Hi Sam, just wanted to say I appreciate your videos. I also have anxiety and through planning “analog style” I have found it to be soothing. Once I let go of trying to plan like others (neat, perfect lines, impeccable handwriting), I started to develop my own style. For example I high level plan on my weekly view and on my opposite blank page I set five priorities each week. Underneath I put anything unique about that week as a mini memory. For me, if I keep it simple, I don’t stress as much. Wishing you planner peace, while enjoying the journey. -Deb
It sounds to me like you're suffering from depression more than anxiety. When we're depressed, it's almost impossible to find joy or satisfaction in anything. Although you're obsessing about your planners, it feels like there's more serious things going on with you. Until you address the root problem of what's causing you to feel so unhappy, you'll never have planner peace. No planner will ever be good enough. The comparison game is something I 've been sucked into in the past but now, although I still enjoy watching videos and seeing how others plan, I don't buy into it, and I'm all the better for that. Just have what makes you happy and don't worry about what everyone else is doing. This is in no way meant as a criticism. I wish you nothing but good, and I hope you do find a way to feel better soon.
I spent an absolute fortune on Hobonichi Weeks and accessories, convinced that it was going to be right for me. I was so excited about it. But I just had to admit to myself that the Weeks is not for me. I’m sad about it. I’m trying a Hobo A6 at the moment and that actually seems to be working really well for me. I feel like I spent my whole life trying to find the perfect handbag (I have WAY too many) and now I’m doing the same thing with planners 😅
This was the first year I finally said no more Weeks. I've had one every year since 2018 and it ends up in the planner graveyard. I've had some planner envy but it's finally passed and I'm so happy I resisted the urge this year.
I always appreciate your honesty in your planner struggles. I did to for years I found out quite early in my planner life that I hate hobo paper. I don’t like weekly because at the end of the week it looks to messy. I’m loving moleskin pocket daily. Fits my tiny life and if I mess up a day I just turn the page and start over. So the daily and monthly combo work like a dream for me.
With so many options out there, it is no wonder we planner hop! I think what matters is that you have something at all times to use for keeping track of whatever you need to keep track of! Even if you don't finish it, it was still useful while you were using it.
I get the journal aspect and I'm the same. I'm more of a documenter. I have 2 TN weeks inserts. One is my planner and lists and the other is more structured. Left page is weather and 3 things I'm happy about and the right side is a blurb about my day. It isn't personal problems or big issues. I'd have no problem with anyone thumbing through it. I use a 4 string TN and I'm still in it so I think I found my system.
Hi Sam! Thank you thank you thank you. You were very vulnerable in this video, and I wanted to tell you that you are helping all of us who are in the same boat! While you are getting away from the Weeks size, I am actually wanting to go to it, but was struggling because the Weeks does not have a page per day, and I need a weekly and a daily. From watching this video, I realized that the Aura Estelle daily classic weeks size planner is perfect for me! So now I am going to use that along with a normal Hobonichi Weeks and finally have planner peace. :) Thank you for you for sharing your struggles and in turn, helping us all not feel alone! :)
Still happy in my bullet journal. When I get bored, I do something different in it. It comes with me everywhere. It's not perfect, but then I'm kind of a "work in progress" myself 😃. I have been really liking that I can write down as much, or as little, as I want. I just keep moving through my Leuchtturm, page by page. I'm thinking that I may keep my bullet journals, which is something I never did with old planners. It's packed with memories. We are all different and we all need different systems and tools. I'm glad you and I have found ours 🥰
Love all of your videos Sam! and I agree for me as well it's been the biggest year of indecision for planners! I feel like I've seen a lot of diversity in the planner community this year which is amazing but also making me want to try everything haha. Thanks again for sharing!
I know! I felt like all through December and January my head was spinning from all of the options! Sometimes sorting through what isn’t working is most important!
I'm trying out the Wonderland 222 planner. I usually use a Hobonichi Weeks but I decided to try something different. It is vertical and I'm usually a horizontal planner.
I think about that a lot, what happens to my bullet journals and regular journals after I'm gone. I feel like a lot of my bujo stuff is driven by the idea that my kids might find it interesting one day, because it captures so much of our life, even down to how much we're paying for groceries or when this major life event happened. Sometimes I feel like those little details are just as important, maybe more important, than long form journaling.
I don’t want to intrude but can I give you something to think about. I’ve cleared out a few family estates including both my parents. Personal stuff is difficult to get rid of especially things you feel the person cared about. Yet I never want to clutter other peoples lives with my things. A simple solution is to always write in your planner/journal to the finder that these can be tossed or have a storage box for finished planner/journals that says “may be disposed of”. That makes it much easier on the person clearing mentally. They can rip out pages or photograph important pages but have no guilt in moving the item on. I kept my Dad’s planner/ journal but tossed a lot of other things that I knew he loved but I just didn’t have space for. It would have been much easier emotionally if I was given previous permission to toss if need be. Just something to consider.
@@pineconelife Good points! And honestly, if I keep this up, I'll have boxes and boxes of notebooks by the time I go, and do they really want all of that? Probably not. The pictures will be more significant, but we take so many in this smartphone age, can anybody really hold on to all of them? This feels like it could be an excellent fireside at 3am conversation.
I feel super lucky that I’m so comfortable in my fc compact setup, I’m using a super simple grid weekly which is basically 8 boxes per week and I just do almost a bullet journal system. I love it, it’s very functional, nice to look at and convenient.
@@samplans honestly it was a game changer for me! I think if you’re always switching between personal and A5 trying to find a happy medium and B6/personal wide is too square then FC compact is a great option - I was always switching between sizes but when I discovered FC compact it was the perfect fit!
Don't look at all as planner fails........you have found in this current season what you like. :) The struggle is so very real though Sam! Thanks for your videos.
❤ could this be a new mental health scale? I am absolutely fine with my boring personal rings BUT I did have to switch inserts in March for a similar reason to one of yours - the inserts were too light grey! When things got busy, I couldn’t distinguish between days, and suddenly my anxiety was ramping up more than usual. I caved and bought DIYFish monthly/weeklies with their nice thick lines, and I’m calmer again 😊
I wanted to share that I use the large size Commit 30 planner. This is my third year with it. I love it! I use it for planning, tracking, and adding a few comments about my day. I just bought a Traveler's Company passport sized notebook that will be my planner I carry with me. That hooked me, and I bought a regular sized Traveler's Company notebook that will serve as my journal. I'm so glad you are vlogging about the Commit 30. It's hard to find videos from people who use them.
I love your honest videos! I feel so less guilty having bought planners that didn’t work for me. After 30 plus years of using a paper planner, I keep going back to the moterm a7 luxe planner that I bought 3 years ago. I use a mixture of SewMuchCrafting and the remainder of the blush colored inserts from Minted Sugar. Please keep making your amazing videos!
Fro me my anxiety causes me to journal a lot as I’m worried that I’ll loose those memories . I lost my father at a very young age and since then I feel very possessive about these memories so I’ve been an ardent journaler . For my planner I use a standard size bujo with weeklies , and I have a composition notebook cut to standard size that I keep with it for brain dumping or as a rough book
For me, it’s the Common Planner (Sterling Ink). I got in on the pre-order, but just didn’t gel with it in Jan/Feb. So, I went back to my first love, a Standard size TN. And then *plot twist* couldn’t get into that and FINALLY picked the Common Planner back up and was like “Why didn’t this planner work this well a month and a half ago??” /SurprisedPikachuFace So I’m in the Common Planner now, and enjoying it, but I spent a bunch on standard TN stuff in the process of getting my head on straight.
Thank you for this video!!I am OCD,a perfectionist in certain things, and have PTSD.I am also a full time caregiver for my disabled hubby. My brain goes in a vertical planning system, but I am trying to make my Hobo Cousin be my full planner for all things hubby and home.I also do a little journaling in it as well.I find myself watching videos and getting it in my head that I need to try this planner I haven't heard of,so I get it and it sits.My goal this year is to stop that and use what I have.Lol.But it's also how I get with bags as well.I find I get overwhelmed with all the things.
I’ve been in several myself this year. I would go on and sell the Aura Estelle and a couple of the others at a discount. At least you’d recoup some of your money. I had never heard of that one. The Commit 30 could be carried in your bag, I guess depending on the bag.
I also do better for my planning in analog form. It makes it less stressful for me. Same with "daily planning." There's something to be said for setting up my week in as weekly goals that really keeps it more grounded for me. Journaling isn't for everyone. Even then, it's very much as personal journey. What works for someone else might night work at all for me, and that's okay. I def feel you on feeling buyers guilt. These days, I try not to let myself think about anything deeper than what's in the moment. I cut down composition notebooks for B6 sized notebooks that I then put in my leather covers and I love it. They money that I've saved doing things MY WAY has made me feel a little less guilty when I recognize that something I took a chance on didn't work for me. Much like art: you just won't know till you take the chance. We do what we can, when we can. Don't beat yourself up 😉 This is coming from someone that typically works high level in digital formats. Maybe that's why I equate digital planning to deadlines and all that go with them 🤔
Most traditional planners are Sunday start monthly, Monday start weekly (think Franklin covey, at a glance, etc). When I switched to a same day monthly and weekly start-it took me forever to figure out why I couldn’t keep things on the right day. Once i did, it was easier to keep things straight. I do feel your pain!
I wanted to share with you that I am the same way with my monthly starting on Sunday but my weekly starting on Monday. I solved this issue by having a monthly book and then a separate weekly book and i keep them together in a travelers notebook. I don't suggest you do it if you don't want to, but we are very similar in the thought process! You are not alone. 😊
Something about strings doesn’t seem to work for me…not saying I’ll never try it again, of course. 😅 That’s why I’ve loved rings so much through the years, and it’s almost a guarantee you’ll see them again. 🤓
I bought the Commit 30 to, but ended up in a Passion Planner, I like the layout and that it’s more neutral in color. I realized that while I do not have a lot to plan, I like to decorate, so I’m tracking books, podcasts and shows I watch, etc. I’m painting in the planner with fountain pen ink…because I have way too much of that and I need to use it. I figure I can use my pocket Moleskine daily if I need something portable, but my planners stay on my home desk as I work from home. I kept trying to plan like everyone else and I was never happy, so I’m going to really try to do what I want to do and see if it sticks 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻
OOh, I'm feeling your pain. I tried BUJOing last year and it was going pretty well, until December hit. Then it felt like a freefall and decided to go back to my rings. Now I need to decide on the size. I've just set up a Personal Wide, and that feels about about right. Goldilocks syndrome. Good luck with your new planner and size. Hope it works for you.
In my Commit 30 I use white out tape to cover the weekdays, then make the weeks a Monday start with weekday stickers ending with Saturday/Sunday last two columns. I also use date dots. It is a little bit of effort but now the monthly calendar works with the weekdays too! Creative work around :-) as my brain was struggling with a Monday start monthly calendar....just didn't make sense to me either.
I have anxiety to I take one day at a time and I love to write paper and pencil I will always be old school but I have been planner just hearing of the small but I will be looking for one for my purse but when you want more go to your big planner when you get home that's what I am doing
If you put the elastic just under the top right corner, diagonally across the front of the book and hook it just above the bottom left corner it will still hold the book closed plus you can now use it to hold your pen! I've spent 5 minutes doing the hand movements for this and still don't know if I've made sense 🤣, but it works (I used to do it when I used Moleskine). This is my second year of using the A5 Filofax Time Management Day on Two Pages planner, and there's plenty of room to do everything I want. It also comes with Project Pages and Tracker Pages. Now that I've finally given myself permission to leave blank spaces and/or scribble phone notes or doodles I'm much more settled. It's too big to take out, but I only need appointment dates and times if I'm not at home so I use my phone calendar for that and transfer it to paper when I'm back home.
Same planner conflict here. I’ve tried Planner Perfect, Janes Agenda, Hobonichi weeks, Moleskine weekly and daily and most recently have ordered the Wonderland 222 b6 again. I am currently in 3 (janes agenda personal, hobonichi weeks and Moleskine daily). I’m on the same boat trying to find planner peace. Love your honesty, to which I can relate. Ugh!
Planner peace used to be elusive for me because the grids were all either too small or way too small. 😂 In the past couple years, I’ve also found that the light print that’s now in wide use is too hard to read, especially at a glance. A planner isn’t functional if I can only read it sitting down under a bright lamp. I’ve kept any planner I’ve written in so that anytime I get the urge to try something else, I pull out the rejects and think, “Oh, yeah, now I remember why this didn’t work.”
I’m using the a6 hobonichi planner that I though was going to be perfect…. is not, but I’m forcing myself to use it because I can’t deal with the guilt of buying different planners to experiment, but definitely eyeing the angel shoppe b6 planner for 2024 😅
Maybe it is a Ohioan thing - born an raised in Columbus and I agree with you - Need a Sunday start in my Month and a Monday start for my week! 😆And instead of fails, think of it leading you to what you needed at this time in your life. Nothing wrong with trying a few things, I don't think. I did the same and turned around and destashed. Yes it was exhausting at times, but now I know what I like and what I don't!
It is such a struggle at times. I am feeling antsy in my planners/journals as well...and I am trying to not let it bother me. I am staying in my current ones....for now. I'm hoping a change of cover styles might help me get over my slump. I'm loving all these covers I see on Instagram, in videos and on FB...but I think they just are not for me. Time will tell 🤔. I am eagerly awaiting some new covers coming from Greece 🥰
Listen - next time you want to use your hobonichi weeks - PLEASE get you a pilot multiball pen and use it in there! Give it just a second and you can highlight over it and it's SUPER black. and it's the one I carry around with me to write in it on the go. I know I can highlight over no problem and it feels good to write with on the hobo paper. Definitely get the "fine" one. I wanna know if you try it! (Also, I know erin condren brand is socially problematic, but have you tried EC Softbound planner? You may like it. I've used an 8x10 one in 2021 and 2022. They have an a5 size as well.
I actually have one of those pens around here somewhere. Not sure if it was the A6 Hobo or Weeks I tried it in. I’ll try it again. 😉 I’ve never tried the EC soft bound! I’ll give it a look, thanks!
I love the honesty of this video Sam. I so badly wanted that special edition travelers company passport set, I live and breath passport size. But I was not in a financial position to purchase at the time, now they are long gone. Ah well, hopefully another special edition will catch my attention
Got the hobo English a6 for the first time and I hate the English version. That being said, I’m going to use it because it was $$ and it’s working as my health and fitness planner. Next year it will be back to the Japanese. I’m in awe of the number of planners you’ve tried!
I also like to spend money on planners and notebooks that I'm not going to use! Thanks for sharing your 2023 fails - makes me feel like I have company! I have bought FOUR A5 five-year Hobonichi techos over the past three years, all of which ended in failure 🙄 And that's just for starters! I'll make a video about my recent planner failures when I can work up the energy. You're certainly not alone! I beat myself up about it too, but I really think it's just an occupational hazard for us planner people.
I think you are right! And if I get an idea that I *might* like something, I can easily push myself over the edge as something I can film a video about. 😅
I've been following you on IG & tune into your channel to see the many options. I have a p to carry in my bag but it does NOT have enough lined pages for lists/notes. I have kept a log in the back cover of what I don't like so when this year ends, I know what to look for. Thanks for sharing the other pocket moleskines, are you selling any of the unused planners?
It really looks like the 30 commit is working great for you! I know you will love the HSLT cover! I want one also. I am still loving my Hobo Cousin, or else I would try the 30 commit. I am using the daily pages for my fitness stats, and my mood stats, and sometimes a little journaling. I really enjoy the A5 size, and that it is a bound book vs. discs, spiral, twin loops, etc. I am glad you are saving at least those two Moterm ring planners that you love. You never know when the bug to switch things up a little may hit, and you don't want to be mad you got rid of those nice planners! I can't wait to see your HSLT cover! I will be jealous. lol
I gave been having a terrible time with my planners all year. I am using a Hobo cousin for work and used to do a lot of sticker decorating in them, but have come to realize how much money I was spending on the stickers and fidn't want to spend yhat much yhis year. That created the problem of what yo do with all that blank space. I am not using my planner to it's full capacity. I want yo journal in my cousin but then if I forget and leave it open in my desk everyone xan see my journal entries. Not good! Still trying to figure it all out too!
Back when kits first became popular for the Erin Condren planners, I freaked out because everything cost so much money! I completely understand your struggle with the space and privacy. I hope you figure it out soon!
I completely understand what you mean about the aesthetics of the hobonichis! I felt the same when I tried the hobo weeks! Just mentally couldn’t get out of that headspace and my handwriting is not neat like yours so it was bad!
Oh, planner chaos is no fun, but better to make some hard decisions now before the Big Launches begin. And besides, life changes and it will be nice to be able to shop your stash if you change your mind later instead of puddling in regret. My planner hiccup was a half-letter catch-all which I thought was perfect (you know, printing 2 per page easily, etc). It wasn't. At least as a catch-all. For me.*Sigh*.
wifey- pls dont say your kids wouldn't want to read them, I would've loved going back and reviewing what my mama was going thru during specific years....even my grandmama, but maybe that isn't for everyone

Don't beat yourself up 😉
This is coming from someone that typically works high level in digital formats.
Thank you for your courage to share 🙏🏻 Your honesty is highly appreciated, please do always remember that ❤️
I bought the Commit 30 to, but ended up in a Passion Planner, I like the layout and that it’s more neutral in color. I kept trying to plan like everyone else and I was never happy, so I’m going to really try to do what I want to do and see if it sticks 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻
i don't know why you're calling them planner fails. they are planner experiences.
This video spoke to my soul! Thank you for saying all the things! You are not alone in these fails! I’m sticking around to see planner contentment. 😊
Thank you so much 🧡
In my Commit 30 I use white out tape to cover the weekdays, then make the weeks a Monday start with weekday stickers ending with Saturday/Sunday last two columns. I also use date dots. It is a little bit of effort but now the monthly calendar works with the weekdays too! Creative work around :-) as my brain was struggling with a Monday start monthly calendar....just didn't make sense to me either.
That’s very resourceful! 🤓
I have anxiety to I take one day at a time and I love to write paper and pencil I will always be old school but I have been planner just hearing of the small but I will be looking for one for my purse but when you want more go to your big planner when you get home that's what I am doing
I love the covers for the pocket 😍😍 I also go through this struggles as well because my anxiety and depression 😢
10:13 why don't you combine the monthly and weekly togrther with the sttings ss ib the TN?
I’m using the a6 hobonichi planner that I though was going to be perfect…. is not, but I’m forcing myself to use it because I can’t deal with the guilt of buying different planners to experiment, but definitely eyeing the angel shoppe b6 planner for 2024 😅
Right there with you! I make myself use it because the planner and cover were expensive
Planner excursions! And we are in a space of figuring ourselves out. Maybe it’s the layout… maybe it’s not.
Love that term!
Sam!! I love your natural writing size it's so beautiful. I'm so so glad you're feeling yourself and contentment in this planner! It suits you🧡🧡🧡
Love your videos. Anxiety sucks! I struggle as well. I would be interested in seeing your weeks covers that you are going to sell.
What’s the name of the shop in Greece?
@@DianeShugart Elysian_paper 🥰
@@swede_pea Thank you, I will look for them.
“Planner graveyard” 😂 thankfully I haven’t had a year like this since 2018, but yup, been there, done that!
I’m hoping to never repeat this again ever. 😅
I will be jealous. lol
Hi Sam, if you are interesting in selling your Travelers Company records pocket set. Let me know. I would like to buy it from you.
Fails of 2023... it's only March! 🤣😂🤣
It’s that kind of year.
I wonder if you have every thought about creating your planner/journal in the size and layout that you need
Not a bound book, but printable inserts are hopefully in my future.
I relate to so much of what you said
🥰
@@samplans you hit every bug a boo I have experienced
The color and texture of the snap journal is gorgeous. Is that Sedona?
It’s either Sedona or Rust. I love it!
What about a different pen with hobonichi weeks??
I’ve tried alllll of them. Really.
Feel You. The struggle can be real😢 Would You sell those You don't use? I'm willing to buy The Records passport and A6 Memoria cover 😊❤
I’ve never seen so much waste…ever!!!😳😳😳
Actually, I’m sure that isn’t true. But thanks for taking the time to say so!
wifey- pls dont say your kids wouldn't want to read them, I would've loved going back and reviewing what my mama was going thru during specific years....even my grandmama, but maybe that isn't for everyone
You should do giveaways...
i am willing to buy the tn records if you are willing to let go. i am also in ohio
I’m sorry, I sold it the day this video went up.
I adore your videos. It must be an Ohio thing…but I totally relate to your brain, #OHIOBRAINS:) Your indecisions make me feel normal. #pataskalohio
