  • First in a series of Cane Train videos taken in October 2014. This one is in the region around South Johnstone/Innisfail showing trains serving the South Johnstone mill. An interesting feature is the short stretch of street running through the village on the approach to the mill.

No matter how many times I watch these videos (Australian cane railways), it never ceases to amaze me how smooth, fast and powerful these small jackshaft/rod driven diesel hydraulic 0-6-0's are... Just goes to show that there's nothing wrong (other than increased maintenance maybe) with the "old school" rod drive.

I had a bit of fun trying to find the location of the last scene on google maps / Streetview. Nothing matched up. Then I noticed the "Millaa Millaa" and "Henderson Drive" signs. Found those on streetview easily enough, but still not a match. Then I noticed the patches in the roads and the old trackbeds. Looks like they've "rationalised" the number of level crossings since the video was taken. ;-)

Yes. In 2014 the tramway did an "S" bend crossing the road three times. By 2016, they had eliminated the bend with only one crossing near the hotel remaining. You can see this on my 2016 video. The remnants of the old alignment are visible on Google Earth.

Small diameter wheels on the transport cars; wonder how they're lubricated?
