One thing to note, Rainworlds is RNG based due to a reason.
the creature AI is always stimulated within the region you are in, so it can move to place to place looking for food or to avoid danger.
Often getting into a brawl with other creatures in a room you haven't even entered yet.
This perfectly conveys Rainworld's brutality and beauty.
I can't tell you how many times I've entered a room to see a dead Scav or Lizard and there's a Dropwig or Centipede laying around that clearly did the deed.
I like to think of it less as rng and more as chance. When I stopped thinking of it as a bad dice roll and instead think of it as just a thing that happened, I enjoyed the randomness a lot more.

one thing i dont see mentioned is the artstyle, it is amazing. not only does it work great gameplay-wise, it is actually really pretty. one thing i love in ai is procedural animation, and the pixel art works so well with it sometimes it's hard to tell whether animations are preset or not

Rain world can best be defined as nature, brutal and unforgiving yet beautiful and diverse.
Another way its like nature is how it really makes you feel like a survivor. Not a human survivor, crafting and building but an animal survivor. Learning the ecosystem, fighting for your life with stones and spears. Finding something new and taking that risk to experiment with it is an amazing feeling. I way prefer the animal survivor type over a human one but as far as I know, rain world is the only one to do that.

I bought this game a few days ago. I love it but it has spawned a fear inside me I never knew I had. Why is everything so terrifying?
I think I have this same fear, too, but only with specific creatures.
I usually pause the game, take my time to plan what I'll gonna do and only start it when I feel i'm ready. It work for me at least.

Every time I see one I get a primal fear deep in my gut. Any time I have to pass one, I find myself clenched unto a ball.
I think it’s the procedurally animated movement. They’re nasty enough on their own, but the fact that they move like real creatures (but never how they should) sells it.
The only thing that scares me in this game are the spiders
Monster kelp is terrifying in a different way for me, instead of just heebie-jeebies it’s “oh god it’s gonna get me and kill me I gotta stay away”, like, normal danger assessment telling me to not approach that

The enemy ai is lovely and amazing, they have their own paths and schedules, diets, fears, prey, preditors, ect. The enemies are perfect aswell, because they arent perfect predators, they make mistakes, like falling off poles, or accidentaly jumping off, missing their attacks etc. The enemy ai is amazing and i love it
Really the only creature with bad ai is the raindeer oh god the raindeer idk if they were fixed in downpour but oh god those things can just sit there for an entire cycle blocking other raindeer and therefore the player
@Destroyer I'd have more success having a lizard bring me across farm arrays in his jaws and then dropping me on the other end, then getting the skankly legged deer to pick one direction and go in it

Raindeer have been... improved. Fixed isn't the word, but they're more reliable than lizards now.
It should be known almost all enemies are not random beyond off screen creatures(vultures, leviathans, scavengers, and miros birds). They have a den they exit and return to over the cycle. If you see a creature in a location, there is a good chance it will be nearby or back again next cycle. The only exception of that rule is if they got injured, or died, and simply decided to stay home that cycle, or it is a lineage den to which it’s inhabitant can change(lizard to lizard, centipede to centipede).
Item drops can be more random, but their spawning is location based, so some areas will simply not have spears, or a lot of them.
There is rng in this game, that is true, although I believe understanding what is simply difficult and problem solving, is much better than oblivious, frustrating, trial and error.
Oh yea I've got a white lizard in chimney canopy that just chills near my shelter and is just there I've also learned that is almost never enters the room right next to its den
Rain world seems like it was made to fail both critically and financially, but they're still adding new content. I can respect that.
If you look at the steam charts it actually had basically 0 players for years until recently and especially the release of downpour
tbh the devs kinda gave up on it, the update is made by players (like the mod downpour was actually a mod called more slugcats but then was made in a big dlc)

I love games that don't hand hold the player and expects them to think about what they're doing and learn accordingly.
A game I love named "Darkwood" was excellent for this, and Rain World seems to be like that as well!
Darkwood is way less RNG heavy so you can actually learn how to deal with things. In Rain World bad rng can just destroy you without any recourse
darkwood also has a gloomy atmosphere, punishing gameplay and a constant threat that inches ever closer with every step you take that you need to go into a designated spot in order to avoid

One of the reasons of why I like rainworld is because it really makes you think how it would be to be a prehistoric human desperately trying to survive against the harshness of nature

I'm still going through my first playthrough (as monk since that's supposedly """""""easy""""""" mode), and at first I was hoping for a kind of a happy end where you find your family again and use your knowledge to idk something like leading them to better places... now I'm starting to think that you'll never get back, and it's all about going on an unrewarding path of enlightenment... and death.

@@agustron2479 I have. In fact, I've played most except for Rivulet and Saint. I've been playing them in chronological order (Spear, Arti, Hunter, Gourmand, Survivor, Monk, Rivulet, Saint), and I'm now back at Monk after a set back... I accidentally reset Hunter instead of monk, so had to do that one again. However, that time it got more painful than usual. You see, I've done Gourmand's food quest so now I have slugpups spawning for H/G/Surv. My parental instincts kind of kicked in giving me inexplicable joy when I found out what one of my pups likes to eat the most in my Surv playthrough. Seeing another pup it hurts me so much knowing that I cannot help it as Hunter. Either I die horribly and kill the poor thing, or leave it behind and find shelter before it can join me. Doing the latter would technically give it a fighting chance (as it could find another shelter), but it hurt so much.
I was literally just looking at rain world videos to try and see if I wanted it. Even researched fokoes old video on rainworld. Then I clear the video search filter and I see this at the top of the recommendations

I have nearly 500 hours in Rain World. To say it is my favorite game of all time is an understatement. As you said, getting over the slump of being confused and turned around when I first started had frustrated me to no end. But now that I know the regions like the back of my hand, I find myself missing being confused and turned around. There was a sense of exploration, like hiking a new trail for the first time. Thankfully, the Rain World community helps spice things up in the steam workshop. I am also eagerly awaiting for The Watcher DLC to release.
My favorite part is that we play a sentient pipe cleaner. That's in game canon. Our character is decended from a creature born to clear pipes.

Me and my friend played rain world and didn't even find it that frustrating nor tedious. Though, I am an extremely tenacious gamer, and have a tendancy to throw myself at brick walls for a long time without getting annoyed.

This game reminds me a lot of an old game called trip world with the personality of each enemy and the main character design.
While the rng is heavy, I very rarely felt like rng was the cause of my death. Minor mistakes could be heavily punished, but most of the time I felt like I learned something with each one. Either an input mistake, a poor risk assessment, or learning something new about a creature. 20 hours in and I'm backflip spear killing. Haven't given up yet, but maybe I'm just the adaptive meticulous sort!
20 hours in i was dogstuck on underhang trying to go the wall route for some reason, and could most definitely not do backflip spear kills
@@znoopsy to be fair, I only pull them off a third of the time. Which is still some of the time! Never actually did underhang in my first run. Accadentially avoided Pebbles.

Don't act like 90% of the rain world community didn't hate the game at first. Critics have a limited time to play the game. I don't like critics but acting like they're losers for having the same experience as everyone else is pathetic and ridiculous.
Also being unfair has been accepted as a bad thing by basically everyone who's ever played a video game. You can't just expect people to suddenly like unfair games.
Also don't you all talk about how unfair rain world is all the time? But when someone says they died unfairly it's always a "skill issue"? That doesn't make sense somehow.
At least the title is consistent, unlike another rain themed rogue lite that just so happened to be covered on this channel twice.

The only flaw with rain world is the screen transitions. The camera tracking mod makes the game play better with none of the framing or visuals suffering

I am working on my first ever playthrough. I have no idea what the story is. I get really mad when I die. But the euphoria that comes when I survive another cycle is wonderful. Not to mention the fact that slugcats are so adorable and the art style is amazing. It makes the suffering worth it. At least for me.

my hardcore survival horror roguelike playing ass: "you had me at unfair"
One thing i absolutely love about rainworld is how often it forces on the fly thinking. Like, when i was in the farm arrays i ran into a scavanger toll. I didnt have a pearl and so went off to try and find one. Soon after a vulture flew in to try and kill me in which i managed to scare it off with a few spears to the chest. A few seconds later that same vulture started attacking the scavangers at the toll in which i took the opportunity to slip by the scavangers currently fighting he vulture.
This game is truly some special, a once in a century kind of masterpiece. That inventive genius, something new. It reminds me of how I fell in love with undertale years ago and realized what a special experience it is. Or even further back, when I discovered a quaint little block game with these green exploding things. Those gems that stick with you for the rest of your life. This is one of those games.
You say it’s not a masterpiece but right after you sure make it sound like one! Anyways, nice video I’ll definitely try revisiting the game sometime soon

I usually never refer to Rain World as a game, because it doesn't feel like one. It feels more like an experience to go through, because of how special and unique it is. The emotions this game had made me feel are some I haven't experienced in years. Even years after completing it, I still wish I could travel back in time and experience it for the first time again

When you made the first rain world video i bought rain world and gave up. When you made this video it reminded of how i never beat the game. I went and beat the game (all slugcats including the dlc ones) and it is one of my favorite games now. Thanks for the great game recommendation.

basically you are a wizard going through caves, swamps, underground growths etc while mastering the art of wand tinkering only to die to a acid potion droping at your head from nowhere... there is alot of rng in it, it might be a direct competitore to rainworld!
Also there are SO MANY ways to play the game for example the sun quest, if the game's punishing and unforgivingness didnt kick you in the jewels hard enough then the sun quest will!
noita is pretty unique, but i've never, EVER, seen anything like rain world. like foekoe said, this game is unlike anything out there.

theres actually 9 slugcats (red lizard hell and water that kills you instantly etc etc) and also creature spawns are set in place its just they may choose to wander in a random direction making it seem like they are random but love your video

I've had the game for a while now and I took a break after getting stuck in five pebbles, but I agree with everything you said. Its so different and I love it for that, few games make me feel the same joy and rush that I have had while playing Rain World. I'm approaching the end of my first playthrough at my own pace, and heck more than willing to shell out for the pc version as I hook my friends onto this crazy ride for everything downpours added.

Rain World is a knowledge Metroidvania like Toki Tori 2. You are free to go anywhere and do anything, with the only limitation to that being your understanding of the game, both in its world and mechanics.

Me in arty campaign: I'LL TAKE YOU ALL ON!!!!
When I first got rain world, I thought it'd be a hunting game, where you can eat anything that can eat you so long as you get to kill them first. Boy, was I wrong!! Playing it for the first time, I felt about as strong as a snot. It was... painful, to be honest. I didn't even go to drainage system anymore or take the colored pearls to Looks To The Moon at the end, I just wanted to end the game and never look at it again!! Fast-forward some years later, and Downpour came out. I kept reading all these amazing reviews about it, hearing about all these new slugcats with their own abilities, campaigns, and content, and I decided I would give it another go. And I frickin' love it!! I didn't want to use cheats, so I started a new survivor campaign, to get a feel of the game now with the knowledge and experience I had from my first playthrough. I just reached Shaded Citadel now, and I love it sooooo much!!! Yes, I don't play for more than an hour or so at a time because then frustration gets to me, but that hour I play is pure bliss. Amazingly crafted game, with an absolute stunning atmosphere you will not find in any other game. I just love it

I just play Rainworld because of how alive the world feels. It's like I'm watching a nature documentary on an unknown world, and I'm starring a little role in it as the slugcat. It's amazing to see all the animals just being..Animals, y'know? Watch them make mistakes and do their behavior as intended.

I'm glad you can play rain world with your friends without them having to own the game through steam remote play, sure it can give your friends a jaded view of the game while playing arena with them but it's still fun

I have never stressed in a game more than rainworld that should explain why its fun as fuck
When I played Outer Wilds, I thought no game would ever immerse me enough to make me as scared as when I saw myself falling into a black hole. And in half an hour of Rain World, I was scared of cutting any corner, finding a new creature was always me being in fight or flight mode, and despite all the rage of dying (fuck Underhang) the absolute and sheer pride that I feel for every creature I kill and every shelter I reach despite having finished all but one of the campaigns is just insane, nothing I’ve experienced compares to this. The game knows how to make you feel like both prey and predator perfectly

I know this is not a taught mechanic, but watching someone not spear out of a grab the second they hear the lizards jaws close makes my soul hurt.
Rain world feels like more if you yourself was experiencing it, feeling the pain, and torture. There.. of course are infinite lives, not like in our world but, think what would you do if you were actually irl there. You'll be scared and wouldn't wanna go, and the limited materials and food to survive, you must move forward. I really like this game.
