsandCameras really needs some diesel in there
Make the top of the roll cage wider and a little higher so you don't smack your head off of it anymore
CarsandCameras hey put a 600cc engine in it
lift it
You guys should build a lift kit for it, with nice shocks and extended control arms and give it a BUNCH of power. Make it a mini buggy. Please.
yes
12ozwrecker hell yeah
Existence Music that's why you give it a wider track.
Wheel spacers and wider tires
im with 12ozwrecker 300%!!!!!!!
14:13 LOL.. that was hilarious. If that ever happens to me im gonna just go for it!
love the first bit "oh shit"
3:45 killed me 😂 XD
6:38 When you realize the stove is still on.
The high rpm thing is just the toqueaverter doing its thing
i think u guys should pack some tents, food and head out for a 2 day camping trip with bolth the off road carts
@Sheldon Lavway just lol'd so hard over this 🤣
Now that was the funniest thing I have seen on this channel the close call
Next step: vehicle mounted Nerf guns. Nerf Dog.
John Cavanagh I have a yerf dog. I'm doing this. Now.
John Cavanagh it's nerf or nothing!
This went perfectly with my morning coffee. Thank you sir, you have my respect. :)

ItsStorm it looks liek sundee
ItsStorm LMFAO!!!!😂

this reminds me of the show THE OFFICE , those 2 brothers
I remember having a yerf dog years ago...
Actually we had two... First broke, second broke too...
How long did it take untill it broke a year or 2 3 4 5

Yeaaaaah buddy!!But officer, this here is for testing purposes only...
Drill a hole on each spindle closer to the knuckle to attach the tie rods to, should help you get some more turning radius.
Looks like it could use some go power sports suspension parts!
You two are just fantastic buddies. I look forward to many more videos in the future.
Thanks John, thanks Ike, for all the great content.

Jason Griffin that engine is alot older than a predator-_-
Ruslan Kostenko I realize that. I've worked on several.
all 3 of my $100 OfferUp go-kart finds had Tecumsehs. Replaced them with $15 carb from amazon, and they're all running fine. Very easy.
