I, for one, personally don’t mind referencing Hawaii or Somoa when defining myself, Micronesian/Marshallese mixed with Japanese. I understand others may not be as free and willing. Don’t get me twisted, I am very aware and proud of my origin. Think about it man, there’s google and almost everybody carries a smart device. If they care enough, they’ll educate themselves. Fun fact in 1920 the Japanese counted for 42% percent of the population in the Hawaiian islands now it's like 18% or something

And possibly having multiple uses of any resources on the islands. People who were humble to a fault yet deadly when provoked. People who probably were very well versed in reading ocean/star patterns and sailing around the entirety of the pacific and colonizing those islands. People who probably went to war with neighboring islands over cultural differences. Who’s children have now carried on that hate even after moving off island(looking at you Samoans and Tongans). As a Hawaiian, it royally pisses me off whenever people mock or try to imitate my culture. They always say things like "Hawaii? They have SUCH and easy life there! Nothing like the states!" For your information, my family's life really is tough. Some of my friends were forced on the streets because some haole wanted to live in their house. The government sends homeless people here because they get "privileges". People STILL don't think that Hawaii has a culture and language. Even so, I am proud to have Hawaiian blood and have the aloha spirit in my life. Hawai'i imua!

    • @itsyaboidaniel2919
      @itsyaboidaniel2919 6 лет назад +5

      I am pretty late but most of what a most Americans think about Hawaii is from advertisements and TV and stuff, and usually when companies want people to go on a vacation there they don't really go into the not so good stuff, otherwise people wouldn't want to go there, and that would hurt business, so you can't really blame the people themselves when the advertisers are the main ones making people think that is the case,
      Also I don't really know anything about your friends being forced to move out, but chances are the white people (because yes, I know exactly what you mean by "haole") were willing to pay more and the landlord being a land lord wanted to make money off of someone else renting their land/living space, and so they kicked them out, not saying it was right, but business is business, and sometimes people get screwed over, also did the white person know people were already living there? Because if not then they may have been unaware of what they accidentally caused, if they did know then thats kind of on them, and they should have looked for a different house,
      I doubt many people think Hawaii doesn't have a culture or a language, but the whole learning some island chain in the middle of the Pacific Ocean's culture thing isn't exactly on everyones to do list, and what they do know or think they know is again, because of advertisements,
      EDIT: Just put "people" where it should have been, which now makes "the advertisers are the main ones making people think that is the case, "

    *As a Asian Pacific Islander (75% Chamorro and 25% Filipino) I am EXTREMELY PROUD of MY HERITAGE and MY CULTURE. YES! It's tough growing up AND living state side, dealing with people who have NO IDEA about Pacific Islanders. I still get frustrated trying to EXPLAIN where I'm from. I'm constantly mistaken for being Mexican. This video is emotional for me because they're ALL right! Our culture is slowly fading away and we are becoming more accustomed to the AMERICAN/HAOLE/STATESIDE ways. I feel like I'm looked down on for no longer carrying my Chamorro accent and I speak "PROPER ENGLISH" even though I've spoken English my entire life. It is ultimately up to OUR GENERATION to carry on our HERITAGE to our children and our children's children, but with the backlash and discrimination that we face as ISLANDERS, it will be a tough battle to win. To ALL my P.I.'s REMAIN STRONG and KEEP the CULTURE ALIVE!!*

    Bula from a Fijian brother! My grandparents were the biggest influence in my life. The lessons they taught me are priceless, for example how to read the waves to know where to find fish, hunt for wild pigs, how to raise chickens, how to slaughter animals humanely for food (I learned at 5 years of age), climb the coconut tree, husk and scrape the coconut for milk (every freaking day!) how to preserve the mangroves for future generation for tapa making, the different medicinal purposes of plants and how they heal us. How to plant crops and understand how having a balanced farm is so important in the long term. Some of my best memories was listening to my grandfather tell us legends of our ancestors.
    These and many other traditions are starting to disappear from island life. I'm only in my 30's now and I wonder what it'll be like in 10-20 years. Are more island kids going to forget their culture? What are we doing to preserve such rich traditions?

I wish we could be compensated because my Hawaiian family owned land in many places but the government has ownership of it and it's hard to understand why we've been treated this way but no one wants to own up to these things and make a change in it.

    I’m tired of being called Maui, or Asian every time I go to school. Like, dude, just because I’m Pacific Islander doesn’t mean I’m Moana or Maui. I’m pretty sure Moana didn’t live in Chuuk. Plus, I get it from my dads side. I’m not 100% Pacific Islander, but I was raised in a Pacific Islander household and around a lot of my dads family.

      LOOOOOOL that's so true, I'm not Maltese but I was always fascinated with Malta because History is my favourite subject and when I moved to the US I was talking with some friends and I mentioned that I would very much like to try Maltese cuisine and they all gave me a funny look and asked why I wanted to eat a dog :D :D :D I was baffled!

    As a Hawaiian It’s hard to explain the sense of loss you feel when you know that your people and culture will disappear. In time my people and my culture will disappear. And all that will be left, will be stories of a powerful and magical people that called Hawaii home, that is just a vacation getaway in paradise to you. Aloha, Malama Pono, Malama Aina, KU KANAKA 🤙🏾
