  • Vladimir dreams big, and aims to go small. So small, in fact, that he works on a cellular level. He has developed solar panels so thin, you can print them on paper, or lay a sheet of them over a window without obscuring the light. Imagine what the world would look like if any surface could be a solar grid; imagine how quickly we could change our carbon footprint if, for instance, all our mobile devices were self-powered. Vladimir imagines these things, and works to make them happen, in an inspiring blend of creativity and scientific genius.
    Vladimir Bulović joined MIT in 2000 and is a Professor of Emerging Technology and the School of Engineering’s Associate Dean for Innovation. He leads the Organic and Nanostructured Electronics Laboratory and is co-director of the eni-MIT Solar Frontiers Center and MIT’s Innovation Initiative.
    He is an author of over 140 articles and an inventor of over 50 patents in areas of light-emitting diodes, lasers, photovoltaics, and others. He has founded several solar and other technology companies. Prof. Bulović’s many awards include the U.S. Presidential Early Carrier Award for Scientist and Engineers and the National Science Foundation Career Award. In 2012, he shared the SEMI Award for North America in recognition of his contribution to commercialization of the quantum dot technology.
    In 2008 he was named the Class of 1960 Faculty Fellow in recognition of his contribution to Energy Education, in 2009 he was awarded the Margaret MacVicar Faculty Fellowship, MITs highest teaching honor.

    All the comments below prove humans think linearly and not exponentially. I've watched solar power drop 80% in cost during my career in...solar energy engineering. And as the video suggests, we didn't really see it coming either.

    The critical value is whether halogenated vinyl or halogenated carbon pollution was created. It is still possible to do what he is saying . Metal oxide and double bonds of the dye a metal acid liquid battery. Natural solar

    That was interesting. But, the smaller/thinner things get, the more fragile they get. Durability of the products will have to be considered, especially for do-it-yourself products. It would be nice if it all works out.

    The guy is a freaking genius. 34 years old and has full professorship at one of the worlds most prestigious engineering schools. Speaks several languages and is a very interesting and engaging speaker. For something unrelated but interesting, check out the cutie at 6:05.

      its a long ways out for actually being commercially viable. We are in the infancy of solar and I believe new technologies will make todays solar obsolete.

    Mining enough indium to satisfy the widespread introduction of transparent solar cells will be a major problem. You have to make solar cells out of cheap, widely available materials (like silicon) if you are going to change the world.

      That is why perovskite materials are so interesting, because there are many potential molecule combinations that use earth-abundant materials, and have different attributes.
      I think their downside is that air exposure causes them to degrade, so they have to be encapsulated to prevent this.

      But he's talking about harnessing micron thick cells, nowhere near the quantity required by a Si cell. I also don't think there were any claims of immediate commercial usage. There are hurdles to overcome, which I think we can all acknowledge.

      True, but I'm the same way. I don't like speaking under bright lights and prefer moving to the outside of their range. I find the light a distraction.

    May be he could speak of natural solar panels erythrosorbate over nickel steel cells covered in glass. All metal and acid battery. Add acfc q20 v inverters well Edison generators and dynamos are continuing and equal in current and voltage to hydro electric Nuclear and fossil fuels. PUC required powerplant.

    In the United States in 2017 solar provided six tenths of one per cent of the energy consumed. Solar is the future and will always be the future.

      Not as it is now. It just takes up too much space. New Solar technologies like this transparent PV's may be the future but the biggest hurdle is going to be greed...… utility companies just won't allow people to not need them.

    ...at the Same time we started hyper-injecting fossilized carbon into our atmosphere.... we began PROLIFERATING Iron Plow Tillage.... agriculturally DISRUPTING optimal PHOTO-SYNTHETIC carbon SEQUESTRATION and Doubling the Damage....at LEAST. We MIGHT be able to turn THAT around faster than anything else we CAN do.... EXPONENTIALLY increasing Soil Carbon Retention by adopting all-around no-till organic agricultural methods.... MANY beneficial Societal 'side-effects' here... MO' Food & MO' Bettah Food&Health & Mo' Bettah Money (at GROUND-level.... where LongGreen Money makes Mo' Bettah Benefits in trickle-UP ECO-nomic Bops) and LESS/LESS money to the Manufacturers of Agri-Toxin.... where Mo' Money makes Mo' PROFIT$fo'POI$ON$ and NOTHING else.... and THERE's your trouble.... NOW we know why it's so hard to even TALK about making beneficial changes much less understand root Need for So doing AND....Root Cause for NOT.... Go ahead.... Wave your magic Wand.... even WITHOUT climate crisis.... these agri-poisons cause Air/Water/Food AND Health Pollution.... so IF you should find yourselves mentally incapable of grasping Wider Scoping for this Impending Horror... understand clearly NOW.... that carcinogenic agri-chem residues are CURRENTLY doing to your being'n'body what the manufacturers of those chemicals are doing to all Life IN AND ON Earth. It is Time to Change.... not just HOW we generate and use our energy...(..Roof-top Solar w/BatteryBack-up NOnukes AND electro-motivation..)... but HOW we grow the very food we eat....and in So doing we can.... in MOST likelihoods.... RESOLVE our Climate AND Pollution PROBLEMS.... in REAL Time....BEFORE we run out of 'UNPOLLUTED' Air.... Water.... Soil.... and us.

    I keep saying this is not good solar needs to make hydrogen, Storing it makes it workable, the battery won't get there, storing hydrogen is easy and can be used in already existing engines running on Benzin, no rebuilding and replacing already good systems, if you can use a defriend fuel, this would help the world to on pollution because if you burn hydrogen you close the circle, from water and power, get oxygen and hydrogen in this process the oxygen will be pure and on release help the planet, the stored hydrogen can be run on any compression engines, and if burnt help the planet in place of poisoning it, turning the hydrogen back to water, the start of the circle, rebuilding and designing new engine would negate the already great advances of the car industry, the cars that are already on the street and poor people, because it can be sold @ a gas station , hydrogen is needed in space travel launch too
